Hi,
I have a IBM thinkpad 560E 2640-30U. I have installed OS/2 Warp 3.0 spanish version but I am not able to get full screen resolution. The installation program has installed VGA driver by default (640x480) while my chipset is Trident TVGA89000c but I am not able to find the driver in network. During installation process, full screen is shown so I guess that it is possible. Can someone help me? Thanks in advance and Best Regards.

Que tal Alfredo?!

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu is one of the OS/2 archives for what you are looking.  For instance, a simple search for "trident" showed several versions   http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=trident&pushbutton=Search  , amongst which you will see an potential candidate: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/drivers/video/trid32.zip .

On the other hand if you have applied at least the OS/2 fixpak 35 (you will find on the site above fixpak 42), I would recommend that you install the gradd driver: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/drivers/video/gradd97.zip

Based on prior experience, the gradd drivers seem to exhibit more stability than the first option.

Buena suerte!

Ok, Alfredo, here is the link for the Spanish version of your Warp 3 last fixpak 38: ftp://ftp.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/fixes/v3.0warp/spanish/

Do not attempt to apply fixpak 42, because it is for the server version based on Warp 3 kernel but branded as Warp Server 4.

You will also need the "kicker" utilities, that will examine your OS/2 W3 for components of the operatings system and multimedia that will be updated.  You will find them at: ftp://ftp.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/fixtool/spanish

And select, specifically: ftp://ftp.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/fixtool/spanish/css144.exe that you will download and/or move into the directory that you will create below:

From within your OS/2 Warp environment, open a command prompt and make a directory by typing:

MKDIR CFS

proceed to change into that directory by typing:

CD CFS

Once there expand the self extracting file by typing its name:

CSS144.EXE

Amongst the files that you will see expanding will be SERVICE.EXE; this latter file is the one that you will use to apply the service fixpak 38 to your OS/2 Warp 3 --once you have all the physical diskettes done, of course.

You will create the diskettes with the loaddskf.exe utility (as before explained elsewhere) as follows:

LOADDSKF.EXE  XRSW038.1DK   A:

where, naturally, A: is your floppy device in your computer.  You will need about 20 diskettes for the procedure because  the character after the .(dot) will go from 1 thru 9 and then from a thru k.  Naturally, there is another nicer procedure to install the fixpak from the hard drive and/or from the CD-device but it is somewhat more involved.

After you have done all of the above, change to the directory CSF --if not already there-- and simply type:

SERVICE.EXE

The utility will prompt you to feed your floppy device each specific diskette needed for the fixpak application, accordingly, simply follow its promts until it finishes its job.

Please, check your personal messages in this forum (the left square shaped icon) if there is an unanswered issue that I have not addressed.

Thanks a lot! I will apply the fixpack and later the video driver. Unfortunately http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/drivers/video/trid32.zip did not work and display utility does not work. I am still on VGA with poor resolution 640x480x16...I will update the forum after applying fixpack. Again thanks a lot for your kind advise!! Best wishes Alfredo,

Hello,
I have applied the CSF but video issue still remains. W2K in other partition has detected trident video accelerator 96xx/938x chipset and i was able to set the resolution at 800x600. Any suggestion? Thanks!

I *think* there was a special video driver specifically written for the Thinkpad 560 Series - I used to own one of them. I know with the right driver it works... but I might be confusing that model with one of the 700 Series. I'll see if I can find some more information for you...

If it is this model, there is a video update disk that you need to run, and a video driver specifically for that model (and similar chipset model Thinkpads).

I'll let you know if I find anything...

