Hi,
I have an external cd-writer from HP model M820series which i am trying to use to install OS/2 4.0 but the disks which i have created does not recognize the unit. I have installed OS2 wARP 3.0 in other partition but existing PCMCIA software does not activate the unit (ony say IN instead READY; it seems that it is not able to allocate IRQ, etc). Do you know where i can find a valid driver for this external unit? If it is not possible, is possible to generate all the disks from the OS2 WARP 4.0 CD ROM? I would do a slow installation using the disks...thanks a lot for your help

Hi,
I have an external cd-writer from HP model M820series which i am trying to use to install OS/2 4.0 but the disks which i have created does not recognize the unit.
In the past I used these diskettes --where I upgraded some drivers -- to install Warp 4 in a 600e Thinkpad.  You may try to install your Warp 4 by downloading them: http://www.chingonazo.com/TEMPO/OS2W4Ins.exe

If you do download them, execute the self extracting file by typing:

OS2W4ins.exe

it will expand four(4) files:

OS2W4D_0.DSK
OS2W4D_1.DSK
OS2W4D_2.DSK
loaddskf.exe

Use the last file utility to expand those other files with the DSK extension into three diskettes, as follows:

loaddskf.exe OS2W4D_0.DSK
loaddskf.exe OS2W4D_1.DSK
loaddskf.exe OS2W4D_2.DSK

Proceed to install your Warp 4 from the 0(zero) diskette and post your results.  It is likely that you will need support for the PCMCIA (since that is where your CD device is attached, correct?) attached storage but try those diskettes anyhow.

I have installed OS2 wARP 3.0 in other partition but existing PCMCIA software does not activate the unit (ony say IN instead READY; it seems that it is not able to allocate IRQ, etc).

Quite often you will need to play  with the IRQs (and free one) that are usually occupied by other devices.  As an example, you may want to deallocate the IRQ for the infrared device.

There is a ThinkPad utility for your machine that will permit you to allocate/deallocate IRQs, among other settings, from within your OS/2 partition, visit Leonovo: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=DSHY-3RYRAK
and more specifically for the utility, see: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-488JF5.html

You will also find a video driver there.

A word of caution1: when your machine is off, press F1 key (and hold it down pressed), then turn on your machine and it will go into Easy Setup.  Verify that the Quick Boot option is disabled; if it is enabled disable it and save your changes.  Quick Boot must be disabled --otherwise the changes that you make to the IRQs from within the OS/2 ThinkPad utility will *not* take effect because Quick Boot is designed for WinXX specific settings.

Do you know where i can find a valid driver for this external unit? If it is not possible, is possible to generate all the disks from the OS2 WARP 4.0 CD ROM? I would do a slow installation using the disks...thanks a lot for your help
You may create all the Warp 4 diskettes using the utility in the CD-media:

if from within the OS/2 environment, use: X:\makedsks.cmd
If from within the DOS environment, the use: X:\makedsks.bat

There is an alternate procedure to install Warp 3 Connect and Warp 4 from your hard disk;  I believe it was covered in an older post.  Do a search for it.

As before, Buena suerte!

1 I am assuming that your machine is similar in functionality to a TP 600e, since IBM utilities are mostly uniform in function.  On the other hand, your access to the Easy Setup my require the pressing of other than F1.
Additionally, in your machine Easy Setup may be called something else but make sure that you disable any references to a Quick Boot, or Quick Post, or similar.
