Hi

I just was notified about this news. (Tuesday, 05 April 2011 06:00)

"With the Generation 88 release, we incorporated improved usability features such as the eComStation Operating System offering a simplified user interface and improved networking and file transfer."

http://www3.uic.com/wcms/WCMS2.nsf/index/News_Events_413.html

I don't know any other eComStation Operating System, so I guess it is the same. Congratulations for the new OEM device!!!

"Generation 88 is uniquely suited for emerging markets" Possible I should start looking on the local labs to see if they have this machine to offer some support ;)

IIRC, many such machines were originally controlled by OS/2. With numerous of the companies "stuck" on an OS/2 solution for such, and various having the need to replace older failing boxes, it only makes sense that they support eCS. They probably continued from and expanded upon their original Generation 8 (and earlier) implementations.

For instance, their ancient GSM1 version from 1999 or earlier... which ran on OS/2.

There are a few other big companies "stuck" in similar scenarios. The amount of specialized machinery that OS/2 used to (and in many cases still does) control is whopping... elevators, fire control systems, traffic monitoring systems, metro payment systems, metro train systems, assembly line systems, older z/OS mainframe systems (yup, onboard OS/2 based system for the system management) and numerous other vertical markets...

Here's a few more such devices that also ran/run OS/2 - go to http://www.smtnet.com/index.cfm and search for OS/2.

It's not only the US that uses OS/2 to control machine tools, I know of one company in Europe that still makes machine tools controlled by OS/2.
