OS/2 date issue
« on: 2010.02.25, 11:43:54 »
Hi All,

We've got legacy equipment running on OS/3 warp 3 and recently we needed to look for PCs that are OS/2 compatible. We started using the Dell Optiplex 740 which is a big jump from the IBM M51-M55 we used before it seeing its a jump from Intel to AMD.

Obviously we needed to install OS/2 from scratch because the ghost images we've had isn't compatible.

We are experiencing a date issue now where OS/2 is changing the date from 30 Nov 2009 to 31 Nov 2009.
I've simulated the problem for February and it's going to happen again this month by going from 28 Feb 2010 to 29 Feb 2010.

I also say OS/2 is changing the date because when I simulate the date change in the BIOS, it goes over to the next month.

Please help! I hope it's as simple as just applying a patch I've missed.

Thanks in advance!

What fixpack do you have installed?  If you are not sure, run SYSLEVEL > LEVELS.TXT from the command prompt, and then use the E editor to view levels.txt.

The only thing I could find in the levels.txt related to fixpacks was:

C:\OS2\INSTALL\SYSLEVEL.FPK
OS/2 Warp 3 Service Level
Version 1.00   Component ID 566933010
Type Fixpak
Current CSD level: XR0W037
Prior CSD level: XR0W037

Is there a FixPack that addresses this issue?

You have fixpack 37 installed, which is Y2K compliant. Fixpack 42 was released, but I don't think this will make any difference.

Is this an application, or the OS itself that reports the date wrong? Very weird.

Well, I change the date by running 'date' from the cmd window and change it to 28/02/2010.
Then I go ahead and change the time using the 'time' command from the cmd windows to 23:59:00 and wait for a minute.

The strange thing though it that if you run the 'date' application the current date is displayed as 29/02/2010 and if you try and change it to 29/02/2010 I get an error: 'SYS1036: The system cannot accept the date entered'
Edit: You can't even change the time when the PC's date is 29th of Feb!

Now that is strange! I've updated the PCs BIOS to the latest version as well.

(I'm going to try and update the OS/2 software to the latest FixPack solong)

Can't see any significant differences.

FP38 has one minor Y2K fix - a problem with WIN-OS2. You have nothing to lose by trying FP42 tho - most apps that work on FP37 will work on FP42.

But...

Do you have any applications open whist making this check. Use CTRL-ESC to bring up the window list and make sure you have nothing running.

Also, can you post a copy of your CONFIG.SYS please - lets rule out any rubbish drivers such as SystemView or TME10.

Regards,
Moby

Any help?  :)

You'll need to unzip it, plus a copy of the CSF fixtool.

This link might help

Hi,

First, don't follow the above instructions unless you want to create a pile of 3.5" floppy disks and play toaster for about an hour.  There's an easier way to install Fixpaks right off the hard disk.

Since you're warp 3 (not warp server) you might want to stick with Fixpak 40.

Fixpaks 41 and 42 were technically only for Warp Server 4, which was based on the Warp 3 codebase plus all the LAN stuff.  Without hacking your syslevel files Fixpak 41 and 42 usually don't install on a Warp 3 machine, but 40 works well.  Some people have had luck with FP42 on their Warp 3 machines, some people have experienced grief.  However 40 generally works for all who have tried it on Warp 3.

To install directly off your hard disk, first grab FP40.  The easiest way to install it is from the RSU version of the fixpak.  From IBM's ftp site grab all the files:

ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/rsu/xr_w040/

unzip all the xr_w040x.zip files into their own folder (say, c:\fp40 as an example)

Unzip the csf143.zip into its own folder (for example, I usually put it into c:\os2serv )

You do not need the fpinstl.zip file for this method of installing fixpaks!  It was used in the older web-based RSU install, but we don't need that file anymore (IBM doesn't even support the web-based install any more, so we do the steps manually)

Create yourself an archive directory for the FP backout files

md c:\archive

Change to your c:\os2serv directory, and from a command prompt, run:

os2serv  c:\os2serv\csf c:\fp40

Eventually the Fixpak install tool will pop up.  Click on the fixpaks to install and click install.

That's pretty much all you need!

Thanks guys, will give the fixpack tomorrow a go when I'm back in the office!

But as Moby said, it's most probably not the fixpacks as the IBM is running the same fixpack as the DELL is currently.

If you have another Dell Optiplex 740 available (or indeed another PC) then I'd be tempted to take your new OS/2 installation harddisk out of the current Dell PC and try another. It's not impossible (although unlikely) that you have simply chosen a defective PC for your new OS/2 machine. There could be some kind of RTC rollover problem. The Optiplex diagnostics downloadable ISO also check for this.

Hi Fahrvenugen,

I followed your guide to the tee and when I try to install the FixPack (After I highlighted the FixPack and clicked Install) I get an error: "Install failed, RC 1. Check C:\OS2\INSTALL\SERVICE.LOG for information that may help determine the cause of the failure."

Here is the Service.log:

Hi Moby,

This isn't isolated to just one DELL machine.
We've got about 16 on our network and all of them are displaying this symptom.

Hi Charl,

I've seen that problem before - it usually means that when the last fixpak was applied the archive directory was removed, but the pointer file is still there.  This probably happened when FP37 got installed, it isn't uncommon, its just a pain in the you know where when it happens (the first time this happened to me after about an hour of messing with it I ended up calling IBM for help - back in the day when IBM still had phone support for OS/2).

We just need to remove / delete the pointer files (logf000.OS2,  logstart.os2, and possibly logarch.os2) from the install directories. There's copies of any / all of these files in both c:\os2\install and c:\mmos2\install

To fix the problem move the files to a temporary directory and try the fixpak install again.  Here's what we'll need to do.

Open up a command prompt and create a temporary directory for the files (always good to keep copies of the files in case you need to back out):

mkdir c:\templog
mkdir c:\templog\os2
mkdir c:\templog\mmos2

Then change to the c:\os2\install directory:

cd c:\os2\install

The files are read only, and if I recall they might be tagged as system and hidden files too (I can't recall exactly).  Turn off the read only / hidden / system attributes:

attrib -r -s -h logf000.os2
attrib -r -s -h logstart.os2
attrib -r -s -h logarch.os2   <---- Not always on all systems, but might be there

move logf000.os2 c:\templog\os2
move logstart.os2 c:\templog\os2
move logarch.os2 c:\templog\os2

cd c:\mmos2\install

attrib -r -s -h logf000.mpm
attrib -r -s -h logstart.mpm
attrib -r -s -h logarch.mpm   <---- Not always on all systems, but might be there

move logf000.mpm c:\templog\mmos2
move logstart.mpm c:\templog\mmos2
move logarch.mpm c:\templog\mmos2

**Note - forgive me as I'm going mostly from memory here, the logf000.mpm and logf000.os2 might actually have numbers other then "000" depending on what has been done with fixpaks in the past.  To find out the exact file name(s), once you change to the install directory do a:

dir logf*.* /a

And that should give you a list of any files that begin with logf - even hidden files.  Look for a logf???.os2 and logf???.mpm (whatever numbers it sticks after the logf, usually 000 or 0000, something like that) - those are the file you're looking to move out of the install directories.

Anyways, once you've moved these files out of their respective \os2\install and \mmos2\install folders then you should be able to complete the fixpak installation.

And if it doesn't work, then post any new service.log with any other errors it comes up with and we'll figure that out.

Take care!
