Panorama Maximum Resolution
« on: December 20, 2023, 12:28:59 am »
While we are on this topic I have a question.  What is the maximum resolution that can be displayed by panorama?  At the moment I am running 1920 x 1200 on a 28 inch monitor.  I would like to go to 2560 x 1600 on a 30 inch monitor.  Is that possible?

According to the wiki, max resolution that has been tested is 3840x2160x32bpp. You do need BIOS support.

Hello

I wanted to try 3840x2160 here but I was not able to make it work.

I have the Thinkpad T14s 1st Gen, It works with ArcaOS 5.1 and HDMI output works (after BIOS tweeking). I have a 4K TV here that can take a 3840x2160 resolution (I tested it with the same machine with Windows 11 and worked).

On ArcaOS I tried the "panoutil -c 3840 2160" but it will remain in 1920x1080 on the next reboot. (Check attached image)

If there is any additional trick you may suggest for 3840x2160 I will try it out. Or we can say that the T14s does not has 3840x2160 BIOS support?

If there is any additional trick you may suggest for 3840x2160 I will try it out.You can search the Mantis ticket about that from me a few years ago. Basically before playing games with custom resolution settings (you shouldn't do that) check what your hardware offers. I think it's listed in a testlog but there's also some util IIRC.

It depends on -
- connection type to your monitor (DisplayPort prefered is capable of all relevant resolutions, DVI can not do more than 1920 x 1440, HDMI varies a lot between different versions, analog RGB can't do very much probably no more than 1920x1200 or something like that)
- your monitors capabilities (read out and offered to the driver via EDID interface)
- your graphic card
- and most important the BIOS in your graphic card.

Sometimes it needs additional work from David to get it to work on your system though.

3840x2160 is running here since some time via PCIe ATI graphic card and the help of David (who included the fixes in 1.18 I think).

I've been using 3840x2160 on most of my computers for about a year.

Connection: DisplayPort
Monitor: LG 30 inch monitor
Computers: Lenovo desktop and laptop models

For laptops without DisplayPort, I use a Lenovo USB-c to DisplayPort adapter cable
To see a list of supported resolutions, use panoutil -i

Supported resolutions are the result of a negotiation between BIOS and the monitor (and your graphics card, if you have one; I haven't used one for a long, long time)

We may want to survey monitors and list their capabilities in the OS/2 World Wiki.

Hello Again.

Is there anything specific on the testlog report that can tell me if 3840x2160 is supported for my BIOS? I have it on the wiki, but some scrolling is required to get it.

I will check your other suggestions tonight.

is the most relevant part. It shows that you are using the UEFI emulation. No clue if this has additional limitations. But it does not show how you have attached your monitor. If this is a notebook there's nothing you can do about of course. But if it's a desktop system then you really need DP. And don't attach another cable during boot in parallel, only DP nothing else. If no DP is available then try HDMI. Remember only one cable attached during boot.

You can compare what I've here -

Edit - I see you're talking about a notebook. For such you can only play with BIOS options. No clue if it helps. Especially in UEFI mode. But you can try to select in BIOS something like 'External Display only'. For ArcaOS it's not possible to drive both displays (internal and external) at the same time. You need the right display at boot up (and only that one enabled). At least I can't get it to work on my notebooks. But Neil is much more experienced in this for sure.

Thanks Andi B.

Yes this is a Thinkpad T14s (laptop), and I don't have display port here.

What I would try tonight is:
- update Panorama to 1.19 (just in case)
- Generate TestLog with the Laptop showing video from the HDMI output with the TV attached.
- Generate "panoutil -i"

Maybe if something over "1920x1080" shows up on the logs, there is hope.

Martin,

The HDMI cable matters here. More specifically, the cable itself must be designed to comply with a specific HDMI specification. Beyond that, there are real differences between 'Standard HDMI' and 'High Speed HDMI', latter one being capable fo 4K resolutions for example, while the former is limtted to 720p or 1080i (TV speak here to simplify).

Here is a nice, quick and simple article tht summarizes it all => https://www.cdw.com/content/cdw/en/articles/hardware/hdmi-cable-buying-guide-learn-all-you-need-to-know-about-hdmi-cables.html

Thanks Dariuz, that is good to know.

I can not say that my HDMI cable is the best quality, but my only reference here is that the same machine (TP T14s with Dual Boot) with Windows 11, with this same cable, is producing "3840x2160" output through the HDMI port to the 4K TV.
I don't know if that is enough to say that the cable can hold here.

Oh, I'm sorry but I missed that.

In that case, you are good-to-go, and this would appear to be an OS/2 matter.

I'm curious, does Panorama offer the functionality to capture your EDID and dump it out? If the answer is YES, you could certainly do that and parse it through a number of EDID decoders.

Ultimately, assuming the BIOS is not the issue here, the reason why this matters is that a video device driver would want to know what the output device is capable of displaying, and EDID is the record structure meant to facilitate that communication.

So again, assuming Panorama is reading EDID (which I believe it is), it should conclude based on that record what the max capability of your display is, and presuming that your video hardware is capable of addressing that space, it would proceed to use that configuration.

I have a boat-load of SNAP experience, including building custom EDID records and flashing those one displays, unfortunately I do not know the Panorama side of this.

Hello

I tried again, and no luck getting "3840x2160".

Booted ArcaOS 5.1 with HDMI output enabled (the video was only shown on the 4K TV). I generated the logs there, but on the logs there are no clues about "3840x2160".

panoutil -i shows:

Hello

Sorry Ivan, I noticed I hi-jacked your thread.

At the moment I'm experiencing that if you BIOS does not support that resolution I can not make a 4K monitor work with Panorama, even that Windows 11 can (Because it has native driver).  (If someone wants to correct me I will more than happy to keep trying.)

Ivan, can you run "panoutil -i" on your machine to see what it shows?

I would it express in other words - the BIOS offers Panorama only resolutions it thinks the 'monitor in conjunction with the current connection' (DP, DVI, HDMI, ...) is capable. Then Panorama tries to select the predefined BIOS mode (resolution) which matches best OR tries to patch on of the BIOS modes to a better resolution.

I'm not sure if I got it correct, but to my understanding Panorama is sometimes capable to patch (overwrites) one of the modes in some BIOSes. That's the reason why I see a slight chance that there could be a difference when you use traditional BIOS mode instead UEFI. Currently you're running the 'UEFI BIOS emulation' driver not the real BIOS. Of course I could be totally wrong. Maybe when you open a ticket David will explain to you the real truth.

Hi Martin.

Panoutil -i gives a long list of resolutions so I have attached it as pano.txt.
