Install process is more or less unchanged, except that the new PCI.exe file detects the hardware better (in my case atleast) but it does take a bit longer.

I experienced WPS hangs (no mouse response) upon boot with looping sound. This was remedied by removing the /SMP /APIC switches in the ACPI wizard and rebooting. The kernel was the W4 kernel, so not sure why those switches were there. However, upon rebooting, the switches were back. O_o

Another interesting issue is the re-implementation of COM.SYS and VCOM.SYS which will prevent the install from going on if you are not there to clear the messages in between boots.

Another interesting problem is that MPTS is broken by too many NIFs. I had internet access after the first boot, but not after that boot, and MPTS crashes if I try and use it to configure anything.

Saijin_Naib

Internet issues were resolved by removing all .nif and .os2 and .msg and .txt files that were NOT my vfeta2 NIF files from the IBMCOM/macs/ and re-installing that driver with protocols under the now functioning MPTS.

However, my network card could not receive an IRQ, which troubled me at first until I removed the /APIC line for yucks, and sure enough, networking is back. In fact, I am writing this under eCS 2.0rc3, firefox 2.0.0.9 :)

Final thing to note is this.
This line in the config.sys read thus:
REM  BASEDEV=IBM2FLPY.ADD (two spaces between REM and BASEDEV statements)

It should read thus correct?
REM BASEDEV=IBM2FLPY.ADD (one space between REM and BASEDEV statements)

These are some of the things I have come across from a clean install, so hopefully someone at serenity takes note and fixes these things for the next RC.

Otherwise, impressions are good :P

!
New discovery. Right clicking an .exe file does NOT yield a context menu with create program object!
There are also not the familiar context menus for converting image files between formats...
Where did this go?

bjorso

I have experienced the same IRQ-problem with my VIA network card. I removed several cards from /IBMCOM/MACS to be able to start MPTS. Then I added this to PROTOCOL.INI:

[VFET2A_nif]

   DriverName = VFET2A$
   IRQ15OVR = "YES"

The second line should say YES. After that, both network and mouse works again.

Saijin_Naib

I re-downloaded the ISO and used FastSum to verify the file's checksum, so I will be re-burning it and re-installing eCS 2.0 RC3 to see if these issues dissappear.

Thanks for the IRQ switch for the NIF, I never saw that option.

Okay, reburnt/installed again. Same issues. /SMP /APIC are applied to the ACPI.PSD file no matter if you have no switches on the line in the install process. This prevented me from using the mouse to do anything again :\

Create Program Object context menus are also missing, as well as the conversion menus, so this leads me to believe its RC3, not a bad download/burn.

Is anyone else experiencing these oddities?

bjorso

My testinstalls on two laptops, none is DualCore, did not add any switches to ACPI.PSD so no problems with that. The install on my Shuttle AMD DualCore added correct switches but the IRQ problem with the VIA-card prevented both network and mouse to work. I managed to make the mouse working again, I'm am not sure how I did it? (It's very difficult to operate a computer without mouse!!)

Well, after adding the IRQ-switch to the VIA-card there is no collisions anymore and all hardware works as expected. I had no problem with that on RC1 or RC2? On RC2 I could not use Panorama since it was impossible to register one of the needed classes.

The problem with context menus must be related to eWorkplace? I have not noticed that but I will compare it to older installations. I always try to upgrade directly to XWorkplace since I find that a much more complete solution for the desktop.

Saijin_Naib

Im not sure about eWorkplace being broken, but all the Chris Wolghemouth classes for images and multimedia are broken, and can not be replaced using install tools. Even after multiple passes of checkini. I will try to install xWorkplace and see if that can register classes properly.

Hi,

I have not found Cris' classes to be broken... I have found issues registering them though. And like registering any class in the WPS, if it isnt done properly, it can cause other problems...

So what does that mean?

To me (in my limited understanding) when I say the classes are broken, Im saying that the context menus dont show, the files dont have the notebook tabs they should, the MMIO procs are not functioning, and I can not get them to work/register. Is this what you mean by they are not broken, but simply not registered?

If so, does that mean you are experiencing the same symptoms as I have noted in your install of RC3?

Finally, do you know how to "fix" these issues, and if so, could you help me out?

Thanks!

(also, since you are more knowledgeable do yo think you could make an official bug report thread with the things mentioned here?)

RobertM

I havent tried RC3 yet... just my experience from dealing with such issues before. My *guess* is that Serenity needs to change the order in which the classes are installed.

It's also highly possible that another set of classes is causing the issues you are seeing (and preventing/super-classing parts of Chris's classes from working).

If you d/l'd the RC3, you should be able to log into their forums and submit a comment or bug report... someplace I have a login, but I "lost" it (someplace on my hard drive in some file I saved it to) months ago.

They have a link on the RC3 desktop to leave comments/reports, but its not up for RC3 yet, it just brings you to the support page of ecomstation.com

Edit: (its 4 am, so forgive me)
Confucious say:Serenity make rc3 classless bastard!
Funny? eh?  ::) Because.. the classes... broken for me  :-\

:'(

Anyone else having the class issue?

melf

Just a little nice picture from RC3 on LG F122PTV with dual core. Background by Davif Graser from the Gallery section. Regarding those missing menuitems (Create another and so on..). That is fixed by going to Workplaceshell>Menu page 2 and check the missing menu item. Of some reason it has been unchecked.

Saijin_Naib

Nice :)

I "fixed" that earlier today, another member posted that somewhere (eCS newsgroup?) and I am ashamed I never knew of that page! Now I know, learning is good!

Melf, do you have the issue with the CW-multimedia IOPROCS not working? For instance, OGG or MP3 or WAV not playing in the WPS like they should?
