Hi Ivan - nice dog :) We love our retrievers - we also have a 9 year old one too :)

Anyway, back on topic :) Ghostscript can be installed wherever you like - you just need to ensure that your edit /cups/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster to correct the path to the Ghostscript install - it defaults to /gs/gs8.xx

Cups and Gutenprint currently MUST be in the root of the same drive.

Hi Paul, I downloaded and installed both those files you listed but still no success-- guess I'll screw with it some more tommorow --- thanks.

Paul Smedley

Hi Ivan - what model Panasonic printer?

ivan

Hi Paul,  KX-P7110 lan attached.  At the moment I'm using the HP4L driver that works -sort of  :)

Hey Paul, went into "self-distruct" mode about 2:30 this A.M.! So started anew today re-installing1.4.4, now when I "Add Printer" it works and asks for a password (this never happened in previous installs) -- but I can't get any login combo to work, supposedly "root" should do it but guess thats changed? What should be used as the default?

thanks,   klipp

Hi Klipp - I've never seen a password dialog here in the 'Add Printer' dialog - so not really sure....

klipp

#22
Its in the on-line help under "where do I begin" and says to use the root username & password -- guess I'll have to try and figure out how to eliminate that as giving it my Linux user & password doesn't get me in.
Well, I need to add a little more to that statement,It usually asks for user name & pasword, sometimes it just hangs "Waiting for localhost"! But apparently its correct that it asks for a username & password when you use "Add Printer"

Hi klipp

I seem to remember a similar problem when testing an earlier cups1.4.x build.

I also think that I "cured" the problem by changing the DefaultAuthType in \cups\etc\cups\cupsd.conf to DefaultAuthType Basic.

Regards

Pete

klipp

Hey Pete! Its been a while, how are you doing? Yeah, I saw that and it was already set to "Basic" -- I'm begining to "smell a Rat" with this particular box, even though 2.0 GA seems to be preforming flawlessly, guess I'll go to a different machine and try setting it up. Gotta get this #$&%%(* Samsung working as I am now "Printerless"!

Thanks for the reply,   klipp

Hi Klipp, the only thing I can think of it that as I use samba server, on my machines, I have a basic list of users on my system.

I did try and remove the stuff that machines this necessary, but maybe with 1.4.x I missed something.

To help confirm, you could generate a debug log - hopefully this would show where the authentication request is coming from in the CUPS code.

To do this:
edit \cups\etc\cups\cupsd.conf & change: 'LogLevel warn' to 'LogLevel debug'
Close cupsd.exe
remove \cups\var\log\cups\error_log
Restart cupsd and try add pritner until you get the username/password request.
Close cupsd.exe and send me the error_log

klipp

Paul, I'm back to using 1.3.11 on the same machine with no problems now, tommorrow I'll plug 1.4 back in and try and recreate the problem as per you're instructions and post the error.log. Normally I too would be using it with Samba Server, but seeing as I'm an expert at "screwing things up" I do everything on a test partition first.

Hey Paul, I don't know whats going on, everytime I re-install 1.4 I seem to get different results, one thing thats common to all different installs (4 of them now) is it gets stalled waiting on localhost. This latest one now gives the User & password window when I try to delete a printer. The error log is below. I had one install where everything semed to work but spent most of its time "waiting on localhost". I can delete everything and go back to 1.3 and it seems to always work fine, then when I add 1.4 things go ballistic. I still think it might be this box (or ME!) and am going to try on another machine.Hopefully when you get time you can take a shot at creating a .PDF file that will allow creating the OS2 printer driver.
