New York, NY - May 16, 1989 - Microsoft Corporation today announced a commitment to develop applications software that is integrated with the newly announced IBM® OfficeVision/2. At the IBM announcement in New York today, Microsoft previewed a future version of the popular Microsoft® Excel spreadsheet running under OS/2 Version 1.20.
"Microsoft Excel is the first application product from Microsoft that will exploit the benefits of OS/2 1.10 and 1.20. Over time, we will introduce a complete line of applications with the graphical user interface of Presentation Manager," said Mike Maples, Microsoft vice president of applications. "Users want a consistent interface across all of the applications they use, and compliance with SAA will provide that."
Microsoft Excel is the leading spreadsheet for graphical environments. Versions for Microsoft Windows and the Apple® Macintosh are available now, and a version for OS/2 1.10 and 1.20 will be released later this year. Microsoft Excel incorporates powerful analytical tools with tools for manipulation of data and presentation of numerically oriented data.
Today Microsoft demonstrated how Microsoft Excel can act as both a user and supplier of information to IBM OfficeVision/2. Using a custom dialog box created in Microsoft Excel's powerful macro language, a customer can send an order in the OfficeVision/2 mail facility to another workstation, where a second copy of Microsoft Excel can receive the order, create a pick list, update the inventory database and use OfficeVision/2 to send a confirmation. This type of integration is possible because Microsoft Excel takes advantage of the services of OfficeVision/2 and benefits of the IBM Personal System/2® using OS/2 Extended Edition.
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ "MSFT") develops, markets and supports a wide range of software for business and professional use, including operating systems, languages and application programs as well as books, CD-ROM products and hardware for the microcomputer marketplace.
