Similar SW as Skype? For eCS and Win.

Is there a similar software than skype which let you talk over IP between eCS an Win systems?

Basically I would need only a voice connection between two dedicated systems over the internet. One running Win, the other eCS. No need for dial in services to others. Of course, skype similar services would be convenient. But at first I have 2 dedicated systems and the eCS system even do have a static IP.

I don't think there is at the moment, BUT if you know anything about porting software there is openwengo www.openwengo.org which is good (I know a few windows usere that use it without problems).

One option, that I know about, is to get a router with the VOIP feature. That is totally OS neutral. You still need a service, to be able to use it, but they are available. I believe that one of them is VONAGE:

Check this out:

IBM no longer supports it but it is still available for download.  Not 100% certain it will do what you want but I as I recall it does.

Having been 8 years since I had looked at ic phone, I had forgotten it requires a server and I can't find an active one so far.

To bad.  I guess the server application would not run on eCS, and if yes, it would not be available for free, true?

Maybe you should look here or ask the author. There is an option for "voicechat" and its said to support Google talk.

I really don't know for sure... I haven't found the server software.  The servers were Advantis servers that they ran on, this may have been OS/2 or more likely something larger as the time that IC Phone was initially released was around 1996 which would not have been windows at that time.

I remember IC Phone, it was fairly advanced for its time.  Maybe we should ask IBM if they'd release the source for that (and the server software) to the open source world...?  But then again, it is an old  enough product that never really went anywhere within IBM, who knows if the source even still exists...

That is an interesting thought.  It and Bamba which was a streaming multimedia player from the same era were quite good and that over a dialup connection.  Imagine if these technologies were put to use now in mostly highspeed connections.  Come to think of it... Bamba may well have OS/2 server side parts.  Bamba was used in the '96 Olympics where IBM ran everything off of OS/2 (just no OS/2 client at the time, that came later  >:( ).

Would a hardware phone be an option for you?  I've used them (getting one soon for my own use at home) and they are, IMNSHO, much better than the software and I get better quality out of the hardware-based phones.

Hardware phone which works with skype? I've nerver seen such a thing.

I've an old POTS but do not want that she have to pay the high prices for calls from Russia (where my doughter studies for the next months) to Austria where I live. She has internet, a WinXP notebook and skype installed. But I don't want to boot Win only to talk to her. I can chat (PSI) and of course email from eCS. But would be nice if I can talk too.

Google is your friend.

A search for "skype hardware phone" (without the quotes) turned this up:

Results 1 - 10 of about 379,000 for skype hardware phone. (0.56 seconds)

So there's a few out there, methinks. :)

Here is the link to the phone I am getting myself:
http://accessories.skype.com/store/skype/DisplayProductDetailsPage/productID.106215900

$99 isn't too bad of a price (well, for me).  I know I can get them for as little as $25 locally if I look around and of course, it all depends on what kind of features, et al. you want.

I'm not sure where in the world you're at, but if you look in the Skype Store, they'll probably have something there for you.  You can probably find it cheaper if you look around, of course, but this is a starting point.

I hope this helps some.

You can even go to Walmart or something of the like and find a bunch back in the computer section. I've been tempted to buy one before but without any need, I just use the VOIP phones we use for our hose phones.

That's one of the places that I found those cheap Skype phones.  Here's a URL to the quick search I did on their website:

That's for the US Walmart site; the cheapest they have right now looks to be $32.88 (the one I could use; they have one for the Sony PSP which is cheaper).
