desktop icons positions shifting upward on each WPS startup

Hi all,

I was always feeling lucky to be not affected by that behaviour, but now it has hit me with a vengeance:
At every startup of the WPS, the icons get shifted upwards, giving me a WPS scrollbar at some time. I know that I had read a question about that very same behaviour some time ago but I seem to be unable to find that again. So I'll ask here...:

How to turn that annoyance off?
I never experienced that before, but since I'm running eCS 2.0 RC3 on a T41 I do.
I have snap (professional, not SE) installed, along with the latest XWP.
(Like in all time before, when the effect didn't happen)

Regardless of what xCenter settings I use, regardless of what "SET SDDICONSIZE=" I use and regardless of xPager or not... it happens. What -the **ck- am I missing? Any ideas?
Has anyone experienced that too?

TIA,
Thomas

Same here with RC1 and RC4 and in different machines. Really annoying

+++ FOR HEAVENS SAKE I FOUND IT!! +++

...meaning: perhaps not the solution, but the place where I read about it:
In the eCS bugtracker (-slapping-my-forehead-) of course!!

For those who have access:
- In total, it's 2 tickets, namely 0001620 and 0001839

leaving the wishy-washy besides, here's the core of it:
Quote
I wish to concur with David that when using Carston Arnold's Cleanini55.zip and the command "Cleanini /c /delall /multipass /restart" the problem of the drifting icons goes away. I have confirmed this in both RC1 and RC2. This also includes the use of eCenter and eComCenter (WarpCenter) together on fresh installs.

On a side-note, they're talking about icons shifting DOWNwards, not UPwards... but any solution that stops icons from shifting in whatever direction is appreciated to get rid of the annoyance. So let's see.

Me thinks that this is a setting (I assume it to be somewhere around the "GRID" crap) that is enabled by default in eCS 2.0 installs and then never vanishes correctly. And that's why I didn't had it before as I never turned on the option that I presume to be activated by default now in 2.0 RC's... however just guessing here... will let you know if it works once I have time to test-drive the cleanini stuff (wherever that my be).

Thomas

Hi All

Not being a user of the e(x)WP and e(x)Center I have never had this problem  :-)

I have seen it being posted about fairly often which puts me even further off the idea of maybe eventually using the e(x)WP bits...

Here is a response in the eCS ngs about this problem:-

> > Each time I boot eCS, the desktop icons, which I have arranged "from
> > left" (in other words, down the left side of the screen) are positioned
> > farther down the desktop.  I'd like to get them to stay where I put
> > them.  I recall having this happen with eCS 1.0 as well, and I know it
> > got fixed, but I don't remember how.

This is a known issue created by a conflict between eCenter and eComCenter.
It's triggered because the eStyler enhanced shutdown automatically opens
eComCenter on shutdown, even if you don't ever use it.  If you have both
set to reduce the desktop size, opening both of them causes the desktop
to think it has to shrink itself too much, causing the 'creeping icons'
phenomonon on some systems.

Solution: either turn off that setting in one or both objects, or else
delete the eComCenter object totally.

Post is in ecomstation.support.install, Subject Re: "Sliding Desktop Icons", dated 11/01/04

Hope the above helps

A similar issue seems to occur with xWP installed (though I don't know if it is xWP related or not). I have a WSeB machine where on each reboot, the icons travel up the desktop, causing a vertical scroll bar to show. The machine has the latest xWP installed, and Styler2. Another WSeB machine (running the same versions of both) does not exhibit this behavior. One (possibly related) difference, is the machine that shows this issue has a lower resolution set.

At a loss on how to solve it, since it's definitely not eCenter/eComCenter/eStyler related. :(

Run the program

cleanini.exe

At a command prompt, type

cleanini /c /delall /multiplass/ /restart

Do a Google search to find the program if you do not have it.  This will fix the problem.

David!

Thanks for the help! Will give it a try one day... (it's my main server, and I rarely restart it anyway... so next time I take it down, I'll give it a go).

Thanks again!!! :)

Pete

Hi

The /restart at the end of

cleanini /c /delall /multipass /restart

is not to restart the system - just the WPS.

So, reboot not required.

Regards

Pete

hermi

This sometimes happens for me when I have to reboot the machine with a hard reset.

This solves this problem on my machines:

- Reboot to a command line (ALT-F1 at beginning of booting)
- rename the \XWorkplace or \ecs\SYSTEM\eWPS folder to a diffetent name
- normal reboot (XWorkplace or eWPS is not started)
- make scroll bars disappear
- normal reboot (perhaps this step can be skipped)
- rename the renamed XWorkplace or eWPS folder to its original name
- normal reboot

Not everythin should be fine.

Folks,

thanks for all the contributions.
In the meanwhile I had found the "official" homepage of Carsten Arnold, the author of cleanini. It's
http://www.ca-arnold.de/e/index.html

Mind you, I seem to remember that Ulrich Moeller (initial author of xWP and WarpIN) mentioned in some part of the readme/helpfile for XWP that the incorporated "ini fix" mechanism is based upon a piece of software by another author... and I guess it's cleanini that was incorporated... I might however be wrong and will check.

That would basically mean that (if the above is true) I don't need cleanini itself but just keep down both shift keys when the WPS (with XWP) is starting up to get access to an appropriate fix mechanism. Again, I will need to check. As weekend is approaching, chances are that I will be able to find some time this evening.
But I'll keep you in the loop anyway...

When you said

... this is *EXACTLY* what "my issue" is!

XFix is based on part of the checkini.exe, not cleanini.exe.  The sources for checkini can be found at Netlabs.  The cleanini sources have never been released.  It is the cleanin.exe program that will fix the moving icons.

David

warpcafe

Works.  ;D

Indeed, xfix is based on Henk Kelder's checkini. Not cleanini, which is by Carsten Arnold.
While xfix didn't work out the intended way (as expected - but who knows, better try...) cleanini  8) did the trick.

For those who are about to do the same... note that there were two typos in the suggested commandline
"cleanini /c /delall /multiplass/ /restart"

...obviously (as one might think) it must read
"cleanini /c /delall /multipass /restart"

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, you all saved the day.

Hi Thomas

As you can clearly see, I can't type.  Thanks for correcting my errors.

David,

you're more than welcome. Thanks for supplying the hint (even if with typos - tht doesn't matter).
