My eCS 2.0 hopes...

So eCS 2.0 has taken longer then it was suggested to get out the door. Just talking for myself, I am ready to buy it the second it is released. Because it has taken longer I am hoping they wait until Firefox 3.0 comes out so they can package it right with the OS (and thus I don't have to try and download all the other "parts" to get it working.

With this thinking, anyone else have a program they hope gets into eCS 2.0 before release?

I am really hoping eCS 2.0 comes out soon, it has a lot of things I want to use now over 1.2.

OpenOffice 2.x or 3.x, Firefox 3.x, NTFS-3G based NTFS.IFS (or a stable NTFS.ifs read/write driver will be fine).

New IOPROCS, eSchemes (stable).

At this rate of delivery of expectations from the ideal "eCS" - from all appearances... these may arrive five years or more from now.  >:( :( :-[ Maybe, VOYAGER or CASSINI may be better bets.  ;D ::) ;D

(a) A possibility to install from a USB CD.
(b) A possibility to patch the installation by means of a USB device (we are doomed to ATAPI diskettes right now)
(c) A more recent video driver. Most of video cards you can buy now are not supported by SNAP.
(d) A better support for networking. We often see network cards which we cannot make functional.
(e) Better font rendering.

1) An updated Installer that has screenshots and a description of every program that you install, much like the Zeta (BeOS, Haiku, yellowTab) installer
2) An installer that can grab the most recent updates of everything you select to install during the install routine and apply them, saving you reboots after you install.
3) An install routine that takes only one reboot, not mulitples.
4) An installer that comes with more general software on the disk, so that a first-time user can get on their feet immediately. Include some IM software, media playback, etc etc.
5) More wallpapers that are eCS themed. It's a nice touch to have these things come with the OS. Zeta has a ton of great ones included.
6) Include all the great Icon Theme packages that David Graser has made (not the WPS-Wizard ones, the base Icon Theme ones) so that the user can begin to customize immediately.
7) Improve the installer GUI, its a bit outdated, not not exactly friendly.
8 ) Load every Filesystem driver eCS has available during the install routine so that USB flash drives or other drives (NTFS) can be accessed for the CD-KEY file or other drivers that are already downloaded.
9) Improve the NTFS Driver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10) New boot process, thats a nice GUI boot. Someone mentioned on the perfect eComStation forum that it should be a wireframe E-ball that fills up the panels of the wireframe as the boot progress, and I think thats a great idea! It should also be at the native screen resolution/color depth so as to look nicer. Pressing ESC during GUI boot would switch to the normal eCS CMD boot and show you all the screens you really dont need to see ever again after the first succesful boot.
11) Scheduled CHKDSK like Windows, so that you can have eCS run the full JFS check when you tell it to, and not have to keep changing your config.sys manually every time. So when you type chkdsk C: /F:3 in CMD, it should say, "Filesystem is mounted, blah blah, complete check during next reboot?" Yes/No and be done with it.

An interesting post that reminds one of all the OS/2 Pre-Release Seminars that were hosted by IBM during the mid 90's when requests for Operating System features were entertained by IBM's OS/2 Developer Team. It reminds also of these two really cool video clips attached below:

The question is (as could be understood from one of the above videos...): When will eComStation arrive?  ::) ??? ::)

BTW, like quite a few applications of late (including "Windows" which cannot be accused of being all that bad at least for this feature  ;) ) - the integration of an Automatic Update Functionality will be really cool"if" and "when" eComstation arrives! (Let us hope it is not going to be like "Chicago"! ;D ;D ;D

1) A nice GUI package manager that integrates with Hobbes/eComStation Software (ecomstation.it site). This package manager should always be up-to date with the OS/2 software, showing full descriptions and screenshots of each software, and be able to download/install the software automatically. Basically, combine OS2MT with Hobbes/eCo.it and make it very pretty and easy to use.

How about Open Lotus SmartSuite and Lotus SameTime running running on eComStation 2.0 - let us say... about "one year" ago!  :( :o :(

Matter of fact... these (the applications listed in the above quote) should have been available on OS/2 some fifteen (15) - twenty (20) years ago.  :D

What "if" eCS does not arrive on time; or, does not arrive at all!!! Then, what are the alternatives?  ;D ;D ;D

Saijin_Naib

I'd probably hit up Haiku/Zeta/BeOS. I like that OS very much.

However, lets think happy thoughts. Thoughts like the money I could have put toward any other of many needs I have will not be wasted, and eCS 2.0 will in fact arrive, and be awesome.

We are not planning on deploying any other Operating System other than OS/2; or, possibly eComStation and will be playing hard-ball come hell or high water in another few weeks as we roll-out new hardware for our network. The reasons being - we have got Mr. Message and Lotus SmartSuite for OS/2 Warp 4.0; and, they are ready to rock and roll. We've got no more time to be waiting around for eCS et al (We have got our "airplanes" to catch). ;D ;D ;D.

warpcafe

Hi all,

regarding the question "<IF> eCS 2.0 arrives..." I can assure you that it WILL arrive.

Note well, I'm not affiliated or somehow linked to Mensys other than meeting these guys at Warpstock Europes... and from what Roderick told me during last years WSE, they are basically "only" waiting to get a stable, stable, stable version that incorporates the latest bunch of ACPI, GenMac etc. in stable flavors (plus the usual fixes to installer glitches etc.). That was the information dated as of the release of RC3.
What I've read between the lines is that they have plans for eCS in such, that they really don't want to see "idiot bugs" arising... meaning that they most likely will extend the inhouse testing phase before going public.

This is just my impression... and in the meanwhile this might be completely wrong and things have changed...

Cheers,Thomas
