And now . .. .

Damn you Haiku ;)

Well, at least we have QT almost ported to eCS-OS2.

We can not allow this OS beat us ;)

Why not exactly? They've obviously done something right to have gotten where they are today (a functioning Open Source re-work of BeOS).

Its hardware support is also pretty decent. It boots perfect on my new Netbook, a feat that Linux and eCS have not yet accomplished. Combine that with a really clean UI and a very light & fast OS, and I can only wish it the best. Once Haiku gets a functional Wireless stack it may well be my new netbook OS.

miturbide

yes, I don't know the completely Haiku History, but Im really amazed how they pull out to have an open source replacement for BeOS. Did the BeOS source code go released as open source ?

As far as I know, the only BeOS code to be open-sourced was for the Tracker (the taskbar thing). Everything else was a ground-up rewrite. Palm bought the BeOS code and I believe it was then transferred to Access (Access Linux company). What they intend to do with it? Nothing :\

warpcafe

Well, I never heard of Access Linux... but the last company to have the rights for it was YellowTab I guess and they were selling it under the name of "Zeta"

This is the company that holds the rights to BeOS.

They make the NetFront suite. It has been used on the Sega Dreamcast for Internet browser and a myriad of featurephones for their browser as well as a mobile office suite capable of working with Microsoft office files as well as PDF, TXT, and others.

ENVY... that's the word.

Well, I guess they had a very clear plan and motivated people willing to donate their time. I believe they had access to most of the code and they ported part by part using the original code as a test based. Kind of porting PMMERGE.DLL and DOSCALLS.DLL using binary compatibility and of course adding features along the way.
OSFREE is "our" most serious effort on the same direcction but it'll take years to see results, unless more people join.

On the other hand ReactOS (a ground up clone of WinXP), announced that they had failed to meet the objectives of the project and now they are going to try a different approach (this after 11 years!!!! of development).
Sad,,, but I'm kind of glad that kernel wasn't selected to be the base for a OS/2 clone.

Do you have a link to the ReactOS news?

That is the latest ReactOS public news. It does not sound as you have said Leonard.

Plus, where did you hear that Haiku had access to the source? As far as I read, the only code they had access to was the Tracker and everything else was built by them?

Hi!
Here is link to osnews on react os:
http://www.osnews.com/story/22750/ReactOS_Proposes_Radical_New_Win32_Subsystem

I do agree that osfree is some path to the future for os/2 / ecs future. Free, reimplementation of os/2 subsystem on top of microkernel L4.
I would like more people get attracted by that idea, as osfree team definitely needs and deserves for support from os/2 community. At least they have something more on table than just another pointless petition to IBM.

btw. I was always against choosing reactos kernel as platform for osfree - now it turns out there were good reasons not to doing that.

Saijin_Naib

Very interesting. Good to hear that ReactOS will be pushed forward. I really think its a great idea.

Also, OSFREE is a fantastic project and I do believe should be supported heavily (like Haiku was). However, it does not make business sense for Mensys/Serenity to do so :\

Hi Leonardo (lpino)

Yes, ENVY, is the right word that can describe my feeling ;)

I also believe that we need to support OSFree. We need to get more people motivated into it... and try to get also more developers to that project too.

But I also like the idea to work in an Open Source eCS-OS2 replacement in two ways . People/developers supporting a  down-to-top OSS replacement, like OSFree working on the kernel and basic stuff. And the people working top-to-down, making eCS-OS2 applications OSS replacements that runs over eCS-OS2,... and hope that one day we can join them together for a full Open Source OS/2.

So, if anybody makes an open source replacement for every single DLL over eComStation it will be great too.

Hi guys,
For osfree, at least, OS/2 not a moving target  like windows :) .

I've periodically looked at the osfree site and it's making good progress. But I'm not a programmer, so really can't help.

Saijin_Naib

It does indeed look like stuff is going on. I'm glad to see that. Where have I heard of Yuri's name before? I feel like he has done a lot of other stuff for OS/2 and eCS....

Anyone know what the project status is for Voyager?

abwillis

Voyager's whole purpose has changed.  I don't really follow its progress much now that it is no longer the purpose to create a new WPS, in fact I am not really able to determine what its new purpose is.
