Hey guys, Ive been trying to set up an X environment under my RC3 setup and I have not been nearly as successful as I could have hoped.

Heres 2 things first:
Does the 4.5.0 release support my 7600GT chipset? I cant find anything definate... Says it should work in VGA mode or something similar even if its not 100% supported.
If it does not, can I grab the video driver file (or whatever X uses) from a newer release and put it into my 4.5.0 release?

Second, can I use panorama with xFree86 or not? I dont like to use SNAP on this chipset because its not accelerated and SNAP VESA is not bearable to use, not after I saw how fast Panorama is :)

I will get back to you on the error messages I get once I reboot, I am in windows at the moment.
Thanks!

I think the easiest way to install Xfree86 is with the OS/2 Maintenance Tool (OS2MT). The homepage is here: www.os2mt.tk, plus there is an uninstall option.  If it does not work with your video card just uninstall it :)

Hey, here is what happens if I start the Xserver. I dont know if you can see it, but the side of the screen is about 10 pixels repeated a bunch of times, and there is graphical corruption along the top. I have started a support ticket with Panorama about this, because this did not happen under SNAP.
X gave me an error before it crashed, I have to reboot to post it.

It's quite weird that you have a

(EE) Unable to locate/open config file.

in the error log which should not be there. I have a

D:\usr\X11R6\lib\X11\XF86Config

file which XFree86 reads on boot up. Unfortunately, I have an ATI card and not your GeForce card and so its contents about the video card will probably not apply to you:

Yeah, the config file is there.... Not sure why it says it cant be found. As for the graphics error, Im attributing it to Panorama. If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know. I wanna get this X environment set up properly.

jep

According to the docs....XFree86 use it's own drivers to talk to the graphic card hardware.

I managed to set Xfree86 up and run the configuration etc. for 4.5.0, but liked the "PM integration" that HOBLinx provide (eCS app. CD 2) and tried/use GIMP 2.2.8 packaged by Alex Taylor (wpi packages).

Advice: Remember to install the xfree86 runtime files by hand if you try to use GIMP. They're not installed together with the rest.

I presonally prefer using Hoblink X11 - it is quick and painless to install and emulates X11 server well (especially for GIMP :) ).

BTW1: those runtime XFree (? if I remember correctly) libraries for GIMP are downloadable and installable separately as a separate WPI package, so even if you use Hoblink as an X server, it will work.
BTW2: Hoblink comes "free" (pre-registerred by Serenity) on eCS 1.2R CD2, so if you have bought it, you have it  8)

Saijin_Naib

I do have it, but nothing installs from the eCS 1.2r CD-2. I get errors.

StefanZ

Hhmmm... it works for me.

On the other hand, I cannot install IBM Desktop On Call - I get errors in installer...  ???

Saijin_Naib

Yes, thats the program that I cant install. I think I saw on the news-zone that the installer looks for the largest drive with free space to unpack the temp files (my NTFS drive) and since it cant write it, it fails. You have to hide that drive or something. I just never got around to doing it.
