When I originally was planning my pages I had decided to maintain a library of tips to help people tune their systems for optimal performance. That idea has changed somewhat for several reasons. I have decided to make this page more of a starting point to help you find places that can help you tune all aspects of your OS/2 system's performance.
My reasoning:
- There are many sites devoted solely to providing thorough information on maximizing OS/2's performance, and I feel those sites do a far better job of providing information than I could.
- An addendum to reason 1; There are several "notorious" sites that are merely cutting and pasting other people's hard work without giving due credit. This practice offends me, thus I choose not to give even the appearance of impropriety in my content.
Why have I decided to maintain this page?
The answer for that is simple. Many new OS/2 users complain that the operating system does not perform as well as they had expected. The most common reason for this (in my experience) is that the person who suggested that they try Warp never bothered to explain that there *is* a learning curve, as there is with any "new" piece of software. This learning curve involves aspects of learning to use the features of the Operating System as well as learning how to increase performance. With a little bit of information, anyone can have their OS/2 installation running well, regardless of their experience level.
OS/2 is one of the most efficient of the advanced operating systems available for the x86 architecture in terms of resource utilization. Until the system is properly tuned though, much of the potential can be lost. While I have made an effort to make this information accessible for new OS/2ers, experienced users might benefit from some of the tips that are offered on these sites as well.
Links
These are links to places where you can find information on tuning aspects of your OS/2 system.
IBM's OS/2 Warp Performance Tuning guide | This is perhaps the one of the first places that anyone should look for information. While this site is lacking in regard to tips on exact settings, it has good descriptions of what various settings in config.sys do, as well as good information that can help you plan your installation. |
IBM's OS/2 Warp 4 Capacity Planning and Performance Tuning Guide | This is probably the most thorough IBM document that I have seen regarding tuning OS/2. The information here is primarily directed towards Warp 4, but users of Warp 3 can find useful information here also. If you have a word processor that supports .rtf (Rich Text Format), you can download a copy of this document that you can refer to offline. |
Getting Warped | The author of this site compiled this information in an effort to help his department at work become familiar with OS/2 and upgrade to this fine platform. It is nice to see that he decided to make it available to the rest of the world. This site is recommended to people who have not yet installed OS/2 |
Some Fundamental OS/2 Concepts | This site's goal is to provide a source of information to people who are experienced with computers, but are new to the world of OS/2. As the author says, it is possible that experienced users might learn a few new tricks here as well |
Warp 4 tuning tips | A site maintained by the same person who maintains the website above. He notes, quite accurately, that IBM spent more time on giving a freshly installed appearance to a new install rather than good default performance settings... Don't worry, this site gives tips that help to speed up your Warp 4 system. |
OS/2 Warp 4 Installation Notes | Frank McKenny has spent considerable time gathering information for this document. This guide contains tips for planning and executing your installation. Perhaps the most helpful aspect of this document is contained in a portion to help you prepare for unexpected difficulties. |
Warp Server Resource Center | This is a wonderful resource for people looking for information about Warp Server and getting their system configured well. If you have questions about configuring Warp Server, this is the place to go. |
John Summerfield's Networking Tips | John has spent countless hours gathering a wealth of information related to networking (specifically TCPIP) under OS/2. I've had several frustrating problems that I've solved immediately by looking for information here. |
Master OS/2 Warp Update List | Looking for the latest updates for OS/2? Look no further, because this place has them all. |
