Hello everyone, I trust your enjoying this spring weather.

First the equipment:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:R32

IBM Thinkpad R32 > 2658 > BPU
P4-M 1.6 GHz Processor
512 Meg Ram
40 Gig Hard Drive
Swappable UltraBay Plus CDRom - Floppy

Software:

OS/2 Warp 4 Blue Box including
OS/2 CD
Device Driver Pak 1.0 CD
Application Sampler CD
Installation Disk
Diskette 1
Diskette 2
plus assorted extra software and literature.

My quest is to install this package on the system stated above.
Why? For the challenge, maybe. To be different? Sure!

If you know this system you already know the problem.
I can make any disk with all the latest fixes and suggestions and still get stuck
at the same point.
Swapping the Floppy Drive for the CDDrive
Installation Disk works
Updated (from the IBM site) Diskette 1 works
Diskette 2 works but leaves the message about not finding OS2CDrom ( and thats true because the drive
is not in the system at the same time the floppy is)
When asked to insert the CDRom I reach the deadend and can't go on.
I have 2 USB ports 1.1
Is it possible to copy the CD contents to a USB Flash Drive and direct the installation to load
the USB Drivers(USBUHCD.SYS, USBD.SYS and USBMSD.ADD) and look for the CD files on the
USB Flash Drive to continue the Installation?
I've been trying different methods for weeks, including the methods from
http://xenia.sote.hu/~kadzsol/rexx/sajat/updcd.htm
and still no luck.
Thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter,

Two things come to mind:
1- If you have access to a USB floppy drive use that in conjunction with the CD drive (I have used this approach of a couple of laptops that didn't have a floppy drive).
2- Make a bootable CD and use that (This is the system I now use on laptops).

If you need information on making a bootable OS/2 CD e-mail me (ivanjt (at) free.fr) and I'll send you the instructions I used.

Do You say that You build bootable CD using UPDCD and this does not boot on R32 ?

After a lot of trial and error(much error) I've succeeded to get Warp 4 installed on my Thinkpad R32.

Via a "Bootable CD"

First I need to thank Ivan for the assistance he offered and although I couldn't get past the CDBOOT error on the first screen it gave me the incentive to go back and give UPDCD another try.

I kept on getting 1 error and a bunch of warnings on each build I tried. "Not enough room on VFDisk"
I eventually removed 4 xxxCDS1.FLT files that I didn't need and the error messages stopped.(Edit your Config.sys file to reflect the change.)

I copied my Original CD to the hard drive to speed up the process.
I moved the 2 folders from OS2Images - Disk_1 + Disk_2 to my Desktop and copied the updated Disks in there place.
(I made sure I compare the files and replace the old with the new and not omit anything different)

I made my build, made a VFD, and finally made as ISO
Burnt it on another system,(No burner on the Thinkpad) using CDBurnerXP

Popped the burnt disc into the Thinkpad, booted, partitioned and installed.
Other than my Country and my Network Adapter I left everything else as Default.

After the install was complete I added, Sound, Updated Graphics, USB support for Mass Storage(Flash Drives)
I loaded some programs. SeaMonkey 1.16  Adobe Reader, Flash, Java, etc,...

All works OK, Search engines don't like to work,(they crash)  but most everything else does.
I need to play a lot more with this.

So , "Is there a way to install Warp 4 onto an IBM Thinkpad R32?"
YUP!

CDBOOT error is caused by cdboot being fragmented.  There could be a number of reasons for this - it got messed up when I ziped it up, it became fragmented when you unziped it or the e-mail process could have been the problem.

Anyway you have it working now which is good.

I think your right about the possibility of fragmentation happening during file transfer.
But in the end all worked out and I learned a little more.
And isn't that what computings all about?

Thanks again.
