IBM Announces New Product for Windows

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Oct. 20, 1992 ... IBM today made it even easier for customers to link different types of computers in evolving "multivendor" networks. With a new release of TCP/IP for DOS with Windows support, users of the popular program can now reap the benefits of TCP/IP and access applications and data running on other computers throughout an enterprise.

The new DOS release of TCP/IP features easy-to-use graphical interfaces, client/server-based Windows TCP/IP applications, and DOS-based TCP/IP applications. Client/server applications make it possible for desktop users to get any information they need - wherever it is stored - and share it with other users who have different kinds of computers.

TCP/IP Version 2.1 for DOS extends IBM's TCP/IP offerings to all three major desktop platforms - OS/2, DOS and now Windows - so customers can get TCP/IP in any form they need. This release joins IBM's wide range of TCP/IP products, which also includes support for MVS, VM, the AIX family, OS/400 and the System/88, as well as the IBM 3174 Telnet and the IBM 6611 Network Processor.

By providing a consistent Windows graphical interface, IBM TCP/IP Version 2.1 simplifies the way a customer performs a typical TCP/IP task, such as a file transfer or remote printing. This helps businesses be more productive because users don't have to remember complicated commands. The TCP/IP Windows interface provides "point-and-click" for selecting applications, "drag-and-drop" for easy manipulation of objects, on-line help, and the ability to tailor screens.

Printers, for example, can be defined as icons, and files can be printed simply by dragging and drop- ping the file to a specific printer icon. Customers who don't use Windows can also use the new TCP/IP release because it supports DOS-based TCP/IP applications as well.

Other highlights of this release include:

  • Efficient use of memory so more desktop applications can run concurrently with TCP/IP;
  • Industry standards such as the Windows Sockets application programming interface for integration with applications from other vendors computers. This support fulfills a statement of direction made in September 1991.

TCP/IP Version 2.1 for DOS will be available on Jan. 29, 1993. Refer to announcement A92-961 for detail and to the PRICES database for prices. Volume discounts are available.

IBM will be participating in the upcoming INTEROP Fall '92 Business Show. The INTEROP exhibition will be open October 28-30 and will be held at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.

The IBM booth will feature a combination of multivendor, multiprotocol and Open Systems solutions. Demonstrations of Networking products that integrate new telecommunications technologies and implement new application models such as DCE and APPC will be shown at the booth. Highlighted will be:

  • TCP/IP products - workstations and host
  • 6611 Router - including an APPN technology demonstration
  • FDDI and Frame Relay Solutions-RouteXpander/2, 6611 and IDNX
  • Local Area Hubs - including the 8250
  • PCMCIA adapters for T-R, Ethernet and Coax
  • 3174 APPN & APPC
  • Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to manage desktop
  • Multivendor Network Management AIX NetView/6000
  • NetView V2 R3
  • Network Carrier Interconnect
  • Lan Network Manager V1.1 and LANfocus Management/2

In addition, Sanjiv Ahuja product manager for the AIX NetView/6000 will be presenting "Multivendor Network Management - NV/6000" on Oct 28 from 2:00 to 2:50 pm, and Tom Hadley, Networking Systems Consultant will present "Intelligent Closets and Smart Hubs", on Oct 29 from 2:00 to 2:50 pm.

TCP/IP MVS V2R2 Demo Now Available in La Gaude

The La Gaude Open Systems Competence and Services TCP/IP demonstration network is now hooked to the world-wide IBM TCP/IP network, and can be accessed from any TCP/IP workstation on the network. TCP/IP MVS V2R2 use a 3172 Interconnect Controller and a SUN workstation, an AIX RS/6000, and OS/2 workstation are available on the local network.

One of the demonstrations is a remote Printing demo and a user's guide is available from:

  • Michel Peyraud, dept 3003 La Gaude (PEYRAUD at LGEPROFS)

A user's guide is also available from La Gaude, describing how easy the IBM TCP/IP product on OS/2 is to install. For information contact:
