ASUS Eee pc 901 and eComStation
« on: 2008.08.22, 17:03:17 »
Recently I bought an ASUS Eee pc 901 which has almost the same hardware as the MSI Wind netbook or the rebranded Medion Akoya. The main difference is the LAN chipset and it is equipped with a 4GB  SSD and an second 8 GB SSD instead of the 80 GB HDD.

Following the path already gone by Robin  and Sigurd I managed to get an 1,5 GB partition on the second drive by shrinking the NTFS partition to 4 GB leaving 4 GB for eCS and the ECS_CDRUN. Note that both partitions must be logical and not primary. If you do that Windows will make one partition visible and the others hidden. I also shrank the first SSD to enable the bootmanager.

I had no problems with USB. The only problem was that the ECS_CDRUN partition isn't found. I managed with Dfsee to have the partitions fixed for LVM and eventually give it a fixed driveletter. After that I had no problems with finishing the eCS installation. I started with default settings and only changed the display driver to panorama and made sure that the USBcdrom was enabled. The Realtek HDA audio chipset isn't recognized but I installed uniaudio nevertheless. Exchanging afterwards the uniaud32.sys using the HDA driver from Paul Smedley.

Concerning audio I had the same problem as Shai and Sigurd as that multimedia isn't installed if loaded from a FAT partition. I finally changed that to HPFS to install it afterwards.

WLAN is now working thanks to Shai. I tried the RT2860 driver from him as well as the supplied driver from the installed windows. Both have the same problem that only profiles are working. Scanning isn't possible.

So what is working.
ACPI with /SMP /APIC /CD is working well and I have now 2 processors and battery showing in the taskbar.
Widescreen is also working very well with the Intel widescreen activator from Robert Lalla.
USB is working fine.
There is a new BIOS firmware available and strongly advise to flash that.

The audio and wlan drivers are a bit buggy giving me hangs sometime. So I hope that will improve in the future.

So the only thing left is LAN. Genmac isn't supporting the Atheros AR8121/AR8113 chipset.
Next week I will try to figure that one out.

Have fun,
Onno Tabak

Dell plays defense with Mini 9 Netbook

A year after the Asus Eee PC began aggressively marking territory in the low-cost notebook business, the second-biggest PC maker in the world is finally ready with an answer.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 will be formally announced Thursday, as CNET News reported Tuesday. It's Dell's first foray into the Netbook category--undersize notebooks powered by Intel's Atom processor.

'It would be interesting to see if eCS runs on it".  8) It is now official.  ;D It looks really nice.

There seems to be a lot of this type of laptop being introduced lately.  8)

All of the above (plus the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 and KITT::) ::) ::)

BTW, can "KITT" get anyone away fast enough (if necessary) from Hurricane (Tropical Storm) HANNA or IKE 8)

Hanna closes in on Carolina coast

A tropical storm watch is in effect from north of Sandy Hook, New Jersey, to Watch Hill, Rhode Island, including Long Island, the hurricane center said.

Meanwhile, Ike's top winds of 115 mph keep it a Category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, according to the hurricane center's 8 p.m. advisory.......

According to the older television show, KITT could. I have no doubt the newer KITT can; it is a 2008 or 2009 Ford Mustang. :) I hope it can out run Ike and those (storms) that follow it.  8)

I live in hurricane alley.

Josephine is now starting.

I predict that the next one will be called Kyle...

... and then Laura.

... and you can have them...

I have a 32 gigabyte mini-pci-e card for my Asus EEE PC 701a. I installed it. I will try to install eCS 1.2r onto it using an external USB cd-rom drive. :) The mini-pci-e just came in.  8)

'packed data crc failur'
I tried it and got a 'packed data CRC failed...' while it was trying to boot from the disk to install eCS 1.2r.  :(  Is this a problem with the eCS 1.2r disc or is it the EEE PC that I am trying to install eCS onto? Should I wait for version 2.0 to come out to the non-soft sub'ers?

How long before version 2.0 comes out?  ??? Inquring minds want to know.  8)

I doubt Version 2.0 will have USB booting support as I've yet to see any of that in the bugtracker.

I used DFSee to set up the SSD as startable. It took a little bit of time to get it to boot but it did. :) My lunch hour was up so I will try installing eCS 1.2r again.  8)

I tried it again and it came up with the same error of 'packed data CRC failed...'. I had tried DFSee again. :(

I was able to install FreeDOS onto it. http://www.freedos.org I will try eCS again tomorrow.  8)
