Unsigned Firefox add-ons

Back again-
Some days it is hard to win.

Suspect Adblock Plus was contributing to my earlier problem.  When it is disabled Firefox does not abend -

I uninstalled my add-ons and went out to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox  to get a new copy.

Now - Adblock - and everyother add-on which I selected is shown as 'unsigned' and I can't get my version of Firefox to install any unsigned add-ons.

I've cleared the cache, history and cookies, I've rebooted, etc. etc.and I still have no success.

I did about:config and find no options or overrides for unsigned add-ons there.

In all the years I've been on OS/2 - since 2.1 - this last month has been the most frustrating and difficult.

Hope this 'unsigned' solution is an easy one.  Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks
Dave

What version of Firefox are you now using?

If it is the one by Rich Walsh then you have to run the 'nightly tester tools' before any of your addons will work.  Any other version and I would suspect that something is messed up in the mass of firefox config files.

Assuming you have a separate profile directory then just delete the firefox directory and re install.  If you don't have a separate profile then export your bookmarks for safe keeping and again delete everything - also run cleanini and/or checkini to clean up the ini files.

There are four addons that I install just after ant new install of firefox - pref bar, adblock plus, no script and old location bar, and now the nightly tester tools with 3.7a4pre.  None of them have given any problems, that is why I suspect you have a borked install of firefox.

Ivan,

Borked?  Love it - one of my favorite portions of ST TNG - need to add it to my vocabulary.

It appears I am borked bad.  I erased the current Firefox (which is old 2.0.0.13) and downloaded a new copy (stumbled into Bon Echo versions) and I have the same problem.

All add-ons show as "Unsigned" and they won't install.

I'll  have to go back to a full backup of the system and see what happens then -

Thanks - I'll be back in a couple of days

Back again and still stymied.

Before I went and restored the old full drive backup I wanted to try a trick or two.

I found the release copy of 2.0.0.13 and installed it.  No change in the results - add-ons appear unsigned and won't install.

I hid my profile, and reinstalled Firefox, letting it create a new profile.  The same results - unsigned add-ons won't install.

I played around with add-on list and tried add-ons I didn't want - WOT, FLASHGOT and others.  They are signed and did install.

I tried my wife's XP system.  XP shows the signatures on the add-ons as invalid, but Firefox on XP will install the add-on.

By now I am frustrated.

I decided to explore Firefox options with about:config and found this:
network.jar.open-unsafe-types

I changed the setting to 'TRUE' and everything which wouldn't install before, will install now.

Was I just lucky on my easter-egg-hunt or is this an appropriate solution to the problem?

I'd appreciate feedback.
Thank,
Dave

Hi Dave,

By the sounds of it your system is really borked - that word again, it was one of my late daughter's most used word to describe a SNAFU.

There might be an easy way to improve matters.  If you don't already have OS/2MT then grab it from http://www.os2mt.tk/ install it and let it have a look at your system.  It will make a number of recommendations that you can use as a basis for upgrading.  I use it to show me what I need to add on a new system, then I use the separate download functions to get what I want (saves having to remember).

When you have gone through the necessary updates - it shows updates and fixes, you should find it possible to run a later version of firefox.  I would recommend that you copy your mozprofiles directory, after you have cleared the cache, to another partition if possible, delete it and then let firefox recreate it according to the settings in your config.sys.

If that doesn't fix the problem then we need to look at other possibilities like something strange in your ini files that needs a good going over with cleanini and checkini and maybe xfix if you have xworkplace installed.

My 'network.jar.open-unsafe-type' is set to false - this is with the 3.7a4pre using the nightly tester tools addon to get all the others to work - all 18 of them and they auto update without problems.

Ivan -
Thanks again.

My deepest sympathy for having lost a daughter - I can't imagine the pain.

Yes, I am borked.  OS2MT comes up with a number of possible downloads/fixes for the system.  Some choices I'm not qualified for, as I have no Software Subscription .

I think it is time to consider installing eCS as the best solution.

Hi Dave,

Thank you, indeed it isn't easy even after 20 years.

Back to your problem.

First up there is the possibility of adding tcpip 431 and the updates - that should get you the 32 bit stack (there were a number of them on testcase and I think I have those in my archives).

Apart from that I can't think of much else that you would have to upgrade except snap graphics if you don't have it already.

Because I was trying to understand what your problem might be I checked our bog standard warp4 box  today - OK it's not quite bog standard, it has the above mentioned upgrades as well as FP17 and DD03.  Yet there are no problems with firefox 3.6.3 running apart from the fact the machine is underpowered and doesn't have more than 512 Mb of memory.  All the firefox 3 range seem to improve performance the more memory you have.

Other than the above I can't think of what could be causing the problems you are having si it might be time to do a fresh install of the op sys.  I had to do that when we moved to AMD 64 processors on some of our machines - up to then it had been just a case of moving the hard disk when we upgraded but those boards required SATA drives.  The first was a fresh install, the others were an image of that.

Dave Palmer

Ivan,

Maybe my senility if over powering me - but wasn't a Software Choice  service required for the upgrade to the 32bit stack?

Dave,

I think it might have started that way but I got the copy I use off testcase and I assume the copies floating about on the net are the same - the copy I downloaded to check appears to be.

Ivan,

Thanks for that piece of information - it looks like I  should be able to make it work - the TCPIP upgrade that is.

I'm slow to respond these days - the sun - i.e. summer - finally appeared here on the USA west coast.

After weeks, seems like months, of rain - the sun is finally shining and hot.  We've got outside chores to catch up on, some equipment broke and needs repair, we're organizing a community Independence Day parade and computers and software have slipped into the background for now.

I'll stay in touch and hopefully I can seek your advice as I progress.

Regards
Dave
