reference was from a news article; unfortunately, you may have not have read all of this comment; or, you may have missed it completely.  :(

The Linux Desktop team explained:

An explanation: as a public, for-profit company, Red Hat must create products and technologies with an eye on the bottom line, and with desktops, this is much harder to do than with servers. The desktop market suffers from having one dominant vendor, and some people still perceive that today's Linux desktops simply don't provide a practical alternative.

Instead, Red Hat is focusing on desktop software that works with its server products aimed at businesses and developers.

A product called Red Hat Global Desktop that is targeted specifically at resellers, which focus on emerging markets, has been delayed for almost a year because of business issues. The company hopes to release it "soon," according to its corporate blog.

MGBs, Tanks, and Batmobiles

Remembering the "Smart ForTwo"; and, the Rolls Royce that is OS/2;D

Quote
Customers come to this crossroads in throngs, day and night. Ninety percent of them go straight to the biggest dealership and buy station wagons or off-road vehicles. They do not even look at the other dealerships.

Of the remaining ten percent, most go and buy a sleek Euro-sedan, pausing only to turn up their noses at the philistines going to buy the station wagons and ORVs. If they even notice the people on the opposite side of the road, selling the cheaper, technically superior vehicles, these customers deride them cranks and half-wits.

The Batmobile outlet sells a few vehicles to the occasional car nut who wants a second vehicle to go with his station wagon, but seems to accept, at least for now, that it's a fringe player.

The group giving away the free tanks only stays alive because it is staffed by volunteers, who are lined up at the edge of the street with bullhorns, trying to draw customers' attention to this incredible situation. A typical conversation goes something like this:

Hacker with bullhorn: "Save your money! Accept one of our free tanks! It is invulnerable, and can drive across rocks and swamps at ninety miles an hour while getting a hundred miles to the gallon!"

Prospective station wagon buyer: "I know what you say is true...but...er...I don't know how to maintain a tank!"

Bullhorn: "You don't know how to maintain a station wagon either!"

Buyer: "But this dealership has mechanics on staff. If something goes wrong with my station wagon, I can take a day off work, bring it here, and pay them to work on it while I sit in the waiting room for hours, listening to elevator music."

Bullhorn: "But if you accept one of our free tanks we will send volunteers to your house to fix it for free while you sleep!"

Buyer: "Stay away from my house, you freak!"

Bullhorn: "But..."

Buyer: "Can't you see that everyone is buying station wagons?"

Here is one thing that should have never been a issue, what is the problem with the damm dots in a file name.  I just downloaded the latest foxfire, then had to rename the file just for the archive to work on the zip file or any other file with to many dots in the name?  This goes for many other applications (Tor, Warpvision, firefox).  I may be very off based on this, and if I am please tell me how to correct this problem!

Hi All,

My hopes are that (Yes I'm definately no fundi nor Guru especially with regards to Networking) networking should work right out the box with regards to sharing files and printers amongst other OS's in a LAN. Various distros and flavors of Linux I've played with do this very well, OS/2 eCS on the other hand requires me to change settings of my XP box I use mostly for occasional gaming and Multimedia - after which I seem to lose my networking abilities from XP box in the way of not being able to play a networked game on a LAN nor share data with my peers? The quickest and easiest way to get things up n running on my XP box is to then just do a reinstall which takes approx 20min versus trying to get my network running again with multiple reboots and many hours of frustration later - I clearly don't know what I'm doing in this regard.

Another frustration I've come across is trying to make use of my USB Flashdrives or thumbdrives (ie Transcend 1Gb and 4Gb and 1 x Lexar 256Mb) that at the best of times I can only see and utilize 32MB of available data and I can not use nor access files created/saved from my XP nor Linux boxes? Need more time reading up and searching through the forums to get this working but I am impatient these days - where does time fly to?

I do like WarpIN as a central place for installing and uninstalling software, fixes, libraries, runtimes etc and believe this should be more adopted by developers as their installer. It does make a big difference when one has to search through installed software. Perhaps it can be enhanced to automatically download and install missing libraries and runtimes ala 'apt-get' in Linux where you are given the choice of downloading and installing missing dependencies or features.

"Saborion" re. "the Rolls Royce that is OS/2!" I'd rather liken OS/2 to a good and dependable small little Toyota, Nissan or Ford for that matter. If you want the extra mods, bells and whistles with these cars its a simple matter of installing them ie we Need better hardware support for OS/2 eCS. I personally know an owner of Both a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II and Silver Spirit and to quote him "If Ever you buy a Rolls Royce - You're a Fool! And You're looking at One!" :-) It's a Fuel Guzzler and especially high on maintenance costs - more likened to MS Windows :-)

Cheers,

John.

