Symptoms

Cannot install PCMCIA modem support for the Gateway 2000 Handbook.

Hardware

Gateway 2000 Handbook

Problem

The Gateway 2000 Handbook is not supported in WARP's PCMCIA Plug-n-Play.

Procedure

1. The PCMCIA chipset in the Handbook is Cirrus Logic, so you can install PCMCIA support (Selective Install) using either the Matsushita or Compaq Concerto drivers. The PCMCIA device drivers will be added to your config.sys file.

2. The serial port on the Handbook is com2, so the PCMCIA modem supposedly needs to be configured as COM3, IRQ5 (at least this is how Gateway configures it under DOS). In order to make the PCMCIA configuration manager assign the modem as COM3, IRQ5, you need to explicitly define the normal com addresses and IRQs in the COM.SYS statement in your config.sys. Edit the COM.SYS statement, and change the s0 switch on the Matsushita or Compaq driver (Matsushita shown) to 1 from 2. The relevant section of my config.sys is reproduced below.

DEVICE=D:\OS2\MDOS\VMOUSE.SYS
DEVICE=D:\OS2\BOOT\POINTDD.SYS
DEVICE=D:\OS2\BOOT\MOUSE.SYS
CODEPAGE=437,850
DEVINFO=KBD,US,D:\OS2\KEYBOARD.DCP
REM ** PCMCIA SECTION BEGINS **
BASEDEV=PCMCIA.SYS
DEVICE=D:\OS2\MDOS\VPCMCIA.SYS
DEVICE=D:\OS2\BOOT\COM.SYS (1,03F8,4) (2,02F8,3)
DEVICE=D:\OS2\MDOS\VCOM.SYS
DEVICE=D:\OS2\BOOT\AUTODRV2.SYS D:\OS2\AUTODRV2.INI
BASEDEV=IBM2MAT1.SYS /S0=1
REM ** PCMCIA ENDS **
DEVINFO=SCR,VGA,D:\OS2\BOOT\VIOTBL.DCP

3. You need to edit the autodrv2.ini file in your OS2 directory to assign the correct IRQ, so fire up your editor before you reboot. The relevant section of the autodrv2.ini is reproduced below. Note the IRQ change at the com3 address:

; Port1     :
; IRQ       : Interrupt Level

;* Port1=3F8,2F8,3E8,2E8,3220,3228,4220,4228,5220,5228
;* IRQ=4,3

Port1=3F8,IRQ=4
Port1=2F8,IRQ=3
Port1=3E8,IRQ=5
;Port1=2E8,IRQ=3

[SDLC]

4. Reboot with the PCMCIA modem in place. You should hear a beep during the boot process. Open the PCMCIA configuration manager. The modem should indicate READY, and if you click on its icon, you should see that it is configured as COM3, IRQ5. The configuration manager should recognize if you remove and re-insert the modem.

Notes

A similar procedure should work for the Gateway 2000 Colorbook as well; if anyone tries it and meets with success, please let me know. I would also be interested if anyone finds a more elegant way to do this installation.
