This was the first release of IBM OS/2 under the partnership with Microsoft. It was marketed as the 'platform for the '90s'. OS/2 1.0 was 16-bit OS and did not included a GUI on this release. It was initially announced on April 2nd, 1987 and its estimated shipping date was the first quarter of 1988, but it was actually released early on December of 1987.

- 16-bit multi-tasking protected-mode operating system with pre-emptive scheduling, multi-threading, dynamic linking, and virtual memory.
- Memory protection capabilities.
- Supports up to 16MB RAM.
- OS/2 development API.
- FAT file system support.
- Supported shared memory, pipes, queues, semaphores, and signals.
Version 1.0 was text mode only without Presentation Manager (GUI).

IBM Operating System/2 Extended Edition Version 1.0 (OS/2 EE 1.0) provides the capabilities of OS/2 Standard Edition Version 1.0, and adds relational Database and Communications Managers into a single product package.