In the meantime (I havent had a chance to read it yet) check out this file:

http://www.os2site.com/sw/hardware/ibm/thinkpad/560_tips.txt

Postscript version here:
http://www.os2site.com/sw/hardware/ibm/thinkpad/560_tips.ps (can just drag it to a PS printer queue - or open in GhostScript if you dont have a PostScript printer - or just read the txt version)

I cannot find your model (either the 560E or the 2640-30U) on IBM's support site. I did find the 560X (which is a 2640 Series)

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?subcategoryind=0&familyind=50082&brandind=10&doccategoryind=0&modelind=0&doctypeind=9&validate=true&partnumberind=0&sitestyle=lenovo&template=%2Fproductpage%2Flandingpages%2FproductPageLandingPage.vm&operatingsystemind=50685&machineind=58936

I don't know if the Video Disk there will work or not... and the FTP Site which was the archive of everything no longer has the drivers archived...

What you want to find is "Video Features Disk" for your model... as well as "Utility Disk" and possibly a few others. (some of which enable some of the Thinkpad specific functions such as the OSDs for battery and so-on.

Check this link out as well (it DOES mention your model, as well as a fix being issued for video and other issues for OS/2):

Que tal de nuevo, Alfredo?!

If Robert's help did not solve your video issue, possibly you may be able to apply the Gradd97 driver (or IBMSDD704) --referenced in prior post(s)-- into your specific machine.  Note that in the "hey day" of your machine, a specific procedure to apply the driver might have been a prerequisite (as Robert touches slightly).

There are many misconceptions about the video installation into OS/2.  No doubt, those were the result of OS/2 2.X struggle with appropriate video drivers; those misconceptions were also the result of the MS propaganda whose "munchkins" spared not a forum to flame OS/2 proponents in years gone.

On the other hand, you want video on Warp 3 and I had a virtual machine with Warp 3 installed in VGA in an archive. And I decided to submit an entry blog that will show the following default VGA resolution subsequently converted into into 800x600 and 256 colors: http://www.chingonazo.com/10_Revert-to-VGA.JPG

Follow the illustrated instructions posted at http://www.metztli-it.com/blog/ and let the OS/2 Forum know abou tthe outcome.

De nuevo, Buena Suerte!

Also,

Try this link...

http://greyghost.dyndns.org/pccbbs/mobiles/

It's a mirror of the (now defunct) IBM PCBBS site which contained a lot of the drivers and reference material for all the models. Somewhere in there should be the driver you need (but there are no cross referencing pages to point out which one). Even the MWave drivers are there - which other people have been searching for in vain for a while...

Will post if I find something more useful. Good luck.

Also,

Try this link...

http://greyghost.dyndns.org/pccbbs/mobiles/
[...]

That resource link is a cool repository that should be kept for the existing and future OS/2 users, Robert.  Notwithstanding, for emerging OS/2 users all that data simply discourages their continued participation because it is in blob form, i.e., not organized and/or categorized.

I believe that pointing out to Alfredo that his video problems might be resolved with the following file: http://greyghost.dyndns.org/pccbbs/mobiles/vftpkos2.exe according to its accompanying description http://greyghost.dyndns.org/pccbbs/mobiles/vftpkos2.txt would get him going.

Experienced OS/2ers would immediately know where (approximately) the compressed video support files reside in that blob but for the relatively new OS/2er some guidance is appropriate.

Best...

El Vato,

Much thanks... I didnt have time to dig for it for him.

TO EVERYONE:
On another note, maybe IBM will allow someone to put it back online with some sort of cross reference table. I'd gladly host it and try to set that up if someone knows a contact at IBM to get permission to do so.

Eventually, maybe we can add as much new stuff to it as possible (and in the case of Software Subscription stuff, provide links to the right place... like how the OS/2 Device Driver Repository used to do things). I'd gladly donate the server space for it... and make it something where people could upload any drivers and information they were aware of to help full out the list.

Nice mirror and about all the pdf docs; there is another possible way to bring life into the documents again; I know that Martin (our news master) is organising quite a few old documents within the Library section here at OS2 World. So one idea would be to organise the documents within there.

About the drivers; I doubt that IBM even have the old site code available and as well I also don't think that they would even care if someone sets up a ThinkPad Driver Matrix again; highly needed and would help out a lot of people. So I positive to that idea.
