I will also check it out above. :)

It is very informative. Thanks.  ;D

I wonder if a LPWS could be made using a pico-itx? ??? http://www.mini-ix.com

http://forum.eeeusers.com Here is a forum for users of the EEE PC. I asked them to add an 'other' section for those interested in using eCS on the EEE PC.  8)

There is another new, HowTo oriented site here: http://eee-developers.com
I know the admin is still accepting requests for additional forums.
Shameless plug: Check us out.

I will check it out. Thanks for the link.  8)

The Asus EEE PC has a memory card reader. Would it work with eCS?  ???

there are problems accessing USB cdrom during boot. Because of BIOS suport, eCS can use USB cdrom to do initial boot but once eCS drivers load eCS can not see the rest of the cdrom. So you can use USB cdrom instead of diskette images but not to do a complete cdrom install.

I have done eComStation install on Eee PC but have not gotten wired NIC, wireless NIC or sound drivers to work.

Below are some of the steps I used to get the install started:
1. create Linux USB bootable USB key
need one 2GB key OR two 1GB keys OR one 512MB key and USB cdrom
2. zip copy of eComStation cdrom to USB key (2GB key or 2nd 1GB key)
(also put eCS install key on USB)
** step 2 can be skipped if you have USB cdrom   **
3. boot linux with USB key
4. delete all partitions on SSD drive  (use fdisk or gparted)
        ** for steps 4 and 5
** depending on the Linux you use
** you might have to add Linux packages
**  gparted and mdostools (FAT16 filesystem)
5. create 800MB FAT16 partition at end of SSD drive   (use fdisk or gparted)
           label partition "ECS_CDRUN"
4. unzip eCS cdrom zip or copy eCS cdrom to "ECS_CDRUN" partition
5.  and eCS key to "ECS_CDRUN" partition
6. boot eCS using USB diskette drive or using USB cdrom
            "use own boot options"
              a.   change video to VGA

There are many tutorials on the Internet.

Here are a couple:

It might be easier to use eeeKubuntu to prep Eee PC for the eComStation install

http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ubuntu:eeexubuntu:home

download and burn eeeKubuntu ISO

If you have USB cdrom then you can directly boot eeeKubuntu cdrom on Eee PC and use it to delete/create/format partitions on the EeePC. If you do not have USB cdrom you will need to boot the eeeKubuntu on a different machine (that has a IDE cdrom) to create a bootable eeeKubuntu USB key. See web page for how to create bootable USB key

partition the Eee PC SSD device using "fdisk" or "parted" commands

the command to format label the FAT16 partition would be similar to the line below:
sudo mkfs.vfat -n ECS_CDRUN -F 16 /dev/sdXn      (sdXn is partition ID, change as needed)

Is it possible to install eCS from an SD card? ??? They now make some that are at least a couple of gigabytes in size. The EEE PC has a mem card reader builtin. Would this still work with eCS?  ???

BigWarpGuy

Could one use an USB thumb drive (not optical but SSD) to install eCS from? ??? Could one copy the install cd to the USB drive?  ???

Yes, see

Thanks for the link.  The whole page has very useful information.   8)

7.4.2.1 IBM OS/2 Boot Manager

9.2 Booting the Asus EeePC from an OS/2 - eCS system on an SD Card
It is under 9.2 which is near the bottom. :)

Installing eCS onto my EEE PC might be a little difficult since it is not exactly performing correctly. It takes several tries before it boots up (the power light and wifi light comes on but nothing shows on the screen). It is not exactly stable since it can crash / freeze up. This is frustrating since it take so many tries just to get it started. I was listening to some music files I have on it and it froze up during the song (it sunded like broken/scratched record; it kept repeating a certain part) and the screen was all weird. I had to turn it off.  I am not sure if it was software related or hard ware related. Installing eCS might keep me from sending it back but I will give it a try anyway. I have the cd-rom drive that I ordered. It is small and it uses two usb ports (one to connect to the cd from the pc and the other to power it). I will be trying to install eCS either from the usb cdrom or from the sd card.  8) This is an update.  ;D

Documentation of How To install eCS 2.0 RC4 to an SD card and boot the ASUS EeePC is now finished attached to this thread and will be uploaded to Hobbes in both German and English versions.

The system is running well, but only in VGA and without audio or network support at present. Still some work to do in that area.

Cheers/2

My EEE PC is malfunctioning.  :'( Once I get it to work propperly or have it fixed or replaced, I will be able to trying installin eCS onto it.  ;D

Thank you for the information.

BigWarpGuy

There is a delay in trying to install eCS onto my EEE PC due to problems that made it necessary to send it back to Asus (the repair place in the USA). I hope they can fix it. http://forum.eeeuser.com has a section where there are others trying to install either OS/2 or eCS onto their EEE PC and working on the problems.
