TUITION: $600 PRIVATE CLASS PRICE: $7,000 for 1-14 students; $200 per additional student.

This lecture and lab course teaches students how to use an OS/2 (R) workstation when connected to an AS/400 (R) host as a 5250 terminal or printer. Emphasis will be on using emulation facilities and on operational customization for features such as colors and alarms. Topics include cut and paste, keyboard remapping and the AS/400 PC Support features of virtual disks, file transfer and messaging.

This course is a subset of OS/2 Communications: Introduction to OS/2 for the Communications Manager User Workshop (G4101). Individuals requiring both 5250 and 3270 skills should attend G4101. COURSE CODE: G4105 DURATION: 2 Days

Audience

Individuals who use OS/2 Communications Manager to emulate 5250 terminals and printers that access AS/400 hosts. Students can be professionals, managers or support staff responsible for training other end users.

PREREQUISITES

Before taking this course, a student should be able to:

  • Describe basic computer terms such as disk, diskette, keyboard, mouse
  • Operate a PS/2 (R) (power on/off, inserting diskettes)
  • Identify the connection facility (coax, token-ring) used between the PS/2 and the AS/400.
These skills can be developed by taking prerequisite course:

o Introduction to DOS for OS/2 (P1042) or

  • OS/2 Tutorial (available with OS/2).
Equivalent experience may be substituted for these courses.

Objectives

After completing this course, a student should be able to:

  • Navigate around the OS/2 Workplace Shell (TM)
  • Describe the environment in which Extended Services Communications Manager operates
  • Operate 5250 terminal support to an AS/400 host using token ring
  • Perform initial problem determination/problem source identification (PD/PSI) using OS/2 tools to assist the help desk.
