Open source petition to Innotek?
« on: 2008.02.18, 12:41:04 »
I wonder whether it would make sense to start a petition to Innotek to opensource their former OS/2 software NOW.

Specifically I am thinking about the technology to produce wrappers for certain Windows software (aka the Odin Custom build called Innotek Runtime plus the build system to create a wrapped package from a genuine Windows Java etc.).

I don't think that a wrapped OpenOffice is very interesting, and a wrapped Flash 8, 9 is unworkable anyway (both for technical and legal reasons). The same is probably true for Acrobat Reader (but who knows?).

However, the Innotek Runtime has advanced features, that are not present in the public Odin tree, these might be of interest, and a newer Java 1.4.2 does not seem to be completely unrealistic using the Innotek wrappers, too.

While I am not calling for a real Odin renaissance, it would be sad, if that technology was lost for OS/2.

An additional issue would be the Innotek Fontengine, which probably would be quite interesting, too.

I doubt that any of these would have a negative impact on Innoteks or Suns commercial interests these days.

Just my 2 cents, what do you think about that?

Kind regards,
Herwig B.

I'm game. We need a font aliasing engine in OS/2, I never realized how horrible fonts are to look at when it's not enabled, blegh. As for the Innotek Runtime, it sounds only like a good thing for us to have to work with.

If this something that we should set up; I have no problem at all; but important question before doing so; have anyone asked or talked with Innotek what they are going to do with the code? Just so that we're not doing something blindfolded here.

Hi All

The thought occurs: We can ask Innotek for anything we want but it could be Sun that will need convincing if we are to get any of the useful source at all.

No harm in asking though - or maybe someone at Innotek will let a few things "escape" in the manner of Flash7  :-)

Regards

Pete

Hi all,

I'm not sure - this is only guessing... but does someone know of a "professional level" link between one person from Innotek and some other person at Netlabs? If there is, I think the chances are better to have Innotek give stuff to Netlabs than to "the community"...

just my 2 cents

regards,
Thomas

I agree with Thomas, if there is a professional connection with Netlabs, then this would be a better way to go. So back again to the original question, has any approach been made from any part such as SSI, MenSys, Netlabs, etc?

I think we (or someone from the community, who is close to them) should _talk_ with Innotek guys, not make a petition. They were our friends, so we shouldn't be so 'hardcore'.

Another idea, which relates:

It would be wonderful, if Innotek could help in the birth of a new Java version for OS2/eCS, being close to the fire at Sun..

I indeed did talk to innotek about that. I can't give out much details because that is a pretty sensitive topic but what will happen is that we will do some work regarding Odin/Java on our own. innotek did commit almost everything to the netlabs.org CVS repository and I am currently working on transferring that to Subversion.

So such a petition would not make sense right now, I am in contact with them and if anyone will get anything, it's probably netlabs anyway.

Definitely good news there.

Innotek has been good to the OS/2 community over the years, as the OS/2 community has been good to them.

It would benefit all of us who still use OS/2-eCS to have the source code to such work passed along, updated, and generally kept alive.

Nice going ktk;)

So this is good then :) How about the IFE and the Innowin runtimes? Or is that not open to be discussed yet?

About the Subversion transferring, is it finished yet?
