Abstract

The labs and lectures of this course provide the knowledge and tools for implementing IBM LAN Server Program under the OS/2 (R) Extended Edition Communications Manager. This course includes information on developing a plan to migrate from the DOS-based PC Local Area Network (LAN) program; installing and specifying LAN Server domains; defining users, applications and security; and administering the functions of requesters and servers. Students will learn techniques for optimizing network server performance and investigating error conditions. In hands-on lab exercises, students will perform tasks which reinforce the lecture material using workstations configured as requesters, servers, and domain controllers.

Objectives

After completing this course, a student should be able to:

  • Plan for use of the IBM LAN Server Program in local area networks with mixed operating systems
  • Specify the requirements for migration to and installation of the LAN Server Program
  • Plan and implement the domain definitions including users, applications and security
  • Diagnose error conditions
  • Optimize the availability and performance of network servers
  • Administer operations of server and requester functions.

Duration

  • 4.5 days

Audience

This class is intended for local area network technical support personnel responsible for implementing a LAN and providing file, print and program sharing for workstation users.

Prerequisites

  • DOS LAN Software Implementation and Tuning (G4007) or DOS LAN Software Implementation and Performance Workshop (G3714)
  • IBM Discover/Education OS/2 Introduction and Implementation (DE012)
  • Implementing OS/2 Communications Manager in the Enterprise (G3686).

Equivalent experience may be substituted for these courses.

The text, OS/2 - A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE, Dick Conklin, published by John Wiley & Sons, New York, 1988 (G325-0403) is also a suitable source of background information on OS/2.
