Desktop Backgrounds

I noticed something about desktop backgrounds I never noticed before.  A friend of mine gave me a bunch of pictures from his trips.  When I start changing desktop backgrounds to see what background I want to use for the desktop at that moment, eventually, the background goes black.  I have to restart the WPS.

It depends on the size of the picture before this happens.  PNG's cause this to happen fast.  The WPS must be running out of resources.

I have 3 pictures at the Canadian site.  These are large pictures.

You might want to report that in the eCS bug tracker since PNG support is provided by a third-party plugin that Mensys might have source access to.

It will do it with JPG and BMP too, basically, any image that the OS/2 IOPROCS get their grubby hands on. I see this with the images taken from my 7.1 MP digital camera. Change backgrounds about 5-10 times and BAM, IOPROC shits out and I need to reboot. Really great stuff, really.

I don't have to reboot.  The desktop background just goes black.  I restart the desktop and everything is back to normal.

These images look really good on a large screen.   I know Christian has a large screen.  He may want to see how they look on his desktop.

Some graphic files can be so large that the desktop background goes black right away when selecting the image.  After that, no more backgrounds unless the WPS is restarted.

I will file a bug report as soon as bugtracker can be accessed again.  I have not been able to access it all day.

By the way, it appears that Hobbes Incoming is down too.

For me the IOPROC dies or something, because any .bmp or .jpg or .png lose their associations and if i try and open them, the program will crash and the WPS will reset. The only thing that cures this is a reboot for me.

Average image size from my camera is JPG @ 3.6MB, loaded from my NTFS volume.

To Saijin_Naib: Oh, you know I can't resist biting on: "And yet, it [XP] works
brilliantly for me in every situation".

But first, I'll largely agree with you: XP is almost adequate. I used it for a
couple of years, and had almost none of the troubles that ordinary people do,
because I took measures against, starting with getting rid of IE.

Hanging around a PC repair shop will provide you horror stories about Windows,
yet MOST of those aren't exactly due to flaws, but to insane defaults such as
IE having "Install on Demand" and Javascript on, because otherwise users might
miss out on "web features". Just those two items almost ensure that a system
will be infected / trashed if it gets onto the internet. And there's Messenger
running by default which opens a window for nuisance, at best. Much of what I
rail about is the mindset that believes those should be ON by default, when
trouble is certain to follow. I bet that YOU are behind a router, and use
Mozilla, besides know enough to operate Windows "safely".

I'd like an answer to this specific: Do you LIKE having to click on a balloon
tips box telling you that you have unused icons on your Desktop? Or have you
turned balloon tips off? -- Heh, heh. You see the implications, I'm sure.

Below is mere ranting...

Took Crimosoft only 8 years for XP to really rival OS/2 2.1GA on several
fundamental technical points, an HPFS-equivalent being the most glaring
example. Of course the almost unlimited money poured into development resulted
in numerous conveniences, but with Vista, even that didn't work.

Evidently you're NOT using Vista either, so agree with me that Crimosoft can
go too far. You're just behind me on the geezer cycle of "good enough", and I
bet will be another Vista resister. I predicted that effect to acquaintances
three years ago: pretty much happens to everyone.

My case is best made by comparison between OS/2 and what was released at the
same time from Crimosoft: compare OS/2 2.1GA to Windows 3.1. -- EASY choice.

As I've said, there's nothing intrinsically better about Windows, nothing that
couldn't be done under OS/2 as well or better, it's just that all recent
APPLICATIONS are written for Windows. Yet Crimosoft is actually a hindrance to
development: they want to control EVERYTHING. We can only be thankful that
they aren't competent enough to be as evil as they'd like.

Hmm. Could a moderator please move this to "ecs and bittorrent" thread?

It's POSSIBLE that I clicked on wrong thread, but I prefer to believe that it was computer error. (Imagine a smiley face here: I don't know how to use them, and respect old-fashioned text too much to end a sentence with the text version.)

Hey David, I was playing with the gOS Rocket (2.9) wallpaper and I combined it with my black-spikes wallpaper. I like the result. A sort of Aurora Borealis type thing :) Maybe you can find a use for it? I also included the rainbow spikes as I've been told the black/white spikes are too depressing. I find it soothing, but whatever  :P

Nice desktop, Saijin Naib, but it is a little small on my 1900x1200 desktop.

Are the versions that you have placed here, the largest available?

Later...

Wow... real 1900x1200? I've got 2560x1024 - but that's using two monitors. You can always use PMView to resize and "re-enhance" the image if Saijin doesnt have a larger version...

So... what type of monitor/projector/screen and video card are you using?

Greetings, RobertM

Yep, it's real 1900x1200 on my ViewSonic VX2835, 28" monitor.

My wife bought it for me last year. It was pretty cheap.$600.00 or there abouts.

My video card is an ATI Radeon X300 PCX. It's a good combination.  :D

I tried monitor spanning for a while, (with lesser monitors), but they were of different sizes and one was a CRT, so I gave that up.

I like this setup better; it works well for me.

The only problem is the brightness. It is totally insane and would fry the retinas, so I have to keep it set between 3 - 5.  :o

Still, 1900x1200 makes for some lovely backgrounds. ;D

WRT the resizing, at that high a resolution, the e x p a n d e d resolution looks less than spectacular so I stick with native matches only.

I agree - 1920x1200 is NICE - FWIW I use the same combination as Ben - ie ATI X300 and Viewsonic VX2835 28" screen - only issue is that DPMS doesn't seem to work when connected via DVI :/

Same here, but it's not a true DVI input. DVI works through an adapter that goes through the HDMI input.

So it would seem that HDMI = Half DPMS Matched Input.

Sorry it took me so long ben, here they are in 1900x1200. (Native for me is 1280x1024 hence the resolution ;) )

Greetings, Saijin Naib.

Not a problem on the time. And I "thank you" for taking the effort to do it.

Hmm...    *Ben quietly tests out the images for fit and finish*

Hey! They look great and fit my desktop to a "T".   :o

Thanks again.
