The electric Smart will have a 41hp electric motor, which will be able to reach speeds up to 70 mph and will have a range of 70 miles. Charging time for the all electric Smart is about 8 hours, and will cost you about $3 in electric. So if you do the numbers this means at present gas prices an electric Smart would save you some 70% of what you are paying now.

Also, this is what I read:

QuoteSmart Car of America gives you everything you want to know about this extraordinary vehicle

Where in the world were these kinds of vehicles forty or more years when I was doing my engineering apprenticeship... but like OS/2, things just evolve; and, at past 50 it will appear that the "best" is yet to come!  ;D

Thanks again pal; and, as was quoted above... it is as exactly what was said - "extraordinary"!  8)

I wish "OS/2" Developers (with the assistance of the OS/2 World Foundation...) can very soon suit up OS/2 with the applications (like Lotus Notes, Symphony...) to enable our beloved Operating System to adequately address those "proposal issues" being talked about and receive the same accolades as the "Smart ForTwo". Additionally, it would be really cool to see it outfitted with the OS/2 Operating System on board (integrated). ;D. One more very interesting part that was read was this:

QuoteCharging time for the all electric Smart is about 8 hours, and will cost you about $3 in electric. So if you do the numbers this means at present gas prices an electric Smart would save you some 70% of what you are paying now.

So, here is where the "SpreadSheet Functionalities" in IBM's Lotus Symphony, OpenOffice's Calc.... come in very, very useful to help do the "maths/economics"...

Now for the establishment of that distributorship/dealership...  8)

Kindest regards,

SAB.

I have read of some putting small computers in their vehicles. Perhaps one could install a car pc running eCS into the Smart Fortwo making it smarter(?).  ;D  It would be neat to have the strobe light on the front of the Smart(er) Fortwo. The strobe light similar to that on the front of the KITT car from Knight Rider television show (I hear there is a newer version of the Knight Rider show with a Ford Mustang instead of the Pontiac Firebird).

Are you quite sure that you are not giving too.... much away before you have gotten the "idea" of making the "Smart ForTwo" into a "Smart(er) ForTwo" patented... $$$

How about computing features for the "Smart(er) ForTwo" where "Stock Quotes" (nearest restaurant, prices for gas...) are visible in real-time (making it more or less into a "CAR-PUTER" as some may wish to call it). ;D ;D ;D The real truth about all of these possibilities is that OS/2 has Voice Recognition already integrated into the Operating System so. What better way to keep "both hands on the wheel" for "road-safety reasons..." while driving!

Here comes a real Road Warrior in the "Smart(er) ForTwo"!

Someone reading this thread from anywhere in the world must not really need a "j-o-b"!  8)

Best regards.

Patents? I wonder if that is listed in the phone book?  ???   ;D
8)

With a car computer, the last thing one wants is to have an os known for 'crashing'.  :D  That is why I like OS/2-eCS.  8)

Saijin_Naib

Yeah, hangs and INI corruption are so much better! :\

BigWarpGuy

What operating system would you recommend for a car computer?

Saijin_Naib

Truthfully? An embedded, a custom, or perhaps a purpose built Linux distro, as much as I hate Linux. It really is amazing for embeddeds, but I think its a crap desktop OS.

BigWarpGuy

I have Linux on my Asus EEE PC. It is not bad. I still want to try eCS on it.  ;D

Saijin_Naib

If you can manage to force it to install, I'm sure it'd be great. Do you have access to SSS so you can get the latest ACPI/PANO and all that? The guide seemed relatively easy to follow as well. Please do get it running! Its always good to see eCS install on another computer successfully, it helps build the database of working hardware.

Also, as was gleaned from Cnet News:

Microsoft: Ask us for driving directions

Microsoft wants to take Windows in a new direction.

The software maker announced on Monday its plans for NavReady 2009, a customized version of Windows Embedded that's specifically designed to power in-car navigation systems. The software is based on Windows CE, the slimmed-down version of Windows that is used for Windows Mobile.

