Looks comptaible, mostly reasonable price, VIA C7m processor for great AES encryption support and ultra low-power consumption.

Shame the awesome! price of 279$ is only with the stupid software services to their Linux distro for 2 years @ 14.99/month. If you dont do that, the lappy alone is 479$, which still is not terrible. Hardware looks like its mostly supported. Are the VIA processors supported? They should be...

It would be more in the 'hardware' section. It is a nice notebook computer and the prices is very competitive for the size of notebook computer.  ;D

I think the VIA cpu is supported. I have some mini-itx boards with VIA cpus that I plan to use. They might be a little obsolete since I had them for awhile. When I do get around to buidling my mini-itx projects, I plan to use eCS on them.  8)

"    * A 8.9-inch display and Windows XP: Confirming that the machine at CeBit will come to market in April, the new Eee PC will have a 8.9-inch screen and a higher 1024 x 600 resolution A 8GB SSD will be available running Windows XP. A 12GB or 20GB SSD model will be available with Xandros.
    * Hard Drives: Asus is considering giving customers a choice between their current offering of solid state drives and regular hard drives in the future.
    * Intel's Diamondville: Shen revealed that the low-cost notebook platform will adopt Intel's Diamondville processor in Q2 rather than VIA's mobile computing platform.
    * More Colors and Stylish Looks: In May or June, Asus will release "very stylish" versions of the Eee PC. Shen says they will have a New York city sleekness.

It would probably make it easier to install eCS onto it?  ???

"May 21, 2008 (PC World) The nonprofit One Laptop Per Child project has shown the first images of its next-generation touch-screen laptop that goes by the name XO-2. According to Nicholas Negroponte, chairman of OLPC, the laptop is under development and has a goal of costing $75. Negroponte showed off images of the XO-2 at an OLPC event at the MIT. He said the first XO-2 is slated to be built by 2010."

It is way nicer than the first one. I wonder if one could install other operating systems onto it like they did with the EEE PC(?).

A week or so ago, representatives of VIA Technologies, Inc. visited us to show off their OpenBook reference design. VIA designed the mini-notebook to demonstrate to manufacturers what is possible in an ultra-portable computer. You can't buy the OpenBook directly from VIA, but you'll see it or concepts in the OpenBook in products from other manufacturers soon. The OpenBook is 9.5" wide by 6.9" deep and 1.1" to 1.4" high. It weighs about 2.2 pounds. The display measures 8.9" and features a resolution of 1024x600. All images courtesy VIA Technologies, Inc.

It is a design study but could be a sign of what is to come in mini-notebook computers.  8)

The HP Mini-Note advertises a list of OS's which includes FreeDOS, but when you try to buy, only two models include SUSE Desktop Linux (which you pay for), and the rest have Windows. OK, so let's "configure" so it is custom, oh then your only choice is Windows. :P

"May 29, 2008 (IDG News Service) Dell Inc. released pictures of an ultraportable laptop that appears to be designed to compete against Hewlett-Packard Co.'s Mini-Note 2133 laptop, after Michael Dell was spotted carrying it around."

News of a mini-notebook computer from Dell is revealed.  8)

It looks very nice specs-wise, I read about it not long ago on some other site. I'm liking the trend toward ultra-portables, if only they weren't so expensive :C

BigWarpGuy

The Asus EEE PC is a low price. It would be nice if all the ultra-portable computers were in the same price range.  ;D

"No, not the price, unfortunately. I'm talking about the new all-screen clamshell."

Could eCS be installed on a computer that had a 'virtual' keyboard?   ???

"Boca Raton (FL) – A small Florida-based PC builder is jumping on the cheap notebook train with a UMPC-sized device that is offered in only one version and priced at $299 – which makes it, at least as far as we know, the cheapest notebook currently offered in the U.S."

Here is another small notebook computer. It is very low priced.  Seems a lot are getting on the 'small notebook computer' bandwagon.  ;D
