I downloaded eCS RC6a into a zip file, copied the zip file to a CD-Rom, copied the zip file from the CD-ROM to my C drive on another system and unzipped the file. That seems too simple. Did I do it right? If not, how am I supposed to install it?
Thanks in advance for your help.

To install eCS:

1. Unzip the downloaded rc6a
2. Burn the *.iso file to a CD  (in the way described in the pdf-document where you downloaded rc6a)
3. Install via that CD the usual way.

Thanks.
The *.iso file when on a CD is a bootable file?

OK, I burned the *.iso file to a CD, put the cd in the drive, told the laptop to boot from cd. There was no install program, etc. It just went thru what appeared to be the normal boot sequence. Is that right???

melf

No that doesn't seem right, you shall of course come to the eCS install program to make you choices and configurations et cetera.  Did you burn the CD in the way described in the pdf-document where you downloaded rc6a, "howtoburncds.pdf"? That is, you can't just burn the .iso as it is a usual file. Read the document thorughly and you'll succeed.

Dennis.

If you are using OS/2 to burn the CD and you have cdrecord2 (the enhanced version by nikk) then , from a command prompt type the following:

<path>cdrecord2.exe dev=0,1,0 speed=10 -v -n -driveropts=burnproof -eject <path><iso file>

You have to supply the paths to where cdrecord2 and the iso file are also your burner may be different to 0,1,0 (first device on secondary channel).  If you have the early cdrecord then you need to leave off -n or you will get an error.

If you're using windows then look for something like burn iso file in nero, deepburner and poweriso both let you do that from the start.

Kim: I got RC6a from the Mensys site, but now am unable to find the pdf doc. Can you send me a link to the proper file, please? I seem to remember several readme files and not knowing which one to download.

I burned the cd on a windoze xp system

melf

I'm not Kim but anyway...if you're using XP to burn try eg this http://www.download.com/Active-ISO-Burner/3000-2646_4-10602452.html?tag=mncol  program - seems very straight forward!

Good luck

Oops! Sorry on the mixup. Thanks for the link.
Tried to burn the cd with Poweriso on my xp system. Put the cd in the drive on the ecs laptop, went to an ecs window, changed directory to cd drive, typed 'setup'. Here's what I got:
    REM ifconfig 0 nil
REM ifconfig lan1 metric 1 ntfu 1500 (this statement is repeated thru metric 7)
    dhcpstrt -i lan0 -d 30
    REM ifconfig sl0
    ipgate off

Couldn't boot from cd, never went into an install program. I don't get it.

Dennis,now I have 2 questions to you.

First, am I misunderstanding you? Is your aim in fact to upgrade an eCS installation you already have?

Second, I don't know about Power iso, but when I read information of it I can see that it is a free trial, limited to burn an *.iso of 300MB. The eCS *.iso onother hand is about 600MB, so I guess that wont work, unless you owe a licence?  The program in my link had no such limitations as I could see - it was free software.

Dennis

I'm trying to upgrade from eCS 1.2
Poweriso didn't seem to work--I have a license
Used your link to burn another cd.

Now what do I do?

DavidG

First, use a file manager or MY Computer under Windows to see if the iso was burned correctly to the CD.  You should see files and directories on the CD, not an ISO file.  If you are still showing th iso file on the CD, you did not burn the ISO file to the CD correctly.

If you are seeing files and directories on the CD, then this is good.  This means the CD was burned correctly.

Now if you eCS machine does not boot from the burned CD, it may be because your machines bios are not setup correctly to boot from a CD first.

You need to tell us what you see on the CD you burned.

There are now files and directories on the cd.

Just booted the system from cd. It appears to be working...

DavidG

There are several FREE Windows disk burning programs that are easily downloaded.  One can be downloaded from

http://www.majorgeeks.com/BurnAware_Free_d5839.html

or another

http://www.majorgeeks.com/CDBurnerXP_d4242.html

The first one listed may be the easiest to use.

Well, not so great. It wants me to type in registration information. I typed in the user name and Regkey that was sent to me via email when I first purchased eCS in 2007. Checked and rechecked to make sure the typing was accurate. It doesn't like what I typed even tho it is accurate.
