WebExtra Overdrive

Innoval's utility brings new power to the OS/2 internet.

by Ken Willard

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine told me about this really great site for WebExplorer animations. I took a look, but didn't really have time to download any of them. A couple of days later I had no idea where the site was or where the piece of paper was that I had scribbled down the URL.

That won't be a problem for me in the future, I'm now running InnoVal's WebExtra. WebExtra enhances the WebExplorer in several ways, not the least of which is a "persistent jump list." This jump list allows you to return to any page you've ever visited. The list is consistent from session to session, unlike the WebExplorer's built-in WebMap.

You may be putting all this together and thinking, "What am I going to do with six month's worth of jumplist?" Great question. WebExtra keeps the last forty sites in the jump list, while appending ALL sites to the monthly log. And since a log containing several hundred site entries isn't very useful alone, there is a high-speed search facility to help you find a URL.

WebExtra also provides bookmarks by category. After creating any number of categories, you can bookmark pages into the correct category or "book". You can edit the entries and descriptions, update the URLs, and move and copy references between categories.

While this sounds like the best thing since sliced bread, I'd like to see a hot-spot that brings WebExtra to focus or a "float on top" function. I'd like to be able to make WebExtra frameless and not have a title bar. This would create a "floating toolbar" for the WebExplorer and make up for it's lack of customization.

It would also be nice to be able to see my bookmarks by category available via cascading menus.

Whether or not InnoVal likes my suggestions, if you spend any time surfing WebExtra is a great tool. You can get more information and find out how to order at http://www.innoval.com.

By the way, that WebExplorer animations site is the Animations Contest at http://www.os2forum.or.at/TeamOS2/English/Special/Animations/Contest/. VERY neat stuff there - check it out!
