Help with XP connecting to ECS 1.2R Share

Hi,

I am having a problem connecting my Win XP PC to a shared printer that is on my ECS 1.2R PC. My ECS PC can see and communicate with the shares on the XP System. When I run Net Use on the XP system I get an OK for the ECS shared printer:

OK LPT2 \\system01\laserjet

When I open "View Network Computers" System01 (the ECS PC) does not show up.

I have Norton Internet Security 2009 installed on the XP PC and when I open Internet settings and Trust controls it shows System01 as a shared devise on my network "IBMPEERS".

Since XP Net Use shows the connection to the printer OK. I tried to do a command line access to the printer:

Type (Path\File Name.txt) > LPT2.

I got this error: Network access is denied.

I am logged in using the same name an password on both PC's.

I know that XP is a Microsoft product so it defies all logic but can anybody help me get this connection working.

I have NetBios, and NetBios over TCP/IP installed on both machines and at one time with ECS 1.0 the connection worked. I now have SP3 plus updates on the XP PC.

Also, I can ping the ECS PC from the XP PC

Thanks.

Jim

Hi Jim

Could the problem be the result of "I am logged in using the same name an password on both PC's." ie 2 users on the network with the same login:password

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete,

I'm not sure. Everything I've read so far is that you must be logged on to each machine the same way. I don't know if this is necessary. Since my last post I worked with a Norton Tech and he proved that it wasn't Norton Security causing the problem.

What is confusing to me I can search for a computer on the network and XP finds the computer (SYSTEM01) and when I click on it, it shows the share.

When I use "View Workgroup Computers" all I get is the XP machine (SYSTEM03).

ECS Sees the XP machine and can connect to its shares, so the network is working.

I tried to install a networked printer on XP. When I entered the printers location (\\SYSTEM01\LASERJET) --all I had to do was type in the "\\S" and SYSTEM01 was provided by XP and when I typed in"\L" LASERJET was supplied by XP, indicating that XP somehow saw the share. When I clicked on next I got ther error message that either I typed in the wrong name (which is impossible since XP provided this) or that the specified printer lost its connection.

This my indicate that somehow the connection is not there but then how comes Search finds the computer and shows the share.

There's something in this XP networking that isn't being satisfied.

yes they have to match. they must also be in caps on the xp machine. printing works fine here though it was tricky to setup. however you seem to know the score. did you turn on lmannounce? is your "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level" set to "send lm & ntlm responses?

Thanks for replying. I had to change my user name in XP to Caps. That didn't help. Imannounce is on. My XP machine is home edition so I don't have "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level". How do I get to it if at all. This seems to be an XP Pro feature.

I just created a shared folder on the ECS system and when I open "My Network Places" on the XP PC I see the shared folder and can use it's contents. However, when I click on "View workgroup computers" only the XP system shows up.

I have a router (Syslink with 4 ethernet ports). I haven't fussed with RFCBCST.LST or RFCNAMES.LST file except to try to find them in the ECS partition. I couldn't find RFCBCST.LST but I did find RFCNAMES.LST and it has nothing in it. Is this part of the problem?

Also, I checked Lnannounce in the XP registry and it is set to on (1).

In x:\IBMLAN\IBMLAN.INI (x: is your boot drive, and it is a text file), find the line:
srvhidden = yes
and change it to:
srvhidden = no
Restart the network (or reboot).

That should allow XP to "see" the eCS shares.

Thanks Doug,

This helped. Now when I click on "View workgroup computers" my ECS PC shows up and I can click on its icon and I can see the shares. However I still can't print to the printer. I tried to "Add a printer" and when I asked the app to "Browse for a printer" all it showed For the IBMPEERS network was the printers on the XP PC.

As I mentioned previously, I have Netbios and Netbios over TCP/IP installed as protocols on both PC's. Could this be a problem? I'm confused since I can access the shared folder on the ECS PC. The ECS  printer share is listed as "started" and I have the access set to "basic" and "access".

It  has been a while, since I tried to get XP to print on an eCS printer, but I do remember that it was a problem. The XP system was installed with just an administrator account (like most of them, I would think). I never did get that account to access anything on the eCS machine (it could "see" the shares, but opening anything resulted in an empty window), BUT, when I added another administrator account, to XP, the new account just worked. I could access all of the eCS shares, and I got the printer to work too. As I recall, all I did was select the shared printer, and XP decided that it needed a driver, and installed it. I never did figure out how to get the first account to work. The only difference, that I could see, was that the second account always asked for a logon ID, and password, while the first one never did. I have no idea why.

When I tried to get VISTA to work, it was pretty well hopeless, although I haven't tried NETBIOS, yet. I have been working at getting SAMBA to go, but that is proving to be a bit of a challenge too. With NETBIOS over TCP/IP, I *think* the printer *might* work, IF I let it use the guest logon, which I don't like to do.

Having both NETBIOS, and NETBIOS over TCP/IP installed, usually doesn't cause any problems, but I think the machines could, possibly, get confused about which protocol to use, and things could get a little messy, if it decided to switch in mid stream. Windows likes NETBIOS over TCP/IP (although VISTA seems to have forgotten how to use that), so that is what I use (I also have a problem with my Asus WL-330g wireless adapter, since it doesn't like NETBIOS).

dougb makes a great point. our users accounts are members of administrator as well as "debugger". i don't know how it got set to debugger! the workstations also use the os/2 system's domain name in the "workgroup" name box.

do hard drive shares on "ibmpeers" work, if you have any??

I've the both too and it works with XP. That shouldn't be the problem as long as the have a different number -
0... TCP/IP
0... Netbios over TCP/IP
1... Netbios
or similar is what I have.

I have installed plain Netbios on my XP Thinkpads too. Remember, XP do _not_ install netbios correctly when you do not copy the files by yourself (mentioned here in another thread). XP do not even show an error message and shows Netbios as installed protocol, but it isn't.

Another thing is the user id and password. Not sure if the have to be upper case, I use lower case when logging on at XP. But there maybe a registry key to automaticall made them upercase when logging on at Warp Server or the IBM logon client (on one machine but not really necessary) or the server does it automatically, I don't know. But, don't use special and no more than 12 (?) characters. I seem to remember, that '-' works but '_' do not work in my user id.

Hi Doug,

My Logon Name and Password are the same on both XP and ECS PC's. So far I can read and write to shared files on either machine. I can print to the shared printer on the XP machine but not to the shared printer on the ECS machine even though when I do a net use from an XP command line I get an 'OK' for the ECS shared printer that is assigned to LPT2 on the XP machine.

Yes, I can read and write to shared files on both machines. That's what is driving me crazy.

Hi Andi,

I have the ECS system set up as above. There is something that XP doesn't like about my workstation setup that it doesn't see the IBMPEERS connection in the create a new printer wizard but it sees it in other ways such as when I use the "Net Use" command.

I think thats  one of the ways win is telling you 'I don't like other domain controllers or peer partners as the redmond ones' ;-)

Typing in or copy/paste the \\server\printer worked for me AFAIR.
