I hope this is in the correct area. Had a massive crash. attempt to reload ECS, it will not install.
After unpluging all but a new 2T sata drive I can get to a maintence desktop. BUT none of the
disc functions will work, so ecs will not install. all of the old  stop after 3 lines of CD install with
(approx) cannot read your cd drive. Is a 2T drive too big, or? Thanks Ben

Which version of eCS? For v1.2MR or earlier, yes, for a boot drive, it is. You will need a 500GB (or smaller) drive, or to partition the drive with only a 500GB install partition. That has been resolved in eCS v2 (and possibly in older versions with updates). I put some pretty extensive details on this someplace in this forum... one of multiple threads related to it is here:

One would need (at least) the entire LVM 14.105 package to remove that limitation, which means updating the install disks with it, so one can install.

That aside, sounds like you have disk issues. I'd download Hitachi/IBM Drive Fitness Test (ISO), burn it to a CD, boot off it, then scan all disks using the Full/Advanced Scan. It's free and comes in very handy.

It would also help if you gave some details of your system - motherboard, processor, over clocking or not, all drive sizes and types SATA and/or IDE, type of cd drive SATA or IDE, was it running eCS if so for how long and which version.

I ask for this information because there are several things I can think of that may cause a crash of the system, ranging from a fault in the power supply to an actual crash of the main hard disk with a problem on the motherboard in as well.

To try and narrow the problem down.

Can you get to the bios setup screen?  If so does it show the hard disk/s and cd drive?  What are the voltages shown on the hardware monitor screen - is the 12v actually 12v +- 0.5v, is the 5v within the same range and what about the 3.3v?  If the voltages are correct then we can assume the power supply is working - at least under no load conditions.

Next, try and boot with a live linux cd or dvd.  If you can get to the linux desktop try and see if you can see the hard disk/s.  If the live linux cd will not boot then you most probably have a problem on the motherboard or with the cables.

I can't advise you more without knowing something about your system.

Thanks to all!  system is ECS 2.1. board is N68S+ biostar (Not my favorite, ran but 9 months).
memory is 2 meg. AMD dual core. Another system (winxp) also went down - all but the C: drive,
which is hurt. I am in a industrial area, Big spike? The setup disks won,t touch either system
I know about DFSEE, BUT NO JOY..

Industrial area, two systems down - Yes, I think that was a big spike.

Now comes the problem of finding out if the disk/s are OK or not.

First get a USB to IDE/SATA adapter, then you can take the drive out of the unit and use the adapter to plug it into a working system.  You can then use DFSee to check it.

If the hard disk/s pass inspection then get another power supply, unplug everything of the old one and use the new one in its place.  If you can bring up the bios screen the motherboard may be OK.  If you can't then it is a new motherboard, processor and memory as well as the new power supply.

Of course, if the equipment are covered by insurance then scrap everything and start again.  I have just rebuilt a system for a client that suffered problems very similar to yours - power supply was decidedly off voltage, the memory wouldn't pass memtest, the 2 core processor insisted it only had one core and the hard disk kept up a high pitched squeak.  We did use the original case.

Finally got an install! Gave up in the two old IDE disks and installed two SATAS.
One new and one 0ld wiped. This allowed a new install. FYI the WINXP computer
had one parameter changed in set up. Almost had to be a spike that shifted
some bits.
None of the ECS system left - sigh and rebuild...
Thanks to all who helped, Ben
