erratic mouse, SciTech Pro SNAP

Almost reluctant to post this, since my last couple of posts seemed stupid in hindsight.

Here goes...

Finally upgraded my video card to an 256 mb Nvidia and boosted my resolution to 1024 X 768 on a flat panel display.  Scitech Snap Pro recognizes the card and monitor correctly.

Now my PS/2 mouse (I've tried two different mice) is erratic.  Most often I'll find it over in the bottom left corner.

I've not changed the mouse timing, or enabled comet corsor or dynamic focus change.  Everything is as it was.

There's a similar discussion in the old forum and mention is made of the free smouse driver (which I have had installed)

This is not a show stopping problem, but it is an irritant.  Has anyone else encountered this and quietly solved it?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi!
I think better choice would be amouse driver with usb mouse.

btw. what kind of "flat beast" got you? Such resolution (1024*768) is native for non-wide 15'' or 17''. Any bigger flat (lcd) screen has higher native rresolution so it must be rescaled (picture is crappy). If your panel is bigger set it to native, your graphics card has enough power to handle it correctly.

Hi Dave,

supposing that the only change to your system is the new graphics card... I can only imagine some kind of IRQ problem. PS/2 usually makes use of irq12. I can't tell from here but most likely this irq is now taken up by the graphics card (?). Chances are likely that a detected hardware change causes PnP to reassign IRQs in the system (assigning a different/new one to the changed device).

What I would suggest as a quick try is to check if your BIOS has a setting like "assign irq to VGA" and set this to "no" (meaning: don't use any irq for the graphics adapter). If there is such option, any contemporary graphics card will run just fine without irq (your model certainly will).
To do an initial check, try to see if your machines POST procedure (power-on self test) displays a list of IRQs assigned to devices, shortly before the OS loads... and watch if something now is assigned IRQ12.

Also, perhaps there is a BIOS option to reserve IRQ12 - like "legacy" option for the IRQ instead of "PnP". In this case, tell irq12 to be "legacy", so it'll not be used by PnP IRQ auto-assignment.

Anyway, YMMV... hope this helps. ;)

Cheers,
Thomas

Another possibility is how hardware mouse handling is being done in the new video card/driver combination.

They seem (SNAP) to have had various Mouse Cursor issues with both hardware and software mouse. Are you running the most recent version of SNAP?

Hi and thanks

Rob - as far as I know I have the current version.  I downloaded it when notice came out that future development had stopped.

Thomas - my bios did have the 'assign irq to vga' and I turned it off.  After many hours the mouse is still nervous and jittery.
RMVIEW shows IRQ Level = 12  PCI Pin = NONE  Flg = SHARED       AUX_0 PS/2 Auxiliary Device Controller - and 3, 5, 7, 9,13 are unclaimed and none show on the list as being shared.

OSW - my flat panel is only 15 - would love a bigger one, but not right now.  Taking your advice and installed amouse  (amouse280.exe) and time will tell if that is the fix.
I'd try USB, but I don't have a Software Subscription and I'm waiting for the next GA of eCS -

Thanks all,
Dave

I have similar problem for years, mouse in some I think random intervals move and even send clicks by of yourself, sometimes even happend to execute some unwanted operations or start applications.  But also, I have problem with keyboard; offten act like SHIFT is pressed until I press and release key, then work normaly for a while. It also can lead to unwanted acts, like when press shift in FFox, link is open in separate window. This isn't such problem for me, but now my little kids use computer and not yet can avoid, realise that.
I've tried different keyboards and mouses, and different mouse drivers. AFAIK latest version of SNAP. Nothing helped.  Not tested USB devices, it may be good idea.

I was using an NVidia GeForce 6600 video card with Amouse and a PS/2 mouse. My mouse worked perfectly with that combination. I don't think it's hardware at all.

Does your mouse work OK in a full screen WinOS2 session? There was a bug in the IBM mouse driver, and maybe it can't easily be removed from your system.

Cyber,

Perhaps your Shift problem has to do with the keyboard features of OS/2 for disabled users (I'm disabled, though I don't use them.)  One, I believe, makes the Ctrl, Alt, and Shift keys sticky..  I  believe hitting Shift three times unsticks them (I do that when Alt seems to be held down on my keyboard.)

I hope this helps.

Hi!
Well, you don't need to have Software Subscripition to try older version of usb -stack (for usb 1.1) they were freeely available round there on net...
Usb mouse was the wery first usb device I've start use back in 90' on warp3 then... and it was working like a charm in contrary to crappy win95 where it was imposible to use usb at all... so it was for a while I had connected two mices... usb logitech mouseman for warp and old logitech on com (that mobo had not a ps/2 port, but it had usb ...) just for win95... what is more funny both were working simultanously under warp at the same time.... a kind of fashionable now "multitouch" or multipointer ;)
Back to topic... are you sure your mouse is ok? It is working on other machines? If so there might really be some resources conflicts....

cheers

I think not; SHIFT become active without anyone pressed it and stays pressed. It is not only SHIFT, also sometimes in File Commander, for example, when I press SHIFT F6 to change file name, and use pressed SHIFT  and cursor key to select some part of file name, offten got 4 or 6 caracters pressed during that, so selected delete and be replaced with this numbrs.  It may be that this is because multimedia keyboard, with extra keys and without numpad at all. I've tried two such A4 and both funtion identicaly.

Hi Dave,

this is indeed becoming strange. ;)
- You had none such erratic behavior with the "old" graphics card?
- Is either your mouse or keyboard actually a USB device but using an adapter usb>ps/2 ?
- Is any one of both a "wireless" thinggy whose batteries are running empty?
- What is the behavior of the mouse if no keyboard is attached (or vice versa) ?
- Just to dig deeper: Is that a [PCI | AGP  (1/2/4/8 x) | PCIExpress] model ?
- Is there any kind of "overclocking" turned on in your machines BIOS?
- In your machines BIOS: Did you adjust any kind of VGA "speed" to -say- 2x / 4x?

Cheers,
Thomas

As Thomas says, there is something very strange going on.

When you replaced the card did you move anything else?

It is also time to give us the specifications of your unit -
* motherboard - make -type.
* any other add in cards?
* the output of pci.exe - tells us all about any possible conflicts.

Okay, let me try and catch up with all the input

First - the good news is that 'amouse' works better than 'smouse'.  I slowed down mouse tracking speed - that was frustrating - and restored speed to default. Either way  I haven't "seen' the problem recur.  So let's close this down and I'll stay with 'amouse.sys..

Cyber:  Fortunately I've not had those keyboard problems.  Mouse is/was bad enough.

Blonde Guy:  Haven't tried graphics instensive Win-OS/2 sessions recently.   I've a db application (Alpha4) but its' screen activity seemed to work okay.

osw:  Glad to learn about the USB support.  I do run USB card readers for uploading photos.  My USB s/w only supports 1st USB appearance, so not tried USB mouse.

warpcafe: I kept the old card at a lower resolution.  It froze up infrequently at higher resolutions.  Neither device is USB.  No wireless either.  Didn't know I could detach keyboard and still run, so haven't tried that.  Yes - PCI AGP 8x, but not PCI express.  No overclocking and don't know how to boost VGA speed, even in BIOS.

ivan: I didn't move anything else, and didn't add any cards.  The mobo is a SY-P4VTE VIA PT800 AGP/PCI/CNR.

As I mentioned at the top, the 'amouse'sys' driver seems to have cured my ills.  Thanks for all the support from great OS/2 users.
