Installing Warp 4 / Merlin on a laptop with a Panasonic PCMCIA CD-ROM drive, submitted by Eric Larson on 25 Nov 1996

How to Install Merlin on a Toshiba 100 CS using s Panasonic KHL-D740 PCMCIA CD-ROM drive.

Config.sys on diskette 1 must be modified by:

Rem out three lines

rem basedev=btscsi.add
rem basedev=fd16-700.add
rem ibm2scsi.add
  • AND* delete the associated driver (needed to make room for new drivers).

A copy of pcmcia.sys must be procured from the Merlin CD-ROM. This is easy for experienced OS/2 users (but less so for newbies).

Boot OS/2 to a command prompt (the install floppies allow this by F3 after disc 2).

Copy to a scratch subdirectory:

x:\os2image\disk_3\unpack2.exe
x:\os2image\disk_17\pcmciadd
x:\os2image\disk_18\pcmcia

Run the unpack command by:

unpack2 filename scratch.subdirectory

(unpack2 needs a target, else it fails)

I think unpack2.exe is a bound program, so the directions should work from DOS.

Tosh 100 owners copy IBM2TOS1.sys and PCMCIA.SYS from the scratch.directory to Diskette 1 of the install series. Owners of other laptops should substitute for IBM2TOS1.sys their appropriate driver.

IBM2SS01.SYS | IBM PS/55E, PS/2E, 4SLOTSCARDforISA, ThinkPad series except 720
IBM2SS02.SYS | ThinkPad720
IBM2AMB1.SYS | Ambra486SN425C
IBM2AST1.SYS | AST Ascentia800N, TBravo, TPowerExec
IBM2CAD1.SYS | AustinDSTN, Compuadd425TX
IBM2CMQ1.SYS | CompaqConcerto
IBM2MAT1.SYS | DELL Latitude, LatitudeXP, Panasonic
IBM2NEC1.SYS | NECVersa
IBM2ZOS1.SYS | Zeos
IBM2ZEN1.SYS | ZenithZ-lite425L
IBM2TOS1.SYS | Toshiba T3600, T4500, T4600, T4700, T4800
IBM2NCR1.SYS | NCRSafari

If your computer's name is not in the list, copy the IBM2TOS1.SYS

Go to the Panasonic site and procure 740OS2.exe (which has directions in broken English :-), run the exe to unzip and copy to diskette 1:

kme4os2.sys
kme4os2.add

Edit config.sys on Diskette 1 so the last four lines are:

basedev=pcmcia.sys /p
basedev=ibm2tos1.sys /s0=2 /c0=15
basedev=kme4os2.sys
basedev=kme4os2.add

I didn't figure out if our PCMCIA modem is important to the ibm2tos1.sys line (PCMCIA in top slot, CD-ROM in bottom slot).

Final diskette1 config.sys is:

Start the Merlin install using the modified Diskette 1 (0 and 2 haven't been touched). Twin-beeps during boot means the CD is happy. Go through the first phase of the install. Beeps indicate success.

The CD-ROM will be "lost" after the first HD reboot because pcmcia.sys is not in X:\os2\boot as expected for a *.sys file. Allow the boot to the configuration screens, then use the F3 escape to a command line. Copy from diskette 1 PCMCIA.sys to your boot drive (X:) in X:\OS2\Boot. The config.sys on the HD shouldn't have to be altered as it's pulled from the floppy (it looks weird at this intermediate stage of installation).

Remove the floppy, CAD reboot the system, and let OS/2 boot (meaning choose it on Boot Manager if available). You should end up at the same configuration screen you were for step 3 above (where you did F3 to get a command line). Install should go as expected from here on.

The first GUI set-up screen had a Panasonic LK-MC501 S listed as the CD-ROM and Adaptec 1460.... as the SCSI - these were left alone. Card services installed (guess) were Toshiba 4800 (seem to work).

The final (hard drive) config.sys is:
