IBMer's can get the package by entering the following command:

TOOLCAT MKTTOOLS GET OS2NL PACKAGE

Customers may be able to obtain this document from various on-line information sources such as America OnLine, Compuserve, DELPHI, GENIE, OS2BBS, PRODIGY, and INTERNET. Check under the general OS/2 BBS categories available under these services. The document package will be identified as OS2NL. This month's issue of the OS2NL document will be contained in a file called OS2NL894.zip, which must be down-loaded to a PC for printing or viewing on-line. After being down-loaded, this file must be "unzipped." This will create three files, providing three different formats for this document: an .INF format for viewing with the OS/2 VIEW command, an ASCII format for viewing with any text editor, and a Postscript format for direct printing to a Postscript printer.

IBM TO RELEASE "WARP" BETA 2

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 9, 1994 ... IBM today announced that its second beta release for the next version of OS/2*, code-named "Warp," will be available next week. The second beta release offers more productivity enhancing features and a BonusPak with applications in a fast, fun, and easy-to-use environment. The first beta cycle tested performance enhancements and IBM's new PlayAtWill capability.

Designed for business, mobile and home PC users, Warp Beta 2 combines the maturity of the OS/2 32-bit operating environment with new features for mobility and quick productivity, such as simplified installation, reduced memory requirements, a floating tool bar, animated icons and a more responsive user interface.

The Warp Beta 2 comes with an applications "BonusPak." The BonusPak includes a suite of productivity applications, including IBM's Person-to-Person real-time conferencing software, and integrated access to online services. IBM is making Warp Beta 2 widely available to users who want to subscribe by ordering from IBM's 800 number or by downloading the software from CompuServe as soon as the code is available some time next week.

"Warp is loaded with value and is a high performer on notebook PCs, which will broaden OS/2's market appeal to mobile corporate users, small businesses and home offices," said Wally Casey, director of marketing, IBM Personal Software Products division. "With Warp, Windows users will be more productive and current OS/2 users will love the speed and usability improvements."

Customer-Driven Usability

Warp Beta 2 features numerous usability enhancements, including:

  • Easy Installation: At set-up, users select "easy install" and OS/2 automatically handles the complete installation, identifying the hardware and configuring it to meet specifications. Experienced users can select an advanced install that provides customization ability.
  • New Look & Feel: In Beta 2, the user interface, or OS/2 Workplace Shell, features new colorful animated 3-D icons. For example, an animated folder icon confirms visually the status of a folder. When a user opens a folder, the icon opens to show it's active. Updated color and scheme palettes allow users to customize their desktops.
  • OS/2 LaunchPad: Incorporating the principles of a floating tool bar, "LaunchPad" provides users with single-click access to the applications, folders, printers or other objects they use most.
  • Improved Usability: A new, graphical tutorial designed for new or advanced users makes it easier than ever to learn OS/2's capabilities. A new comet cursor was created for mobile users. It leaves a "comet" trail, making it easy to track cursor movement, particularly on LCD screens. More pointer sets allow for cursor enlargement, choice of styles and color selection. Other significant improvements have been made in screen response time, command and window processing and application load time already featured in Beta 1.
  • PlayAtWill: A new PCMCIA software utility, called PlayAtWill*, provides plug-and-play capabilities today. The utility automatically identifies the type of PCMCIA cards installed, including communications, modem, memory, hard disk and I/O cards, and provides a convenient graphical status on the desktop.

BonusPak Applications

The Person-to-Person capabilities in the BonusPak include whiteboard data sharing, with multi-user annotation so that up to eight people can share images, text, graphics and application window contents in real time, using different protocols.

The new OS/2 version will support Windows ** 3.1, Windows 3.11 and Windows for Workgroups** 3.x base function on Intel 386 and later machines. The code will be available some time next week. Two new AnyNet (TM) products expand the AnyNet family of solutions that can help with adding new applications and simplify multiprotocol networks.

AnyNet/2 Version 2.0 delivers support for additional SNA logical unit (LU) types including emulators and printers over TCP/IP networks. AnyNet/2 Version 2.0 reduces the number of SNA resources required by using full duplex, when available, and provides OS/2 (R) DCE support when running Sockets applications over SNA networks. AnyNet/2 NetBEUI over SNA is a new AnyNet product family member providing NetBIOS application connectivity across SNA networks without any application changes.

AnyNet/2 delivers multiprotocol transport networking (MPTN) architecture support for OS/2 workstation to workstation and workstation to VTAM (R) host communications. Applications can be written or acquired without concern for the underlying network transport protocol.

AnyNet/2 Version 2.0

  • SNA over TCP/IP -- adds all LU types (LU 0, 1, 2, 3, and 6.2) to provide total SNA connectivity across TCP/IP networks including terminals and printers
  • Sockets over SNA -- adds full duplex support to allow improved use of SNA networking resources and adds DCE support

AnyNet/2 NetBEUI over SNA Version 1.0

  • Allows SNA networks to add NetBIOS applications without adding a separate NetBIOS network. This also extends the use of existing SNA networks to include NetBIOS application traffic without requiring additional router or gateway equipment.

Together, these AnyNet functions can help organizations:

  • Broaden end users' access to applications and reduce the cost and effort usually required to achieve this connectivity
  • Reduce the number of physical and logical networks required, thereby simplifying the network and reducing maintenance costs
  • Improve application programmers' productivity by allowing programmers to focus on new applications without requirements to accommodate new or multiple protocols
  • Protect investment in existing and future applications through application independence from the transport layer

ANYNET/2 SOCKETS OVER SNA GATEWAY VERSION 1.1

June 21, 1994

The AnyNet (TM)/2 Sockets over SNA Gateway Version 1.1 delivers a set of three gateway sizes. The low-priced entry size meets the needs of small, remote offices by providing 20 concurrent connections. The 100- and 250-connection gateways support the requirements of medium and large networks.

You can change the size of AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway by simply using a password; you don't have to reinstall or reconfigure anything. These options are separately priced to provide the most cost-effective gateway solution to your multiple protocol networks.

The AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway, in conjunction with AnyNet/2 and AnyNet/MVS software, connects SNA and TCP/IP networks to allow sockets applications data to flow freely across both environments. Your workstation and hosts in SNA networks can now run sockets applications and appear to be directly connected to your TCP/IP network. In addition, dual AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateways can be used to connect TCP/IP networks across a SNA network. All of the connections are made with no changes to your sockets applications, TCP/IP network, or SNA network.

IBM BOOKMANAGER READ FOR WINDOWS VERSION 2.0

June 28, 1994

BookManager (R) READ for Windows Version 2.0 enhances user productivity
by taking advantage of personal computer technology to provide rapid
search, retrieval, and viewing of online information in a Microsoft**
Windows (1) Version 3.1 environment. The book metaphor gives users an
intuitive and comfortable means of navigation -- table of contents,
index, figure list, search results, note list, and so forth, much like
those found in a conventional printed book, but augmented with
hypertext linking. The critical function of locating information is
handled by BookManager's patented linguistics-based search engine.
Several advanced functions of BookManager READ for Windows require an
enabled BookManager BUILD product to support them. See the Statement
  of Direction for details.
READ for Windows external user interface is designed to optimize user
efficiency in the Windows environment. An icon bar provides a fastpath
to commonly used functions. To enable the user to view or search a
book while viewing or working with another application on the screen at
the same time, text is reflowed automatically when the window is
resized. Proportional fonts are supported to make text and headings
  easier to read.
READ for Windows provides hypertext links to information through
user-selectable cross-references found in the book text, tables of
contents, indices, table lists, figure lists, or glossaries (provided
the author created links to related information during the build
process). Cross-book linking requires that linked books be included in
the same bookshelf. Additionally, function is provided to launch
author-defined applications from within a book (for example,
  multimedia).
READ for Windows contains several powerful search functions. Users can
exercise control over the type of search logic applied by specifying
exact, Boolean, or "fuzzy" search. Full wild-card search is supported,
enabling users to more easily find information without specifying the
full "search string" argument. Boolean-logic searching is provided,
with logic operators such as "and", "or", and "not" giving the user
greater precision in search results. Users can search specific parts
of a book or bookshelf by utilizing focused searching. Users can also
tailor the order in which search results are presented.
READ for Windows utilizes Microsoft Windows Version 3.1 print drivers
to facilitate the printing of notes, topic text with notes, pictures,
marked text, a range of topics, or an entire book.
Graphics, including high quality color images, can be integrated with
  text on the screen.
First customer shipment will be by August 12, 1994, to an already
selected set of customers. These customers will participate in a
program designed to validate that IBM has achieved the quality
objectives for READ for Windows 2.0 in a variety of production
environments. When these customers confirm that IBM has achieved its
quality objectives, IBM will announce general availability and ordering
  information.
Planned Availability Date: To be announced at a later date.

IBM DELIVERS MORE PC POWER WITH OS/2 FOR SYMMETRICAL MULTIPROCESSING

NEW YORK, June 28, 1994...IBM today introduced OS/2* for Symmetrical
Multiprocessing Version 2.11, a new member of its award-winning 32-bit
PC operating system family. OS/2 for SMP provides performance and
client/server benefits to users of Intel 486 and Pentium multiprocessor
systems while protecting their software investments in applications.
OS/2 for SMP offers all the features of OS/2 2.11 and increases
performance by distributing application processes or threads among
processors to optimize the capabilities of a multiprocessor computer.
              Industry Standard, Supported by OEMs
OS/2 for SMP will be available this summer. Several computer vendors
announced support today for OS/2 for SMP, including Advanced Logic
Research, AST Research, Compaq Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM,
Intel, Tricord Systems, VTech, and Wyse Technology. OS/2 for SMP will
also be available on future IBM PC-based multiprocessing servers. OS/2
for SMP is consistent with the industry standard Multiprocessor
Specification Version 1.1, which means that multiprocessor computers
built on this specification can run OS/2 for SMP without changes to the
BIOS, operating system or hardware interfaces.
OS/2 for SMP features transparent support of systems with two or more
CPUs, increasing raw computing power with a lower memory requirement
than any other SMP operating system available today.
For multiprocessing-enabled applications, customers will see substantial
performance gains with each new processor added to their systems. OS/2
for SMP can support up to 16 processors on a single system.
Cost-conscious organizations that want to expand their network resources
can reconfigure server systems to handle larger and larger networks, or
consolidate the functions of their uniprocessor servers on a single
multiprocessor system running OS/2 for SMP.
"OS/2 for SMP optimizes Intel-based hardware for enterprise-wide,
scalable, mission critical applications," said Kevin Dugan, manager of
systems development at the network management center of Cable & Wireless
Inc., a $600 million long-distance telephone company based in Vienna,
 Va.
"It is absolutely critical for businesses such as ours because we want
to make sure that our systems and software will be able to grow with us
as our business needs grow," continued Dugan. "With OS/2 for SMP's
scalable performance, we can keep the same operating system and
applications as we migrate from desktop workstations to multiprocessor
systems. The end result is a substantial savings for us."
         Ideal Technology for Client/Server Environments
Network server and high-end desktop workstation environments will
benefit from OS/2 for SMP's scalable performance. Transaction
processing and relational database applications on servers as well as
compute-intensive applications such as CAD/CAM, forecasting, modeling or
simulation programs on workstations will run faster and more efficiently
on OS/2 for SMP. For example, when OS/2 for SMP and IBM's relational
database manager, DB2/2* Version 1.2, are installed on parallel hardware
systems, performance and scalability are significantly improved. Users
may expect some query workloads to scale as high as 1.8 to 1.9 on a
dual-processor machine. Applications such as Lotus 1-2-3** for OS/2 run
faster with the new OS/2 for SMP, which also is supported by networking
platforms such as IBM's OS/2 LAN Server 3.01.
"Only OS/2 scales the range of computing power, from small notebooks to
high-end SMP-enabled computers," said Dan Lautenbach, general manager
for IBM's Personal Software Products division. "We've created OS/2 for
SMP for the high-end server market where exceptional performance and
mission critical reliability are important. Whether an organization
adds more microprocessors to its computers or just wants to make the
most of its current multiprocessor system, users will see a quantifiable
performance boost with OS/2 for SMP."
                  Measurable Performance Gains
OS/2 for SMP intelligently supervises computing operations and allocates
processing resources as necessary, improving processing capabilities.
Application processes or threads are automatically dispatched to run on
any of the available system processors. The end result is enhanced
 performance through a load-balanced system.
Users can run multiple DOS, Windows** and OS/2 2.1 applications
concurrently on a single system and benefit from performance gains.
OS/2 for SMP is compatible with existing OS/2 and DOS/Windows
applications. Even single-tasking DOS applications benefit, because
OS/2's heavy use of threads allows overlap of systems services and
application execution. Because multiple processors are dispatched,
multiple DOS/Windows virtual machines can run faster with no
modification. Native OS/2 applications will exploit OS/2's
multithreading capabilities, providing even higher performance gains.
In addition, OS/2 for SMP supports applications designed for
 uniprocessor computers.
Power and Performance Available This Summer
OS/2 for SMP will be available this summer. It will be supported on
hardware from Advanced Logic Research, AST Research, Compaq Computer
Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM, Tricord Systems, VTech, and Wyse
Technology. It is initially available in a U.S. English version only.
For customers with a supported SMP-enabled computer, OS/2 for SMP can be
ordered in July by calling 800-3IBM-OS2, (800-342-6672), in the U.S. or
through local dealers and distributors in other countries. Suggested
retail prices are: $395 for the 1-2 processor version, $595 for the 1-7
processor version, and $795 for the 1-16 processor version.

IBM OFFERS ADVANCED TOOLS FOR PLANT FLOOR MONITOR

 SOMERS, N.Y., July 12, 1994 ... IBM today announced PlantWorks* 2.2, a
new release of its fully distributed client/server application
development and processing environment for supervisory control and data
 acquisition (SCADA).
PlantWorks 2.2 takes full advantage of the increased performance of the
OS/2* 32-bit architecture. Major enhancements include a better
graphical user interface (GUI), increased systems openness, faster
input/output (I/O), improved security, and easier installation and
 maintenance.
"PlantWorks 2.2 has been enhanced to better meet our customers' demand
for tools to develop more complex client/server applications in today's
integrated production and process control environments. The new version
provides a broad range of logic and data manipulation capabilities,
allowing just about any SCADA application of any size to be tackled
within its framework," according to J. Ronald Steiger, Jr., general
manager, ALTIUM, a wholly-owned IBM subsidiary which develops and
markets this product, as well as other solutions for the computer-aided
design (CAD), engineering, manufacturing and process industries.
 PlantWorks 2.2 provides a fully-managed software development
environment. Version management and "check-in/check-out" are controlled
by PlantWorks, allowing concurrent application development and
plant-wide electronic distribution and installation of all SCADA
software enhancements. When programming is required, PlantWorks is
fully extendible. Additionally, C-code objects can be incorporated in
PlantWorks' chain functions and distributed over a client/server network
and managed exactly as if they were PlantWorks objects.

                     Graphical User Interface
A new optimized Presentation Manager* display paint method offers
smooth, non-blinking display refresh, greatly enhancing the look of
PlantWorks' display animation. Enhanced display paint and repaint
 algorithms improve performance.
PlantWorks 2.2's open graphics environment allows graphics to be created
in PlantWorks or imported from external graphics packages or bit-mapped
graphics. Users can even capture portions of previously developed SCADA
interfaces and use them in PlantWorks.
Four new OS/2 fonts are now supported by PlantWorks 2.2. The fonts --
Helvetica, Courier, New-Times Roman and Symbols -- are all bold and
 scalable.
PlantWorks' display definition grid and alignment functions have also
been enhanced to support "snap-to-grid" alignment with a variety of
options. The reference point for each item is selectable, allowing
complete control of the selected group for vertical, horizontal or
 centering object alignment.

                             Openness
Ten new chain functions have been added to PlantWorks 2.2 to implement
full OS/2 and DB2* SQL database support and, with the necessary support
software, to provide transparent access to other DB2 platforms.
Optional Oracle interface is now available.
Expanded functionality includes multi-threaded, multi-session support
enabling several databases to be accessed concurrently by the same
PlantWorks application. Both static and dynamic queries are supported,
and these queries are only limited by the 64K address space.

                           Input/Output
The I/O speed of PlantWorks 2.2 has increased 10 times (to a 0.1 second
polling rate) over previous versions. The dynamic control of device
polling and polling rates also will allow PlantWorks users to design
applications that are more flexible and responsive to the actual plant
environment by increasing device sampling rates during critical periods
and decreasing or disabling polling for non-critical periods.

                             Security
Read and write security now is supported for each display and node. A
user is assigned a specified security level at logon, and the security
level for each node can be assigned before the user has logged on.
Security events are logged into the Event Log creating a security trail
in the log file and enabling a supervisor to review security violations.
A user-definable option is provided to create redundant logs for both
the Event and Warning log files, and these can be directed across the
 network to other PlantWorks nodes.

                       Ease of Installation
The PlantWorks Installation and Configuration Service has been updated
to make it simpler and more flexible to use. The Service has been
enhanced to include list boxes, node status information, and
product-specific selection information to simplify and clarify the user
interface. Additionally, Distributed Application Environment* (DAE*) is
now embedded in PlantWorks 2.2 for easier installation. DAE is a set of
tools for building and running distributed applications in a
 multi-platform network.

IBM OFFERS SIMPLIFIED, ENHANCED LAN SERVER 4.0 BETA

AUSTIN, Texas, June 21, 1994 . . . IBM today announced the release of a
beta testing program for LAN Server 4.0, the next version of its
powerful multi-platform network operating system. IBM also extended
support for LAN Server 3.0 products through December 1995.
The beta versions of LAN Server 4.0 Advanced and LAN Server 4.0 Entry
will be available to customers, resellers and developers in mid-July.
The new products address key customer needs with simplified installation
and configuration, enhanced usability and administration, and improved
reference publications. Chief among the new features is a graphical
 user interface.
"LAN Server is simply the best LAN operating system you can buy," said
Phil Powers, director of marketing, LAN Systems, IBM Personal Software
Products division. "With the new version, we want to help our customers
maximize productivity by reducing the time they spend installing and
administering their LANs. LAN Server 4.0 will provide significant
 usability and performance enhancements."
Several usability enhancements make LAN Server 4.0 even more attractive
to small businesses or departments which will be able to install and use
their systems quickly. Larger customers will enjoy additional
automation features along with the new, easy-to-use graphical user
 interface.
The object-oriented, drag-and-drop GUI enables administrators to easily
set up users, groups and associated resources. The beta also features a
GUI for the DOS requester, which gives users an alternative to the
command line for using server resources or managing passwords. The DOS
requester leaves more than 610 KB of memory free for customer
applications. Users can perform all functions from the command line,
the GUI, or the 32-bit network API.
By using predefined defaults and automatic adapter identification, the
LAN Server 4.0 beta installation requires fewer steps. Users also can
fine-tune and customize the product after it is installed.
The documentation has been abridged and simplified to provide systems
administrators with answers to at least 80 percent of the questions or
problems likely to be encountered during the first 30 days of use.
Improved TCP/IP support in this version provides a 200 percent
performance boost, and the TCP/IP stacks and TCP/beui are now bundled
 with LAN Server.
In addition to the features mentioned above, which are common to both
Advanced and Entry versions, LAN Server Advanced also will offer
capacity improvements which enhance performance when LAN Server is
running its maximum of 1,000 clients.
An additional Advanced version feature, "enforced disk space limits,"
provides better management capability by letting system administrators
allocate specific amounts of disk space to end users and to limit space
by user. This version also offers Pentium optimization for better
 performance.
Migration from LAN Server 4.0 Entry to the Advanced version is as simple
as loading the Advanced version. User and resource definitions are
 compatible.
"As a business grows, LAN Server will grow with it," said Powers.
Customers wishing to participate in the beta should call (800) 393-8922
in the U.S. or (800) 561-5293 in Canada. For information on ordering
the beta in other countries, contact the local IBM marketing
 representative.
To demonstrate its continuing commitment to LAN Server 3.0 and to
providing quality support, IBM is extending until Dec. 31, 1995, the
LAN Server 3.0 and LAN Server for Macintosh service period.
"This will allow our customers to migrate to LAN Server 4.0 on their
 schedules not ours," said Powers.
                 Upgrade, Promotional Packages Offered
IBM also announced LAN Server 3.0 purchase incentives both for new and
existing LAN Server customers. From June 28 until LAN Server 4.0 is
available, customers who purchase Version 3.0 can upgrade to Version 4.0
for half the normal upgrade price.
Through Oct. 28, customers also can buy a LAN Server 3.0 package which
includes 12 clients for $900, the price of the clients alone. An
Advanced version gives customers LAN Server 3.0 Advanced plus 35 clients
for $2,625, the price of the clients alone. Dealer prices may vary.
Both packages come with the LAN Server 4.0 upgrade discount.

DB2/2 OFFERS INCREASED SCALABILITY WITH SMP SUPPORT

NEW YORK, June 28, 1994 . . . To help customers reap the benefits of
parallel technology, IBM today announced that the latest release of
 DATABASE 2* OS/2*, DB2/2* Version 1.2, now supports OS/2 for Symmetrical
Multiprocessing Version 2.11 (OS/2 for SMP). This extends DB2/2's
ability as a high-powered server supporting many users in a workgroup.
When DB2/2 V1.2 and OS/2 for SMP are installed on parallel hardware
systems, users can achieve significant improvements in performance and
scalability. Users may expect query workloads to scale as high as 1.8
to 1.9 on a dual processor machine.
These changes will also benefit DB2/2 V1.2 workloads running on non-SMP
systems. With these enhancements, users could expect to see a
performance improvement of up to 40 percent over DB2/2 V1.1, depending
on workload and other factors, in high contention situations.
"As the complexity of managing data increases, IBM is committed to
providing customers with scalable solutions that offer high performance
and immediate data access," said Janet Perna, director of database
technology, IBM Software Solutions. "With DB2/2 and OS/2 for SMP, we
are able to fulfill that commitment."
               DB2/2 Version 1.2, DDCS/2 Version 2.2
IBM last month announced new releases of DB2/2 and Distributed Database
 Connection Services/2* (DDCS/2*). DB2/2 V1.2 and DDCS/2 V2.2 protect
customers' investments in their information systems by offering enhanced
integration with Novell NetWare** LANs, support for Windows***
applications using Microsoft's ODBC interface, new functions which
enhance compatibility between DB2/2 and DB2 (MVS), and flexible pricing
options which offer a lower entry price for DB2/2 client/server
 applications.
DB2/2 V1.2 provides enhanced integration with Novell NetWare LANs by
offering support for the Novell IPX/SPX communications protocol. This
allows DOS, Windows, and OS/2 workstations on a Novell NetWare LAN to be
used as clients to DB2/2 servers and through DDCS/2 as clients to DB2
host-based servers without requiring any additional communication
products to be installed or configured.
An enhanced ODBC driver is included with the new DB2 client for Windows.
IBM's DB2 ODBC driver provides popular Windows applications with access
 to enterprise data.
                     DB2/2, DB2/6000 Version 2
IBM last month also unveiled plans for Version 2 of DB2/2 and DATABASE 2
 AIX/6000* (DB2/6000*), two client/server relational database management
 systems.
The new versions will offer enhanced function and performance to take
advantage of extended relational capabilities, an industry-leading SQL
optimizer, large database support, and access to DB2/2 and DB2/6000 data
 from host applications.
DB2/2 V2 will contain additional performance enhancements to further
exploit the power of OS/2 for SMP and the SMP hardware platforms that it
supports. The combination of DB2/2 and OS/2 for SMP will continue to
provide customers with scalable performance, enabling them to further
extend their investments in database applications.
                       Prices, Availability
IBM has changed the pricing structure of DB2/2 V1.2 and DDCS/2 V2.2 to
provide a lower cost entry for DB2/2 LAN-based and host-based
client/server applications with scalable pricing for larger systems and
future growth. Prices are based on the number of concurrent users that
are accessing the database server and host-based servers respectively.
DB2/2 V1.2 and DDCS/2 V2.2 will be generally available on June 30. The
 single-user list CD price for DB2/2 V1.2 is $425; client/server list CD
price for DB2/2 V1.2 with four users is $1995.
DB2/2 and DB2/6000 Version 2 will be made available to customers in
 October through a beta program.
IBM's Software Solutions Division provides data management, application
development and workgroup software for mission-critical applications on

 EXPERMEDIA/2 CUSTOM MULTIMEDIA KNOWLEDGE-BASED APPLICATION
 __________________________________________________________

 July 28, 1994
Do your customers want to empower their workforce?
 If so, EXPERMEDIA/2 (EM/2) custom multimedia knowledge-based
applications may be the answer. EM/2 enables workers to have full
responsibility for their operation by providing a full set of training
documents, including figures and pictures, along with problem-solving
diagnostics and data access. All this is in one easy to use, OS/2*
 based package.
EM/2 was developed and has been deployed for just that purpose in IBM's
Burlington, VT manufacturing facility. Want to read about it or let
your customer read about it? See your May 1994 issue of Manufacturing
Systems or call the number at the end of this notice for a reprint of
 the article.
EM/2 uses hypertext and hypergraphics to provide powerful access to
information. Simply clicking on words or phrases in a document will
bring up additional text and graphics, including full color animation,
on that subject. Clicking on objects in photos or figures will bring up
additional text and graphical information describing the object.
The worker is assisted in problem solving either on the equipment or the
product by an integrated decision tree diagnostic module, and by access
to a database of past solutions to similar problems. EM/2 will even
test and record the level of achievement of the worker with an
 integrated certification module.
The modular object-oriented architecture of the system lends itself to
flexibility in application design and modification. Additional modules
can be added to the system as your customers organization expands and
their needs grow. The entire system resides on the fixed disk, avoiding
the high costs and inflexibilities of read only storage media.

EZRAID "LITE" FOR OS/2

July 21, 1994

PRO Engineering Announces: EZRAID "Lite" for OS/2 Disk Management
 Software for OS/2 Desktop Systems
OTTAWA, July 1, 1994--- PRO Engineering the recent startup founded by
former Corel lead developer, Daniel Levesque, announced today EZRAID
Lite for OS/2, a software-based disk management solution for the OS/2
desktop market. For users of OS/2 2.x and OS/2 for Windows, EZRAID Lite
has a suggested retail price of only $195 and will be generally
 available on August 1st, 1994.
EZRAID Lite brings the benefits of RAID technology to the desktop level
at a breakthrough price point. Offering disk mirroring, data striping
and disk spanning, EZRAID Lite creates disk arrays with unparalleled
ease and flexibility. The software supports all disk interfaces
 including IDE, ESDI and SCSI.
"Now any OS/2 user can combine two standard hard disks and take
advantage of the fault-tolerance, complete data reliability and the
increased storage capacity offered with RAID technology," said PRO
Engineering president Daniel Levesque. He adds, "With OS/2 for Windows
now available world-wide, any DOS or Windows application will benefit
from the advanced disk management features found in EZRAID Lite."
For simplified data management EZRAID Lite is able to strip or span data
across any two hard disks creating a single large logical drive. And
with the software's ability to mirror existing logical drives without
the need to reformat, EZRAID Lite provides real-time backups of all user
files. ºImplemented as a logical disk device driver, EZRAID Lite
controls RAIDs at the partition level. This unique approach allows RAID
logical drives to co-exist with existing partitions on hard disks. In
addition any combination of mirroring, striping and spanning can be used
on the same set of physical disk drives.
As the world's first desktop RAID product, EZRAID Lite is a personal
version of EZRAID for OS/2, a product that supports RAID levels 0, 1, 4
and 5 and retails for $795. The product is PRO Engineering's latest
addition to their growing family of software based RAID solutions.

BPR TOOL FEATURES REPOSITORY-BASED GRAPHICS

July 1, 1994

 M. Bryce & Associates, Inc. (MBA) has issued Release 1.2 of its "PRIDE"
INFORMATION FACTORY, an OS/2 based product for managing information
resources and Business Process Re-Engineering (BPR). Included is a new
Graphics Facility providing input/output access to the FACTORY's IRM
Repository. As analysts and designers draw diagrams and flowcharts,
information resources and relationships are automatically recorded in
the repository for use by other developers. This approach promotes
system integration by sharing and re-using information resources
throughout the enterprise. Further, the IRM Repository includes an
import/export facility allowing information resources to be used and
manipulated by other FACTORY utilities, as well as third party packages
(e.g., CASE tools, spreadsheets, DBMS, and other
 dictionaries/repositories).
The Graphics Facility supports a three tiered flowcharting scheme
allowing analysts to decompose the structure of an information system
from overall System Architecture, to Business Process Flows, to Job
Stream Design. Flowcharts use ANSI symbols and include standard
templates to quickly draw diagrams. Inputs, outputs, and files are also
drawn on the flowcharts, along with vital timing elements for
processing. Analysts can click on any object on the flowchart and
compose text to describe the object using normal text editing functions.
Also included with the Graphics Facility are Hierarchy Charts, Indented
Lists, Business Function Charts, Organization Charts, and Matrices, all
of which interact directly with the IRM Repository. Printed copies of
all graphics require a PostScript supported printer. Facilities are
also provided to copy graphics to the OS/2 Clipboard for use by other
 graphics and groupware packages.
Release 1.2 also includes a Computer Aided Design (CAD) tool to
automatically design and document enterprise-wide systems, complete with
business process flows, and software engineering specifications. Based
on output specifications supplied by the user, CAD will automatically
design an integrated system solution. CAD references the IRM Repository
to seek-out existing information resources that can be re-used in the
new system, thereby eliminating redundancy and promoting system
integration. CAD is also suitable for documenting existing systems.
Under OS/2, a user can execute CAD in one session and view the resulting
flowcharts in another. This is a powerful tool for Business Process
Re-Engineering (BPR) and complements a CASE environment using other
 application development aids.
 SPECIFICATIONS
MBA's "PRIDE" INFORMATION FACTORY is operational either in a stand-alone
environment, or in a client/server LAN environment. The FACTORY
 requires a 486 based machine (or higher) running OS/2 2.1. A site
license is priced at $148K and includes training. The product includes
MBA's methodologies for Enterprise Engineering, Information Systems
Engineering, and Data Base Engineering, along with a supporting Project
Management system. The FACTORY is translatable and supports DBCS
 technology (Double Byte Character Set).

user the ability to transfer objects across the network.
DSOM is the underlying object base of IBM's future framework OpenDoc
OpenDoc is designed to run software across multiple operating systems
from Macintosh to Windows to OS/2 to Unix. OpenDoc is an industry
standard endorsed by Lotus, Apple, Borland, IBM, Novell, WordPerfect,
 Oracle, Taligent and Xerox.
 Fax/PM is a 32-bit, multi-threaded, multi-tasking send and receive fax
software package that is completely object architected. For example,
each entry in the phonebook is an object. All of the information
pertaining to the entry such as name, fax number, phone number, address,
etc. are stored in a notebook and can be accessed by opening the
object's settings. The object architected design also applies to
distribution lists, fax jobs, E-Mail, modem drivers, LAN users, etc.
LAN independent, Fax/PM runs on Lan Server, Novell, TCP/IP. It will
also work without a LAN by utilizing NetBios as the transport layer.
 The features include:  Native printer drivers for OS/2 and Win-OS/2;
supports all system fonts (including true type) and graphics; supports
Class 1 and Class 2 modems; multiple, user definable channels; multiple
phone lines in both send and/or receive mode; workgroup and private
phonebooks; E-mail; file transfer; and restart check point. (When there
is a problem in a fax transmission Fax/PM resumes transmission from
 point of failure.)
Jean-Jacques Fouchet, President of Microformatic S.A. (Paris, France)
says, "We are very excited to see the direction taken by IBM in their
continued development and support of OS/2 in version 2.1. We were one of
the first European developers to adapt this environment several years
ago, and have watched a steady stream of improvements, particularly for
real time communications software such as ours, since day one. Our SOM
based products will give us the ability to provide our customers with
products that integrate voice, data, and fax features. Also, the object
orientation of OS/2 and its level of integration is cleaner - definitely
 a cut above other choices."

OPENDOC SPREADSHEET FOR OS/2 COMING SOON FROM ATHENA DESIGN

August 11, 1994

Athena Design, Inc. will soon be shipping a native OS/2* version of its
award winning spreadsheet, Mesa**. Mesa 2 for OS/2 embraces IBM's
OpenDoc strategy by providing the first OpenDoc spreadsheet in the
 world.
OpenDoc, designed to run software across multiple operating systems
from Macintosh to Windows to OS/2 to Unix, is an emerging industry
standard supported by IBM, Apple, WordPerfect, Novell, Lotus,
Borland, Oracle, Taligent, and now Athena Design.
This full function OS/2 spreadsheet will clearly demonstrate OS/2's
superior performance as a desktop operating system with its use of
SOM, OpenDoc, multi-threading and the object oriented user interface.
In addition, Mesa 2 includes MOLI**, the Mesa Object Library Interface
so that customers can integrate Mesa objects with their own line of
 business applications.
Scheduled for release at the end of September, Mesa 2 will include
REXX compatibility. Users will be able to include REXX scripts in
workbooks to automate routine procedures, build applications and drive
the Mesa spreadsheet. In their REXX programs, users will be able to
utilize Athena Design's special MScriptd functions to access Mesa's
 features and functionality.
"OS/2 users know REXX and they can build fantastic applications using
it," says Athena Design, Inc. President David Pollak. "We simply
leveraged the power and familiarity of REXX into Mesa 2. Our beta
    testers are psyched about it!"
Beta testers are not the only ones who are "psyched" about the
forthcoming product. Many people feel that the new software will
spark more interest in OS/2's object oriented technology.
Cliff Reeves, director of object enabling technology at IBM's Personal
Software Products Division, issued the following statement:
"The Mesa 2 spreadsheet component is noteworthy because it
is a high-utility, high-quality software component that can be
exploited in a variety of applications. We are entering a new era
in software development as innovative developers can focus their
skills on high-value areas and profit quickly without having to
build and market monolithic applications that have more features
    than most people need."
Dave Harrington, director of software development programs at IBM's
Personal Software Products Division, issued the following statement:
"I am delighted to see the value that Athena Design is
creating for their customers through the use of OS/2's native,
    object-oriented technology. Developing applications from
object-oriented components will likely be the wave of the future
for application development. Athena Design has caught that wave
early and their customers should be the beneficiaries."
Jed Harris, executive director of Component Integration Laboratories
  (CI Labs), said the following:
"Athena Design's Mesa 2 OpenDoc spreadsheet part is an excellent
example of how quickly developers are adopting the OpenDoc
philosophy of componentized applications and object-oriented
     environments."
Since its public debut at Object World in San Francisco last month,
Mesa 2 and Athena Design are getting a lot of attention in the press.
The product launch includes a special $99 introductory price starting
August 15th. This offer will be good for a limited time only. The
specially priced package comes with 90 days of technical support via

OS/2 Application Development News

IBM Announces Early Experience Program for Taligent

SAN FRANCISCO, July 27, 1994...IBM today announced an Early Experience Program for the company's implementation of the Taligent Application Environment (TalAE). The Early Experience Program, which will begin in August and support OS/2*, AS/400* and AIX*, aims to encourage development of TalAE-exploitive tools and applications.

This program is designed to help a select group of corporate and ISV developers learn the TalAE programming model and develop an understanding of framework-based development. As Early Experience participants, the developers will receive code, documentation, and training for support of the TalAE on IBM's operating systems.

"The Early Experience program offers developers a great opportunity to get a head start in the emerging marketplace for object-oriented applications," said Cliff Reeves, director of object technology, IBM Personal Software Products division. "With the TalAE technology, they can explore an exciting new development environment and start designing innovative new applications, as well as provide us with crucial user feedback."

IBM intends to support the Taligent Application Environment on OS/2, AIX, and selected components on OS/400*, beginning in 1995. Users will also be able to access OS/400 data from within TalAE-exploitive applications developed in OS/2 or AIX.

An open, portable application system for the enterprise desktop, TalAE will establish the basis for a new software development and deployment standard within the computer industry. Built with a rich, comprehensive set of object-oriented frameworks, it allows developers to program more efficiently by reusing both code and design. The scope of these frameworks spans the spectrum of functionality, including user interface, multimedia, networking, communications and data access programs. Developers can use these frameworks as they are or use them as the foundation from which they can create new frameworks to fit unique application needs.

The TalAE is designed to run on 32-bit operating systems, including OS/2, AIX, HP-UX**, PowerOpen**, and future versions of System 7**. Applications that adhere to the TalAE programming model will be source compatible and easily deployed across these environments.

Taligent provided IBM and its other investors, Apple and Hewlett-Packard, with the Application Environment reference release in June, when it also introduced the Taligent PEEK (Partners Early Experience Kit) early support program.

Taligent is an independent system software company owned by Apple Computer Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM. Taligent, along with its investors, will license, market and support its software products worldwide.

Additional Information Regarding the Taligent Early Experience

August 3, 1994

The July 27th press release at Object World in San Francisco on IBM's Taligent Application Frameworks (ITAF) Early Experience Program has generated additional inquiries from IBM marketing representatives and their customers. Thank you for your interest and support.

The ITAF for OS/2 Early Experience Program is designed to give a limited number of organizations the opportunity to develop an application or enhance an existing application using IBM's TAF product. Organizations will be selected based on their technical and financial commitment to the program objectives. The specific criteria used for the selection process are provided below.

If you meet all these criteria and you wish to obtain additional information that may lead to you being selected for this program, you may contact Bob Grafe at IBM, Austin, Texas at 512-823-1503. (IBM internal inquiries should be directed to RJGRAFE at AUSVM1.) IBM will review additional considerations on an individual basis to ensure that participation will be mutually beneficial to both developers and IBM. In addition, IBM reserves the right to limit the number of participants in this program.

Participant Selection Criteria: -------------------------------

Unless otherwise stated, participants should expect to bear the cost of the following activities.

 - Extensive object-oriented application development experience with C++
(preferably with IBM's C Set ++ compiler). The assigned team should
have designed and developed at least one C++ application which has
been deployed so that they are familiar with the full life cycle of
the technology. Participants are also asked to assign an executive
sponsor who will provide the required senior management attention and
    resources.
 - Experience in OS/2 development
 - Good match between possible applications and product's capabilities
 - Resource available to utilize the technology immediately in a
committed project. The resource must include an experienced
object-oriented lead who can manage the program for its duration.
This person will be expected to do the following:
    * attend the education class to be provided prior to the start of
       the program (in phase 2, IBM will pay the class enrollment fee;
participants will pay all other travel expenses)
    * screen all problems before reporting them to IBM to assure that
       they are legitimate problems
 - Commitment to do at least one of the following:
     * enhance or modify a current application, for evaluation purposes,
to use Taligent functions in place of corresponding platform
functions (identify services to be modified and provide feedback
on ease of modification or reasons why modification could not be
accomplished) * write a portable commercial or sample application
with components that use services which usually make the
application dependent on the operating system * write a
commercial or sample application or tool using Taligent's new
        programming model (see product description)
 - Commitment to describe the scope or type of project (application)
that you would develop for this program.
 - Commitment and ability to obtain required hardware before start date
    of EEP
 - Commitment to participate in periodic status reviews which will be
held to provide feedback while the program is in process. In
addition, participants may be asked to accept/assess additional code
drops, and evaluate the early experience program.
 - Willingness to sign Confidential Disclosure Agreement with IBM

OpenDoc Survey Results

June 30, 1994

The following results from Apple's WorldWide Developers Conference (WWDC) indicates that OpenDoc has won the hearts and minds of Mac developers. OLE is dead on the Mac (68% of the developers said they won't use OLE and almost 70% said they will use OpenDoc!!!!!).

Winning the Mac is a major step toward winning the INTEL-space.

WWDC at OpenDoc Survey Analysis

This year, one of the strongest messages from the WWDC was OpenDoc. Most everyone on the OpenDoc team felt we succeeded in getting our

OpenDoc messages to developers. Here to try to quantify that feeling are the results of the OpenDoc team survey.

The bottom line: These survey results confirm that we were enormously successful in getting our message to developers.

Highlights:

  • In the overall conference survey, when asked what the two most important take aways from the conference were, almost 70 percent of the people who responded said OpenDoc. By comparison, PowerPC and Copeland were cited in approximately 20 percent of the responses.
  • 86 percent of the people who responded to the OpenDoc specific survey indicated they intended to build a sample part.
  • Most developers do not plan to support OLE. (68% said no to OLE support)
  • Over 60 percent of developers plan to start OpenDoc development now and 20 percent would like to ship at OpenDoc intro.
  • Edit in place, scripting, source code availability and Windows support were deemed the four most significant features of OpenDoc.

DEVELOPER RESPONSE SUMMARIES

Development Scheduling

61 percent of the respondents are planning to start development of their OpenDoc part editors and containers 'now'. Here's the breakdown of their responses to when they plan to start OpenDoc development:

              Now: 61%
      6-12 Months: 28%
     12-24 Months: 7%
       24+ Months: 1%
            Never: 2%
In terms of when their applications would be ready to ship, close to 20
percent responded "at OpenDoc Intro". Here's the breakdown of when they
 thought they'd ship OpenDoc product:
         At intro: 18%
      6-12 Months: 34%
     12-24 Months: 36%
       24+ Months: 6%
            Never: 6%

OLE Support

Most developers thought they would not incorporate OLE. 68 percent
indicated they did not plan to support OLE 2.0. Of those that planned to
support OLE, more than half plan to ship within the next 12 months.
Those interested in OLE seem to be planning to ship soon. Also, most of
these developers appeared to be cross platform developers (As
determined by those that highly valued the Windows feature of OpenDoc.)

Feature Prioritization

When asked to rate a number of features of OpenDoc on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is not important and 5 is very important, several categories stood out above the rest as highly important features.

Feature rating - in order from most important to least.

      1) Edit in Place
      2) Source code availability
      3) Scripting
      4) Windows support
      5) Validation Services
      6) Linking
         ---------------------
      7) CILabs sponsors
      8) Drafts
      9) UNIX support
     10) OLE interoperability
     11) OS/2 support
There is a clear break between the linking and CI Labs features. The
top 6 rated features are roughly the same in terms of level of support.
After linking, there is a significant a drop off in the perceived
 importance of the features.
     Actual data:
                          1 2 3 4 5
     Edit in Place 2% 2% 9% 40% 47%
     Source Code 1% 5% 15% 28% 51%
     Scripting 0% 2% 19% 39% 40%
     Windows 5% 9% 15% 23% 48%
     Validation 0% 3% 17% 49% 30%
     Linking 1% 5% 17% 51% 27%
     CI Labs 5% 11% 31% 33% 20%
     Drafts 6% 21% 31% 32% 10%
     UNIX 19% 18% 24% 23% 16%
     OLE 19% 24% 18% 19% 20%
     OS/2 31% 20% 27% 14% 9%

Session Statistics

The survey respondents attended an average of 6.2 sessions on OpenDoc. We asked them to pick out the three most useful and compelling sessions they attended. Here are their picks for the top OpenDoc sessions (in order):

1) Under the Hood
2) OpenDoc Overview
3) Frameworks
4) OpenDoc Cross Platform
5) Revving your App

Caveats about the survey data:

This survey data is compiled from 200 OpenDoc surveys returned to us at the Friday "Revving Your App to Support OpenDoc" session. Most likely, attendees that were attending OpenDoc sessions on the fifth day of the conference are serious about their interest in OpenDoc. The survey results about adoption rates are most likely biased favorably. Even with a healthy grain of salt, the results are still quite encouraging!

There is certainly more analysis we can do with this data. This summary covers most of the descriptive statistics from the survey. The fact is, we have considerable momentum from the WWDC in these attendees minds. OpenDoc Evangelism will work to continue the momentum and hold these developers to their commitments to write and send in sample parts.

Please feel free to link or call with questions.

New OS/2 Publication Scheduled to Release in August

The following release was distributed by Allen-Hamilton Publishing and is being reprinted here with the publisher's knowledge. For more information on OS/2 Personal, please contact the publisher as indicated in the notice.

Tampa Bay, Florida, 17th June, 1994 - International Business Machine's OS/2 has become the operating system of choice for individuals who want more power from their personal computers, and with the number of shipped units recently passing five million, Allen-Hamilton Publishing Corporation felt the time was right to launch a new kind of publication for these users. "We chose a Windows-based hyper-media format because just about everybody who has OS/2 has Windows and DOS installed." explained Mark Hamilton, Senior Editor for OS/2 Personal. "It also enables us to produce a magazine that is user-friendly, easy to read and is less damaging to the environment. We thought about using OS/2's INF format but if we chose this route, we'd eliminate current users of Windows who want to learn more about OS/2 before adopting it as their personal operating system."

"Our audience are those who understand the power of OS/2 and also those who want more than Windows has to offer," Hamilton continued, "such as pre-emptive multitasking running more than one program at once," and better protection against data loss. Perhaps a user may wish to operate two or three copies of the same program -- something that is not efficient with Windows on DOS."

To be published monthly, OS/2 Personal will offer news and reviews of software and hardware, provide tips, tricks and hints as well as a regular cartoon feature. The publication will also recommend books, review on-line services and report on issues that are important to OS/2 users.

OS/2 Personal will publish its first issue on August 1, 1994 and will be available for download from a number of ftp sites around the world, including ftp.cdrom.com in the United States and Demon Internet in London, England; copies will also be available in the OS2USER Forum on CompuServe. For those who do not have a modem, OS/2 Personal is available on diskette and can be sent via US Mail or Federal Express.

IBM PERSON-TO-PERSON NAMED BEST UNITED KINGDOM PRODUCT

June 9, 1994

IBM's Person-to-Person* for Windows** has been named the best United Kingdom product in the 1994 Ziff-Davis Europe Software Excellence Awards.

This recognition came June 6 during the Software Publishers Association European Conference held in Cannes, France. Ziff-Davis Europe publishes seven information industry magazines for the European market. The Software Excellence Awards are designed to honor the best software products offered in Europe.

Person-to-Person was developed by the Networking Software Division's Hursley Laboratory in the United Kingdom. It allows up to eight users in different locations to simultaneously view and annotate anything that can be placed on a workstation, even if the users have different communications protocols and operating systems. Discussions of the material takes place over telephones. The video option allows conference attendees to share stored images or live video in windows on their displays.

Ziff-Davis Europe also recognized IBM's OS/2* for Windows 3.1 with it's Grand Technical Excellence Award. Both awards were presented during the four-day conference, which was attended by more than 600 developers, independent software vendors, software support organizations, software publishers and documentation publishers.

"I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of IBM," said Scott Bohin, Networking/EMEA brand manager for Person to Person. "Although developed in Hursley, this product is being shipped worldwide and interoperates with Person-to-Person for OS/2. This acknowledgment of Person-to-Person by Ziff-Davis indicates a trust and understanding of IBM's strategy of building a sound base for collaborative working rather than hyping applications built on an inflexible base."

Person-to-Person is available for both OS/2 and Windows. Recent enhancements include Novell*** SPX support, and remote object linking and embedding capability (an IBM exclusive in Windows version 1.0.3).

While evaluating products for the first-annual Editor's Choice Awards,
OS/2 MAGAZINE's editors looked for products that "make a difference" to
the OS/2 community. "These are books that that are sworn by, not sworn
at," said Alan Zeichick, Editor-in-Chief of OS/2 MAGAZINE. "They
highlight the benefits of using OS/2, IBM's powerful 32-bit operating
 system."
The awards were presented at the OS/2 World Conference, held July 19-22,
1994, in Santa Clara, Calif, and will be announced in the October 1994
 issue of OS/2 MAGAZINE.

IBM OS/2 IS "BEST OF SHOW" AT COMDEX/SPRING, WINDOWS WORLD '94

AUSTIN, Texas, June 1, 1994 ... IBM's PC software star, OS/2*, won its 40th major award last week at COMDEX/Windows World '94 where the beta of a new version earned the top honor, "Best of Show."

The award was presented by BYTE magazine and by show sponsors, The Interface Group, at a ceremony on the show's final day. In bestowing the honor, the editors of BYTE recognized the performance-tuned OS/2 beta for the impact it will have on the industry's future.

OS/2 was singled out from more than 1,000 products demonstrated at the show, including offerings from Microsoft, Apple and Lotus Development Corp.

"This is a particularly sweet victory for OS/2, coming at the major Windows** show of the year, where Microsoft's Chicago was demonstrated publicly for the first time," said Wally Casey, director of marketing for IBM's Personal Software Products division. "We are being recognized for what we are delivering -- a powerful, versatile operating system that can awaken the productivity of a wide range of hardware, from laptops to the biggest servers."

The beta program will test a smaller, faster version of OS/2 in response to the needs of the expanding mobile and small business market. Because it requires only 4 MB, the product will extend the same powerful features delivered by other OS/2 products to a much broader audience -- users with smaller and less powerful computers.

"The OS/2 development team continues to deliver on every challenge it faces," said Lois Dimpfel, director, Programming Center, for IBM's PSP division. "What OS/2 will deliver for customers this time is an environment far superior to Windows which provides a practical alternative for the traveling or home worker, as well as for corporate productivity seekers."

Like other OS/2 products, the beta will deliver pre-emptive multitasking, advanced 32-bit graphics, potent multimedia support, an object-oriented graphical interface, and the unique ability to run DOS, Windows and OS/2 applications concurrently. The beta boasts an updated interface that is scheduled to include animated icons, superior graphics and an easy dashboard utility. It also features PlayAtWill, which automatically configures and monitors PCMCIA devices in real time. Additional printer, CD ROM and PCMCIA support is included for multimedia and portable users.

The OS/2 beta program is open to anyone who would like to subscribe. Interested participants can call (800) 251-2177 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT for a CD-ROM version at a price of $14.95. The code also can be downloaded from the IBM OS2FORUM Library (GO OS2BETA) on CompuServe and the IBM OS2BBS (OS2PERF1).

STORIES BEHIND THE AWARDS

This section contains detailed stories about the circumstances behind many of the awards OS/2 has received.

MAY 1994 - COMDEX #42, #43

Background:

The Personal OS/2 beta (OS/2 for Windows Performance Beta 1 Version 2.99) was chosen by BYTE's editors as the overall Best Product at COMDEX in Atlanta at the end of May.

Personal OS/2 from IBM, the beta of a 4MB version of OS/2 for Windows that is slated to ship this year, was named "Best of Show" and "Best System/Development Software Category" in BYTE magazine and The Interface Group's" Best of COMDEX/Spring and Windows World '94" award ceremony in Atlanta today. Candidates for the "Best of Show" award were the 12 winners of the individual categories. Personal OS/2 captured the award, surpassing Digital's Alpha microprocessor, Apple's PowerBook 500, and Microsoft's OLE Custom Controls, WinG and Windows NT.

The Personal OS/2 Beta also won best of system/development category, beating out Microsoft's Windows NT Workstation, Windows NT, and Chicago, Microsoft's newest version of Windows (not yet released).

Beta code normally does not receive such an honor. However, the editors were evidently so impressed with the quality and performance of this most recent version of OS/2 ((to be released officially later this year)) that they bestowed the award anyway, even when faced with offerings from Microsoft.

"We were surprised," said Lee Reiswig. "This is the beta test version, and it doesn't contain all the capabilities and exciting parts, but it still managed to get best of show."

When presenting the award Jerry Pournelle said it was because of the significant impact this product will have on the future of the industry.

Wally Casey, IBM's Director of Marketing, said if you were going to Chicago from here, you have to set your watch back two years. The entire crowd broke out in laughter.

6 JUNE 1994 ZIFF-DAVIS (EUROPE) #41

Software Excellence Award

Grand Award for Technical Excellence

Background:

At a dinner on 6 June 1994 in Cannes, IBM OS/2 for Windows 3.1 was awarded the top prize in the Ziff Davis Europe Software Excellence Awards.

OS/2 for Windows 3.1 won the Grand Technical Excellence Award. The other two finalists in this category were Novell Dos 7 and Stacker 4.0 for Windows and DOS from Stac Electronics.

The Ziff-Davis Europe Software Excellence Awards honor the publishers and republishers of the best Software products in the European market.

OS/2 for Windows was also entered into the Environment/Desktop category, but lost out to The Norton Desktop 3.0 for Windows. The other finalist in this category was Microsoft Windows NT 3.1.

In the 1993 awards, OS/2 Version 2.0 won the Environment/Desktop category, but not the coveted top honor, the Grand Award for Technical Excellence.

IBM Person-to-Person for Windows, developed at IBM Hursley in England, was awarded the prize for Best UK Product. (The OS/2 version has been available for some time, and other language versions are also now available.)

31 MAY 1994 PC MAGAZINE (USA) #39

Editor's Choice Award -- 32-bit Operating System

Background:

The 31 May 1994 issue of PC Magazine gives OS/2 2.1 the "Editor's Choice" award in its review of the 32-bit Operating Systems on the market. OS/2 beat Windows NT, NextStep, and the various flavors of PC Unix.

Now IBM can add the vaunted "Editor's Choice" insignia to the list of prizes in its OS/2 ads.

The May 31, 1994 edition compares 32-bit Operating Systems. The key table from the article is as follows:

PC MAGAZINE MAY 31, 1994 VOLUME 13 NUMBER 10 pg. 204

  EDITORS' CHOICE, OS/2, Version 2.1
"If you're looking for a true 32-bit, multithreaded, multitasking
operating system suitable for both desktop and server duty, look no
further. OS/2 2.1 delivers a robust platform that offers a
user-friendly desktop paradigm, flawless DOS and Microsoft Windows
support and excellent connectivity to all classes of computers."
"Buying an advanced OS is like buying a house: You can't do without
one, but even the nicest ones force you to live with compromises. Our
choice goes to the operating system we feel currently offers the most
on the plus side--with the smallest number of drawbacks.
"Our Editors' Choice designation goes to IBM's OS/2, Version 2.1. This
operating system impressed us with its stability, its true
object-oriented GUI interface, and strong DOS and Microsoft Windows
emulation. OS/2 is far less hardware-intensive than most of the other
reviewed operating systems, running comfortably with 8MB of RAM, even
on a 386. This and its low price make it a strong candidate as a
  corporate desktop standard.
"Additional high points include OS/2 2.1's implementation of SOM, a
powerful language-independent object model; and REXX, IBM's
  cross-platform procedures language...."
The rest can be obtained from PC Magazine itself. SCO Open Desktop
received an honorable mention, with Windows NT receiving a "we were
  impressed." statement.
The other Operating Systems included in the "FACE-OFF" were:
  - Interactive Unix 4.0, - Nextstep 3.2, - Novell UnixWare 1.1, -
     Solaris for x86 2.1.

19 May 1994 Binary (Spain) #37

(Spanish edition of BYTE)

Award for Excellence 1993

Background (from Jose Pedro Moro, IBM PSP Spain):

28 MARCH 1994 INFOWORLD (USA) #34, #35, #36

  #34 Interoperability Award
#35 Readers' Choice - Software Product of the Year 1993
#36 Readers' Choice - Overall Product of the Year 1993
Background, InfoWorld Magazine, 28 March 1994:
"Acclamation by peers -- not a bad measure, but it doesn't reflect what
the customers think about the product. That's how InfoWorld's Product
of the Year differs; we give you a chance to tell us and the industry
which products made it to the top.
In January, we asked 100,000 InfoWorld readers to vote for best
products in the software, hardware, and networking categories and1 the
top overall product of 1993. The results are in and very interesting.
In hardware, the IBM ThinkPad 720C beat the competition; and in both
Software and Overall, OS/2 2.1 was the clear winner.
For IBM it was a very good year. We have to declare OS/2 the Reigning
Champion when it comes to our Product of the Year balloting. Version
  2.0 ... won last year's overall category as well. Today's OS/2 both
meets expectations and can run comfortably on the average new PC. At
one time thought of as the Rodney Dangerfield of computer operating
systems, OS/2 is getting plenty of respect from InfoWorld's readers."
  (InfoWorld Magazine, 28 Mar 94)
"How well does an operating system get along with others on the
network? The top grade went to OS/2 2.1. In the interoperability tests
published in November, OS/2 2.1 provided the broadest native
connectivity of all the operating systems tested. Network access
integrates easily into the Workplace shell, down to the printer
objects." (InfoWorld Magazine, 28 Mar 94)

  1994 WIN 100 Award - Operating Systems
Background (IBM PSP USA Press Release, 9 March 94)
OS/2 CHALKS UP WIN 100 AWARD
IBM'S OS/2 NAMED ONE OF THE BEST WINDOWS PRODUCTS OF THE YEAR
  AUSTIN, Texas, March 9, 1994 ...
Catapulting to the top of the competitive operating systems category,
IBM's OS/2* captured WINDOWS Magazine's "WIN 100 Award." Named one of
the best Windows** products of the year, IBM's award-winning, 32-bit
operating system beat Windows NT for this year's recognition.
The WIN 100 Awards are selected by the editors of WINDOWS Magazine
annually, recognizing the top 100 Windows hardware and software
  products of the year.
"IBM's desktop operating system comes of age in a version that provides
performance equal to (and in some cases, better than) Windows 3.1 while
running Windows applications," said Jake Kirchner, the magazine's
executive editor. "It's not surprising that WINDOWS Magazine chose
  OS/2 2.1 for a WIN 100 Award this year. OS/2 supports Windows 3.0 and
3.1 applications in Standard and Enhanced mode and offers 32-bit
  processing."
Wally Casey, director of marketing for IBM's Personal Software Products
division noted, "OS/2 has been designed as an integrating platform with
capabilities to support DOS/Windows as well as OS/2 applications.
OS/2's popularity continues to surge due to strong customer demand,
especially with the recent introduction of OS/2 for Windows. By giving
OS/2 the WIN 100 Award, the editors of WINDOWS Magazine acknowledge the
industry-wide acceptance of OS/2 as the 32-bit operating system of
  choice, even among Windows users."
OS/2, like Windows, is an operating environment for PCs. OS/2,
however, not only runs DOS and Windows applications, but it runs
several at the same time, and in many cases faster than in Windows. In
addition, OS/2 allows users to run the latest 32-bit applications.
OS/2 for Windows provides this same capability to users who already own
Windows 3.1. For the price of Windows or DOS utilities, users get
better performance, fewer crashes, and true multitasking.

Best Products of 1993 - Byte Award of Excellence

Background:

(IBM PSP USA Press Release, 16 Feb 1994)
OS/2 WINS BYTE MAGAZINE'S 1993 AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
  February 16, 1994
IBM's award-winning 32-bit PC operating system, has snapped up BYTE
  Magazine's "1993 Award of Excellence,".
OS/2 2.1 was the only software/operating system recognized as one of
the three "top vote-getters," sharing the honors with the
  IBM/Apple/Motorola PowerPC 601 and Intel's Pentium processor.
BYTE Magazine's 1993 Editorial Awards, which comprise Awards of
Excellence, Merit and Distinction, recognize breakthrough products that
set the standards for innovation and price/performance. According to
BYTE, of the many computer-related products and technologies that
debuted in 1993, only 71 earned the prestigious awards and, of those,
only 16 are honored with Awards of Excellence.
  Jon Udell, BYTE's senior technical editor-at-large, lauded IBM's OS/2.
"Running OS/2 2.1 on an 8 MB machine that hasn't a prayer of running
Windows NT, I find that it delivers many of the same benefits: robust
multithreading and multitasking, a comprehensive 32-bit API, an
advanced file system, and support for Windows 3.1 software," Udell
said. "Software developers have known for years that OS/2 is a far
more productive environment than DOS plus Windows. With the polish and
maturity of version 2.1, more and more users are discovering the same
  advantage."

DECEMBER 1993 PC MAGAZINE (UK) #25

1993 Technical Innovation Award - Best Desktop Operating System

Background (from PSP EMEA press release, 2 December 1993):

IBM OS/2 2.1 has won another top industry award. The UK's "PC Magazine" has awarded it the "Best Desktop Operating System" accolade.

The judges were trade journalists and product experts from the Ziff-Davis publishing organization. They rated OS/2 2.1 the best Desktop Operating System, beating competitors such as Windows NT 3.1 and MS-DOS 6.0.

OS/2 2.1 was also one of the finalists in the overall "Product of the Year category (won by the Intel PCI bus).

The citation praises OS/2 2.1 for "its ability to run applications from other operating systems ((DOS and Windows)) to a standard that's as good as, if not better than, the native platforms", and calls it "a staggering technical achievement that all this power is actually usable on a 386DX with 6MB of RAM."

NOVEMBER 1993 PC/COMPUTING (USA) #23

MVP (Most Valuable Product) Award - Systems Software Background (IBM PSP US Press Release, 17 Nov 1993):

IBM's OS/2 NAMED TOP PC OPERATING SYSTEM

  LAS VEGAS, Nov. 17...
Industry acceptance continues to build for IBM's advanced 32-bit
operating system, OS/2. For the second consecutive year at COMDEX,
OS/2 was awarded PC/Computing's prestigious Most Valuable Product award
in the Systems Software category. OS/2 2.1 was chosen over Windows NT
3.1 and Novell DOS 7.0 for the honor.
The publication's December cover story recommended readers try OS/2 2.1
and not "sit around waiting for the next generation operating system.
It's here now, and it works great... It is, in short, everything you'd
want an operating system to be."
"These awards aren't easy to win, and it's particularly pleasing
because the team in our Boca Raton lab produced a great product in OS/2
2.0 and won this award last year" said Lee Reiswig, president of IBM's
Personal Software Products. "Now they've produced an even greater
product in OS/2 2.1 and won again this year against more competition.
Congratulations are in order for all of the talented folks at IBM who
  made OS/2 2.1 MVP 1993."
The award was presented during a spectacular ceremony held at Caesar's
Palace on the eve of COMDEX. Paul Somerson, PC/Computing
editor-in-chief, said "We look for technological innovation and
ease-of-use above all else. Products must not only be the best in
their category but also address a wide variety of customer needs," he
said. "OS/2 has the most attractive user interface available on the PC
and it's a true 32-bit, multithreaded operating system."

IBM OFFERS INCENTIVES TO BUY LAN SERVER THIS SUMMER

AUSTIN, Texas, June 21, 1994 ... IBM is making Summer '94 a great time to buy OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 by offering purchase incentives for both new and existing LAN Server customers.

"We are protecting our customers' LAN Server investments by providing discounts for upgrading from Version 3.0 to Version 4.0," said Phil Powers, director of marketing, LAN Systems, IBM's Personal Software Products division. "And, we're offering some great incentives for new customers to move to LAN Server."

IBM today also announced the release of a beta testing program for LAN Server 4.0 and an extension of support for LAN Server 3.0 through the end of 1995.

Customers who purchase LAN Server 3.0 before LAN Server 4.0 is available this fall can upgrade to the new version for half the normal upgrade price.

"We are making it easy to move up to LAN Server 4.0, when it ships later this year," said Powers. "Customers need only provide a LAN Server 3.0 proof of purchase dated after June 28 to take advantage of the upgrade discount."

As an additional incentive, IBM is offering a package which includes LAN Server 3.0 Entry and 12 clients for $900, the price of the clients alone.

A similar package deal gives customers LAN Server 3.0 Advanced plus 35 clients for $2,625, the price of the clients. Dealer prices may vary. Both promotions include the half-price upgrade to LAN Server 4.0 and will be offered from June 28 through Oct. 28, 1994. The packages are available for customers who currently use competitive network operating systems or earlier versions of LAN Server.

"Ultimately this is less expensive than waiting to purchase Version 4.0," said Powers.

The half-price upgrade option must be exercised within 90 days of LAN Server 4.0 availability.

DB2/2 SET THE PACE AT INDY 500

 SOMERS, N.Y., June 21, 1994 . . . When Al Unser, Jr. crossed the
Indianapolis 500 finish line recently, it was IBM's DATABASE 2* OS/2*
(DB2/2*) software that had tracked his performance for all 200 laps of
the 500-mile race and clocked him in as the winner.
This is the first time that the Indy 500 relied on database technology
to track all of the statistics involved in this high-speed, high-stakes
sporting event. Utilizing DB2/2 -- one of IBM's client/server computing
solutions -- running on the IBM Personal System/2* (PS/2*), Indy 500
officials were instantly able to obtain actual times and speeds for each
driver at 22 points along the 2.5 mile oval track. The IBM software
also was able to record the vital statistics of each car and driver,
including time spent off the track in the pit, real-time race positions
and time intervals between the race leader and following cars.
From each of the 22 points along the Indianapolis Motor Speedway,
information was fed into IBM's DB2/2 database via an advanced cabling
system embedded under the track. Installed within each car was a
transmitter that was activated each time a car passed one of the points.
Within a matter of seconds after a car passed a point on the track,

u DB2/2 queries could generate a report based on the data captured,

allowing racing officials to monitor, for example, order and speed of
cars during a yellow flag caution period (when speeds are reduced and
passing prohibited due to a collision and/or debris on the track).

Qualifying Runs

For 16 days prior to the actual running of the Indy 500, 50 drivers in
78 cars ran more than 17,000 practice laps, seeking enough speed to earn
a race day starting position. Only the fastest 33 drivers in four days
of official four-lap qualification runs would compete on race day.
During each of the qualifying runs, DB2/2 collected, organized and
provided details on each driver's lap times, maximum straight-away speed
and average corner speed. Each day, throughout the day, DB2/2 would
generate reports that provided each team with details that they could
use strategically to improve their performance.
"IBM's DB2/2 software ran without a glitch," said Art Graham, director
of timing and scoring for the United States Auto Club (USAC), the
governing body of the Indianapolis 500. "We depend on IBM's database
technology as a fundamental piece of our advanced race information
system, which provides accurate and comprehensive car and driver
 information instantaneously."
IBM has been a part of the Indianapolis 500 since 1927, when the
company's founder, Thomas J. Watson, leased key punches and tabulators
to USAC to track timing and scoring.
IBM products have also played a big role in the Olympic Games for the
last 60 years and have served as official scoring and information
systems for the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour, the
National Basketball Association (NBA) and U.S. Open Tennis.

DB2/2 is a 32-bit, OS/2-based relational database management system designed specifically for customers working in a client/server LAN environment who want to take full advantage of IBM's industry-leading database technology.

COMPAQ ADDS IBM OS/2 AND LAN SERVER TO SMARTSTART LINEUP

HOUSTON, June 20, 1994 ... In response to customer demand for optimized integration of the IBM OS/2 operating system on Compaq products, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today announced the availability of IBM OS/2, LAN Server and TCP/IP on Compaq SmartStart, and support for IBM OS/2 and LAN Server on Compaq Insight Manager. These products will be available from Compaq starting in July.

Compaq and IBM have been working together since 1991 to ensure the highest level of compatibility and support for IBM OS/2 and related software products on Compaq hardware products. With increased customer demand for multi-vendor support of operating systems, today's announcement reflects the stepped-up efforts by the two companies to elevate the level of integration and improve the usability of Compaq-and-IBM OS/2-based server platforms.

SmartStart is Compaq's innovative method of distributing, installing and optimizing industry standard operating systems on Compaq platforms to ensure a reliable and supportable configuration. Shipped with Compaq ProLiant and ProSignia servers, the SmarStart CD-ROM package contains encrypted operating systems and software which can be unlocked simply by purchasing activation keys from Compaq. Software purchased from Compaq through SmartStart is competitively priced with software purchased from other vendors.

"Compaq is committed to providing tighter integration and improved ease of installation and operation to our customers who have selected IBM OS/2," said Gary Stimac, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Compaq. "As an industry leader, we are dedicated to ensuring optimization of our servers for all key operating systems. This alliance with IBM will provide the framework for our continued efforts to support OS/2 on Compaq platforms."

OS/2, IBM's 32-bit personal operating system, has won more than 40 industry awards for its industry-leading performance and technology. LAN Server, IBM's powerful multi-platform network operating system, was developed to take advantage of OS/2's rich client/server capabilities.

"We are pleased with the customer demand for OS/2 products that is leading hardware companies to take actions like this one by Compaq," said Dan Lautenbach, Assistant General Manager Personal Software, IBM Personal Software Products division. "This partnership gives customers another choice of platforms optimized for OS/2 and LAN Server."

IBM OS/2 and LAN Server also will be supported by Compaq Insight Manager, a Windows-based network management tool which helps network administrators more efficiently manage Compaq server environments. Standard on Compaq Proliant and ProSignia servers, Insight Manager allows the server to intelligently monitor itself and its environment and alert the administrator to potential problems or changes in server status. Customers who purchase OS/2 or LAN Server via SmartStart will receive an activation key for Insight Manager and a key for Insight Management Agents for OS/2 at no additional charge. (Agents provide specific information about Compaq servers such as status of disk and memory subsystems, supported security features, and specific health information, such as error logs and temperature.)

Future versions and upgrades of OS/2 and LAN Server via SmartStart - including IBM's planned support for symmetrical multiprocessing -- will be fully supported on Compaq servers and available on SmartStart. Compaq and IBM have been working together to develop platform-specific drivers to support multiprocessing ProLiant servers, and a number of Compaq customers have been participating in a beta program to ensure full compatibility of Compaq products with IBM's future SMP products.

The items posted on the bulletin board are accessible to all customer and IBM personnel subscribers to the IBMLink (TM) facility, TALKLink, a prerequisite for receiving Forum service. TALKLink provides the capability for customers to review information electronically, submit questions or requests, and receive answers or information.

With Forum, the customer receives:

  • Conferences and forums - "AS-IS" question and answer bulletin boards containing product-related topics.
  • Customer-to-customer messaging - customers can send messages to each other.
  • Software library - download application programs and upload contributions either owned by the customer or which the customer can legally make generally available.

CLIENT/SERVER ON THE INFORMATION HIGHWAY (INTERNET)

Everyone is talking about the information highway, but how do you sort through the massive amount of data available on Internet? The answer is Gopher. Gopher is a distributed document search and retrieval tool and one of the primary means used to organize and look at information on Internet. Files are organized in menus and placed on Gopher servers, so Gopher clients can access them through a user-friendly interface.

IBM now has an Internet gopher server dedicated to IBM Client/Server (C/S) information. Items in the C/S gopher include IBM newsletters (such as this newsletter), C/S product information, case studies (success stories), etc.

CUSTOMER ACCESS

  1. With a gopher client, the external name is csgopher.gpl.ibm.com (IP address 198.5.4.1). This newsletter can be found in the "Newsletters" menu.
  2. Anonymous FTP to csgopher.gpl.ibm.com in THE NEWS directory. The userid is 'anonymous' and no password is required.