I go in and replace the dots with dashes and eCS sees the file as the type it is; whether it is a zip file or a Warpin file. It is minor issue but it would be nice not to have to do it.  8)

OS/2 doesn't need to rely on the extension to determine the file type. The extended attributes for the file should include the type information. I would say that the issue might be one to be raised to the maintainers of the files, but I haven't found it annoying enough to dig into it further.

Hi Greggory

The easy fix is to setup Associations for whatever you use as a zip/unzip frontend.

As an example I use the OS/2 "native" Zip Control frontend available from the downloads section of http://www.RPFSoftware.com

The Properties for the executable, ZIPCNTRL.EXE, now has these Associations in the Current names section

*.*.*.*.*.*.*.ZIP
*.*.*.*.*.*.ZIP
*.*.*.*.*.ZIP
*.*.*.*.ZIP
*.*.*.ZIP
*.*.ZIP
*.ZIP

I'm sure you can work out from the New name entryfield and the Add button on that page how to achieve that  ;-)

The above works fine - I have yet to meet a filename that is along the lines of 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.ZIP but have no doubt they will arrive at some point and I will then need to add another line to the above  :-)

Have fun  :-)

I want to see a conclusive fix for the walking icons of death. I like using the gridded desktop array because then the icons are in nice, neat rows, but they are always scooting around the desktop. This means that if i add anything else to the desktop, it wont be lined up in the Y+/- plane with the other icons, and I have to reposition all the icons to keep everyone in the same planes :C

This however, only started after my first WPS hang and PMSHELL kill. So I suspect this has something to do with that, but I dont know how to fix it.

Hi John

I'm using eCS1.2R currently and have absolutely no problems with using FlashThumb/Pen/Keyring/Hard USB drives.

Sadly I cannot say the same with the eCS2.0RC4 install I have recently completed - looks like the LVM engine and several other important bits got backleveled and no longer work as they should. Hopefully the eCS guys will get that sorted before release...

Anyway, presuming that you get an eCS system with working USB the Help and FAQ included with USBcfg may help a bit - or a lot  -  with regard to getting USB drives working  http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/usbcfgb7a.zip

Regarding USB MSDs, if you have them formatted for FAT32, then you may find the new FAT32 driver (v0.9.12) released on Netlabs useful.  According to the changelog, starting from this version a specific fix has been introduced that should get the recognition of a device faster.  I have not tried it yet, but you can find it here:
ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/fat32/
You can choose between a ZIP or WPI archive.

You might also find some useful advice here:

So much so for second hand information; ;D  Got to tell you dude that as an engineering apprentice some years ago I actually was involved in the machining of certain parts for a old Rolls Royce that was donated to the training center that I was attending at the time. Did your friend also tell you that you could place a "penny" on its edge on the engine while the engine of the Rolls Royce is running and it will not fall. ;D ;D ;D ; and, if Performance Plus, Deskman/2, Desktop Observatory, InCharge, uti-maco Safe Guard Desktop, Watcom, Arcada Backup, BackAgain/2 et cetera et cetera... are indications of what are below the "sealed" hood of the Rolls Royce (that the the OS/2 World Foundation is trying very hard to get a look under...  ;) ); then, it is supposed that if one wishes enjoy a ride then why mind the "costs". Nissan makes some of the highest powered and tunable/reliable engines in the world. I'd rather take that as a compliment. If you dont believe me, look at the engines used in the Silvia, the Skyline, or even the lowly 180sx. You can massage over 500HP from any one of those blocks if you know what you're doing (1k+ on the Skyline).

Blue Warper, I can confirm that the new FAT32 driver is MUCH faster. Like, WORLDS faster. My 8gb FAT32 CFII card takes about a second or two mount now, not the minutes it would take prior! That is the largest FAT32 volume I have on hand at the moment, I intend to test this further once I get a data cable for my M:Robe MR-500i (20gb).

Props on the ne FAT32 IFS! Hopefully we shall see more improvements in the coming times! Likewise, I'd love to see our NTFS driver get some love :)

I suppose that I have got to agree with you "Saijin_Naib" in certain respects on the above statement given the known "skill set" of the "Japanese" worker on the whole.  ;) ; and, one do not need to be reminded about the world's auto industry from "WW2 to the present time" - just ask the US auto worker.  ???

It was indeed a pity that IBM's PC Business (previously supported by a Japanese workforce) went to the Chinese. It is left to be seen what Lenovo (if it follows in IBM's footsteps) will offer OS/2-eComStation users around the world with respect to "modern hardware and support" needs.

How about if all who are in their seats sit back and watch how the Matador (the OS/2 World Foundation) takes on the "Bull" (OS/2's Hardware, Software and Support needs) in the world's arenas.  ;D ;D ;D

You made my point exactly.  How come one needs to go through that many steps just to get a file type to show up!  And there a even more dots in torrent link, divx files, and firefox extensions.
