Getting files in and out of OS/2 on virtualbox
« on: February 11, 2019, 08:29:00 am »
Greetings!
I'm reacquainting myself with OS/2 (V 4.5) via Virtualbox on my Mint Linux computer. While I had hoped to set it up for programming and some DOS work, it's usefulness is limited by my inability to put files on or take them off.  I can't access printers, usb drives, any files on the host system, and navigator is virtually unusable.  How have others worked around this problem?

Simplest is ftp. Next is Samba. There has also been work on shared folders that has problems as well as 2 implementations that others are better equipped to comment on.
Is networking working?

I can get on the internet, but I haven't had any luck using netbios over tcpip to access any shared folders on the host os (not that I'm any good at that).  Are you saying I can ftp to the host?

Hi Travis, welcome to the forum.

Just like Dave said, there are some options:
1) Using FTP
2) Using Samba
3) Using VirtualBox Unofficial Addons (Beta) that has some initial shared folder support. - Files   -    Forum discussion
4) Dropbox Netdrive Plugin  ( I personally haven't tried it)

I used Samba from the VM with good results, but I really don't know how to install it or configure it on Warp 4.52, since ArcaOS already package it on the installer.

You can install something like http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/apps/internet/ftp/server/ftpser_2.5.zip (recommended server) on OS/2 and ftp to it or install a server on Linux and use the OS/2 default ftp program (either cmd line or graphical).

Netbios is old and hard to get newer stuff to use, so you would need to install Samba, either the client, which would be easiest or the server.
To install the client, you will need to install a bunch of stuff, which is packaged as RPM's. Easiest is to install the Arca Noae Package Manager (ANPM) from here, https://www.arcanoae.com/resources/downloadables/arca-noae-package-manager/. Read the page for prerequisites.
This will also allow you to install GCC etc as well.
Samba itself is available at http://trac.netlabs.org/samba

Have fun and ask questions if needed.