Some GPS makers, such as Mio, already use Windows CE, though Microsoft says it is adding support for several new features with this navigation-specific release. New features include support for Live Search, Bluetooth, and MSN Direct, which allows real-time traffic and gas prices. NavReady 2009 should start showing up in devices starting this holiday season, Microsoft said.

This is not the first time Microsoft has tried to tailor its general-purpose Windows Embedded operating system to the needs of a particular market. Most recently, it created a version for cash registers. But even Windows Mobile itself was an attempt to tailor the generic operating system for a specific market.

The next version of the point-of-sale software, dubbed POSReady, is due out some time next year, Microsoft said Monday.

Given this Microsoft's push for an "Windows Embedded that's specifically designed to power in-car navigation systems...." one would guess that sometime in the not too distant future we would definitely realize that "embedded OS/2-eCS" that BigWarpGuy has spoken about.  ;D

Maybe, maybe not. eCS would need to have Bluetooth support (most Navs do), easier support of removable media for CF/SD expansion maps and maybe media, better codec support, and a touchscreen driver. If eCS can overcome these stumbling blocks, sure, I'd love to have it as an in-car solution.

As of right now, I don't think it fits the bill for me at all. I really want a Head unit enabled with the Microsoft Sync platform so I can control my phone and media players effortlessly with Voice command or on-screen command and menus. That's really amazing IMO.

Geez "Saijin_Naib"! You seem not to be too optimistic that OS/2-eCS can/will make it onto the dashboards of cars like the Smart Fortwo any time soon; but, one thing that you have got to remember about OS/2 and one that it has coming its way is that it was first where Voice Recognition is concerned; so, what if there is a preference for "Voice Commands" (which will be hands-free...) rather that a "Touch Screen"?  ;) ::) 8)

Right, but IBM Voice Type has proven to be difficult to get functioning in eCS 1.x and 2.x, and not only that, a head unit can NOT be voice only, there needs to be some sort of tactile control such as touch screen (eCS needs) or buttons (eCS can handle). Not to mention any of the other points I mentioned above such as BT and IOprocs and friendliness with removable mass storage that was not specifically readied for eCS such as map data and expansions on CF/SD as well as the vast majority of Mp3 players and the like that may get hooked up to it. I am, unfortunately, grounded in the here and now, and eCS, as stands, would not make a good in-car platform IMO. Argue that it may one day all you want, it means nothing what MAY happen.

Hi Saijin_Naib,

All your points are taken about the present limitations of OS/2-eCS; but, there are some things that have to be taken into consideration and one is that fundamentally OS/2 has in the past proven to be a more robust platform than Windows (apart from its multi-tasking and other capabilities); so, based on its known "carrier rockets class capabilities":

Quote

Software, which works under control of eComStation, carries out tracking of the starting of carrier rockets from the spaceports of the Russian Federation.

http://www.nic.spb.ru/homepage.nsf/pkexamp.html!OpenPage

which are second to none; and, I would be the least surprised if sooner, rather than later if some group provides OS/2-eCS with all or most of those enhancements/capabilities that you have mentioned; but, then again OS/2-eCS does not have to be just like Windows or Linux.  ;)

Enjoy!

One of the reasons I like eCS is because it is not like Windows.  ;D

It would be neat to run eCS on a pc in the Smart Fortwo. I wasn't really thinking of it being an embeded type system or having it run the car but that would be neat if it did. I was just thinking of a computer that is in the car like a stereo but that one could run computer apps on. It would be like the car computers in the projects section of http://www.mini-itx.com or some thing similar to http://www.geekmyride.net .  8)

http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/bmwpc/ BMW PC.  ;D With the pico itx, it could be even smaller. If one could install or run eCS from an SD card (like the romour says it might [other section of the forum]), it would be a Smart car with a smart comptuer runnign a smart os?  ;D
