RC5 3 problems

Well, I gave up on the 1.2r. I was actually able to install and get to the WPS!!

OK, I have 2.0 RC5 installed, have 3 problems. os2\boot\pscom.sys wont load and gives a sys1201

Mouse and keyboard works fine till I get to the desktop, then I have absolutely no input from either. I tried USB wireless and USB wired mouse and KB.

I have XP installed on C: and eCS installed on D: Boot manager shows both drives as C: and boots eCS with an error of course. The only way to boot eCS is to start installation CD, delete BM and set D: Startable.
Just waiting for eCS to have all the features................

When you do the eCS CD Boot thing, does the eCS install boot as Drive D? If so, try to change the drive letter to D using LVM. Boot to CMDLINE and run LVM and reassign. Then you can try to set back up the BootManager options.

As for the USB input devices, it sounds like incorrect USB support being loaded and taking over from the BIOS's USB to legacy support. Ensure the proper USB drivers are un-REMd in the config.sys - you need the chipset, keyboard and mouse drivers un-REMd. If they are, it might be the incorrect chipset drivers being loaded (post mobo info and maybe someone will know which chipset drivers are appropriate).

Every thing is installed on D: all config system lines point to D:\. Manage vloumes shows XP as C: and eCS as D:
I will give the LVM a try.

I found some info about the mouse and KB problem. Just need to know what file to unpack, to install the mouse, mouse.sys? http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/view.php?id=2160

It looks like the pscom should not even be installed since I have no serial ports. http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/view.php?id=2243

You have been a great help, and that is coming from one NY Robert to another NY Robert  ;D

This is an install issue.  If no serial ports are found, this driver should not be installed.  A bug report has been on file for this.  Just put an REM in front of the line listing this device driver in your config.sys :)

Mouse and keyboard works fine till I get to the desktop, then I have absolutely no input from either. I tried USB wireless and USB wired mouse and KB.

Make sure you have the following lines in your config.sys file.

BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS

DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBMOUSE.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBKBD.SYS

If you do, it could possible be an ACPI problem.

The Bootmanager should be marked as startable.

The windows partition and the eCS partition should be marked as bootable.  Check with LVM. Use LVM to correct is this is the case. ;)

What I meant is I have to set D: as startable to over come the error, when BM is set as startable and c: and D: are set as bootable, boot manager displays both drives as C: at boot time.

I do have all those lines.

I am installing this on a Dell Dimension 3100/E310 should I just give up on this platform. Is is possible to get eCS to run on this pc that was made for XP? http://en.ecomstation.ru/hardware.php?action=item&id=1473 OS/2 never used to be such a problem before PCs were designed around windoze. If I were to get a pci to ps2 adapter, would that allow ps2 mouse and KB support? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815124061

Its not that the PC is designed for Windows its that eCS has difficulty with some newer hardware, usually as a result of it's new support for ACPI which is still very much under development. I'd suggest you get your hands on the latest ACPI builds and see if those solve anything.

ivan

Do you also have BASEDEV=USBD.SYS and BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS in your config.sys?

Up to the time the desktop loads, your usb keyboard and mouse are using th bios calls to work, beyond that they require the usb*.sys drivers.

I don't know how many or what type of USB Host Controllers  you have but you must have one of the ehci/uhci/ohci lines in config.sys for each controller.  Since you have XP installed and I assume usable use that to find the number and type of controllers.  One problem you may be having with the mouse and keyboard is that they are plugged into a controller with no driver and so will not work.

I have never had any problem in getting OS/2 to use usb mice and keyboards, in fact it is generally easier than window

Any recommended ones and where can I down load them.

Ivan

I do have both of those lines as well, I am thinking ACPI problems?

You have software subscription support right? Log into the Mensys page and go to the Betazone option. I forgot what ACPI/APM version is used in RC5 but I know that Eugene and company have released updated .wpi installs of ACPI. There are also testcase builds available in the Mensys FTP to download but I think you must install those manually. You will need to read through the ACPI documentation to try and learn what switches you need to get things going.

I tried to install 2.0 RC5 on 2 systems. I am unable to get USB mouse and Keyboard on either. I am using a Logitech Cordless DesktopĀ® LX 710 Laser. One system is a Dell Demension Dimension 3100/E310 Service Tag 72ZQL91. The other is a Dell Inspiron 3800 Service tag 7H8VD01. I am able to use the old PS2 ports, for mouse and KB on the Inspiron. Now I have the same problem on 2 PC's. I must be doing something wrong? I plugged a usb memory stick, and eCS brought up a dialog indicating a new drive, and the light stayed on, so USB is working. And all these ACPI files, which one, and how do you install it?

Folks,

Regarding rdonnelly's post below:

Mouse and keyboard works fine till I get to the desktop, then I have absolutely no input from either. I tried USB wireless and USB wired mouse and KB...

Per rdonnelly elsewhere (http://www.os2world.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,63/topic,1307.0/), he resolved the USB keyboard/mouse issue using Ivan's suggestions in the other thread (modified slightly):

1) Boot from the eCS CD and go to the command line.

2)Start tedit and edit the config.sys

3)Check the USB section and see if the USBEHCD is after all of the USBUHCD drivers (on all my (Ivan's) computers the EHCD is after the others).

4) Reboot without the CD and see what happens.

Additionally, if that does not help, Ivan suggests REM'ing out the ACPI driver and anything associated with it.

Hope that helps anyone else running into this problem - and of course, thanks to Ivan for the solution!

Robert

(just tidying up the thread so people can find the answer easier)

Yes, thanks to Ivan and the rest of you, I have 1.2R and RC5 running nicely. The USB arraingment should become a sticky, and the OS/2 developers should do something about this in the install, a couple of statements in config.sys like:

REM### USBEHCD must be below any USBUHCD drivers in config.sys.............

I will let them know about this in the feedback.

I must say, RC5 was done very nicely too, very modern compared to 1.2.
