Followup to Thinkpad not getting DHCP connection to router

ok, checked some things, still not getting a valid connection from the thinkpad. All my other computers connecting through the router fine.

The router's configuration status page shows the Thinkpad's NIC is connecting at 10mbps at half duplex. I went into MPTS and entered in full duplex in the proper field. No change.

I cannot tx or rx pings on the thinkpad either. I can ping 127.0.0.1 however.

I did ifconfig lan0 192.168.1.66 but that did not help any.

I manually entered in an IP in the TCPIP config notebook, but that did not work either.

Summarizing lantran.log, it says the NIC is detecting cable type:
the media detected: 10baseT
Full Duplex mode (selected)
IO mode enabled
SYS0318 message file \MPTN.MSG cannot be found for message 0003.
Adaptor 0 is using node address 0004AC1AC45A. The token ring format is 00203558235A.

I'm thinking the half duplex issue is the problem. One concern is that there's a program called LANAID for this NIC that's supposed to be run to set it up. I execute it according to the readme file, detects I'm running OS2 but it just says to run MPTS to configure the NIC and then no option but to exit. Maybe the NIC is locked in half duplex mode for some reason?

First, the ping on localhost is meaningless, it never gets to the card.

Your lantran.log should look something like the following - less the V-SWITCH sections and with a different adapter listed.

LT00073: FFST/2 is installed but is not started.  LANTRAN.LOG is being created.
IBM OS/2 LANMSGDD [04/14/00] 6.00 is loaded and operational.
IBM OS/2 LANDD [04/14/00] 6.00.02

Adapter 0 has 152 NCBs, 220 sessions, and 27 names available to NETBIOS applications.
NETBIOS 4.0 is loaded and operational.

IBM LANDD is accessing IBM 802.3 LAN Interface.
Adapter 1 was initialized and opened successfully.
Adapter 1 is using node address 00E07DD36F0C.  The Token-Ring format is 0007BECBF630.
IBM LANDD was successfully bound to MAC: VSWITCH_nif->VECTOR.

MPTN.MSG should be in MPTN\BIN  I think the message 0003 is the one about an interrupted system call, which could mean anything.

The half duplex mode could be a red herring as I have a friend that brings her computer round every so often for me to check and it plugs into my network at half duplex without problems - a bit slow though.

What IRQ does your card use and is it in conflict with some other device - if the card driver does not support IRQ sharing and the IRQ is shared there is your problem.  If that is the case solving it could be a problem.  Some of the card setup programs run in DOS, if yours does just make a DOS boot disk - or CD - and run it from there.

No sure which driver you use, but for different drivers there can be selected within MPTS - AFAIR click on adapter and options. AUTO, 100Mb, 10Mb, half-duplex..... and such things can be changed there. But not every driver supports this and the options are different (the are defined in one of the NIC-files).

As long as you are not absolutly sure you know what you do, leave them at AUTO. The default value should be explained anywhay after <F1> or clicking HELP together with the possible choices.

On the other hand, as long as the LINK LED lits, the link is established. And if it does not work, it's a software problem. (Except some very rare case where non standard CAT5(e) cables connectors or more than the max. defined length of 100m is used)
