Need help with PCMCIA NIC install on Thinkpad 390
« on: 2009.06.25, 06:31:18 »
I've gotten WSEB installed on my thinkpad 390, but still struggling with trying to get a PCMCIA NIC installed and working. I gave up on a NE4000 card and am now working with an IBM etherjet. I installed the driver through MPTS and on the reboot, the driver loads but card does not come on. I went back into MPTS and specified port300 and IRQ 7 in the settings for the NIC. The driver would load again, but this time itwould beep and card would still not come on. Next, I had installed LANAID in OS2 according to the etherjet's card readme file and ran it, but all it basically does is tell me to run MPTS to configure the card which I have already done. After a fresh reboot, I ran selective install and set up PCMCIA support for this laptop. With the etherjet card in the top slot, I shut down and restarted. The NIC driver in config.sys loaded and I got a LINK light on the card, so that tells me it now has power. Unfortunately, the system locked right there and I had to cycle the power to get it rebooted. Now, the system boots to the OS2 splash screen and hard locks right there, even with the etherjet card removed.

Seems like a resource conflict. What to do next?  From previous failed installs, it seems that installing PCMCIA support causes major problems even before trying to configure any PCMCIA physical device.

It's really cool to run WSeB on a laptop. Power usage compared to other servers is minimal. Mine uses 11 watts serving WebSphere application server. Commercial installations of Websphere typically use 100 times as much. With the cover closed, the temperature stays low, and the hard drive will last for years (OK, I do regular backups anyway)

I used a DLink ethernet card with cbenable to make it work. I used PC Card support version 5. Later versions do not work. Before installing PC Card support, I installed all the latest fixpacks.

Look at my web page for hints.

OldBeagle,

The IBM card should work. The PCMCIA on that Thinkpad should work with OS/2 as well.

Here's some things you may wish to ensure you did:

(1) Make sure you have the ThinkPad Configuration Utility for OS/2 installed (and verify settings)

(2) Make sure you have the Card Services drivers and tools installed and configured properly

(3) Check and record all resource usage and ensure that the NIC is not trying to share any of them (IRQ, address, DMA (if applicable)).

Best,
Rob
