This was the first release of IBM OS/2 under the partnership with Microsoft. It was marketed as the 'platform for the '90s'. OS/2 1.0 was a 16-bit OS and did not include a GUI on this release.  It was initially announced on April 2nd, 1987 and its estimated shipping date was the first quarter of 1988, but it was actually released early in December 1987.
