OS/2 Warp 4 instalation crashes

I am an absolute beginner with OS/2.

I am trying to install Warp 4 to an 80 gig hard drive. I have replaced the IBM1S506.add driver with DaniS506.add. I got as far as FDisk, deleted the existing partition, and sisnce no other option was available, restarted. Now after the boot screen appears, I get an "internal processing error" message, with a bunch of numbers on the screen (I can post them if it will help) that look like CPU register contents. It says to write them down and contact my service representative.

Am I doing something wrong? Did I forget some other upgrade?

More information needed:  processor, memory, etc. and the trap screen.

I assume you are booting from disketts and not a bootable CD.  If that is the case there may be a bad diskette causing the problem but it is very hard to advise without all the information.  It would also be helpful if you said what boot screen.

Hi, don't know what method you used, but just in case it was a different one.

To replace the IBM driver, rename the Dani driver to the same name, modify the config.sys file on the floppy to include:

SETCOPYFROMFLOPPY=1

Then try installing.

Hi,

just to make sure all details are collected for analysis:
When you say "I replaced ibm1s506.add with danis506.add"... what did you exactly do?
- deleted ibm1s506.add, copied dani and renamed it to ibm1s506
- or copied danis506.add to the boot media and edited config.sys accordingly?

From what I suspect, still the ibm1s506.add might be active and used, resulting in os/2 not being able to "understand" the (now) unpartitioned harddisk. Perhaps when editing config.sys you can also add a "/v" to teh end of the line that loads danis506.add to make sure it is displayed on screen when being loaded.

Also, any idea what version of Dani's drivers you are using?
I'm not sure whether there is a dependancy on a certain kernel version when using them... anybody else here can chip in some additional info?
And yes: Make sure to follow Roberts previous comment regarding the "copyfromfloppy" statement. Otherwise when booting from HDD after the initial install, the driver used on floppy will not be available on the disk and boot will fail (nasty thing, yet very well-known...)

Cheers,
Thomas

First, a minor correction (missing blank)

SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1

Next, make copies of your installation diskettes, get new HD drivers and edit CONFIG.SYS on your installation diskettes. You will need not only danis506r185.zip but also daniatatapi040.zip and danidasd144.zip from hobbes.nmsu.edu . You need to replace (or add):

- add the SET statement above to your config.sys
- replace ibm1s506.add by danis506.add - the simplest way is copying danis506.add over the original driver and keeping the original driver name. You need not edit the corresponding line in the config.sys.
- replace os2dasd.dmd by the driver from the zip file
- replace ibmatapi.flt by daniatapi.flt from the zip file. Again, copy over the original driver and keep the driver
name.

Replacing only danis506.add does not suffice on old versions of OS/2. You need to replace all drivers mentioned above. Also, you will run out of free space on the diskette - delete tedit.exe (a text editor) from the diskette. If you haven't an SCSI machine then you can delete SCSI drivers as well: delete the ones which relate to particular hardware, like AHA152X.ADD and so on, until you get enough space.

It should work :) In the old days, I run W4 with a 13 GB hard disk. Naturally, with Daniela's drivers, the original drivers shipped with W4 were useless to me. The possible problem can be with versions of the drivers. Perhaps, you will need some older wersions. The older versions are not on Hobbes.

Hi,

As I recall, for a large hard disk you need an updated FDISK for Warp 4.

Grab the update at:

http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/free/extpart/expartw4.exe

Its a self-extracting EXE, but you can unzip it with any good unzip app (Info-Zip can do it).  If you're working with an original build / install of Warp 4 (the 1996 version) you'll need to use the kernel, os2dump, loader, os2dasd.dmd file, format.com, and fdisk included in the file.  You can use the Danis driver instead of the IBM1S506 included in the EXE.

This FDISK works with drives larger then 8.7 GB.  You're still limited to putting the boot partition on a partition within the first 1024 cylinders of the drive though, but if you keep the boot partition to anywhere under 10 GB, you'll be fine (just about all my own boot partitions I usually set at 2 GB, then put everything else on another partition)

BookWorm

I think it was a bad disk. *D*U*H*!*!*!* I have everything partitioned now, and I'm about to install.

If you get your floppys at yard sales and thrift shops, scandisk them first. :-[

Now, where can I download a service pack (oops, I guess it's called a fix pack here - Like I said, I'm an absolute beginer) for my so called brain, so I will quit overlooking the obvious?

ivan

Hi Bookworm,

Most of us started out as complete beginners with OS/2.

To solve your upgrade problems go to http://www.os2mt.tk and download OS2MT. It will check what you have and download what you meed to upgrade - including fixpacks, utilities, drivers, network, runtime and odd updates.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was afraid of this. It's the CD that's bad. :'(

Where can I get OS/2 Warp 4.52?

Saijin_Naib

There are, ahem, shady ways of getting it but I always found the trackers to be empty or for some random NLS like German or Russian.

Oh, I would *never* do that... :o (I have dial-up :(  )

> but I always found the trackers to be empty

What are "trackers"?

Saijin_Naib

Trackers are part of the Bit-torrent file-sharing system. I would offer to send you an ISO over aim for evaluation purposes, and the offer stands. My AIM address should be in my profile.
