Setup & Installation / 1TB HDD and GUID Partiton Table
« on: September 23, 2015, 05:53:55 pm »
Hi.

I preferred to do a new thread since my case is a little bit different. I want to have dual boot Win10 and eCS 2.2.
Now I'm stuck on the GUID Partition Table (GPT) error for both disks (1TB and 16GB).

Here I post some screenshots of the eCS 2.2 Installer error and a Partition Mess I have in Windows.

There is not easy way out, right? Do I need to wipe everything, create partitions with eCS, and install eCS first and after that install Win10?

I also wonder (just wonder, I know it is hard to fix) which drivers should be updated or created to have "GPT Friendly" eCS.

Applications / How to install from external USB CD/DVD?
« on: September 16, 2015, 05:35:15 pm »
Hi.

I got my hands on a Thinkpad Yoga 14 (No DVD) and I'm trying to install eCS 2.2 beta 2 for the fun of it.
I'm using an external Samsung USB bluray as DVD Player (the ecs image is on DVD)

- I activated UEFI legacy support on the BIOS.
- The eCs CD boots, I can access the boot menu.
- I notice that ACPI, AHCI driver will be loaded.
- I select USB DVD drive on the option.
- Press F10 to continue and boot.

But when it starts loading it give me the message "Insert the eComStation CD....."

I thought that enabled the USB CD and AHCI was the trick but it is not working for me. Am I missing something ?

Applications / Experiment: bWarp - Broken Warp / Removing the stuff.
« on: September 15, 2015, 12:23:59 am »
Hi.

As the next step for my older experiment (aWarp) I created bWarp.

The goal of this experiment is to create a reduced version of OS/2 Warp 4.52 (based on aWarp) on a VirtualBox VM that will include only the necessary for:

- Boot the OS
- Run PM and WPS
- Run cmd and PM applications
- Ability to run REXX scripts
- DHCP working
- Ping www.google.com
- CD/DVD Support
- JFS / HPFS Support
- E.EXE and Warpcenter is still there

You can found information about this experiment at:
- BWarp
- BWarp Directory/Files Structure
- BWarp Config.sys

So, for the moment the OS is stable on the VM, and OS/2 had been reduced to a bunch of vital files to work, but of course "It is broken", it will not run programs that requires some of the non-regular OS/2 components.

Applications / Experiment: aWarp - Atrocious Warp - Moving Paths
« on: August 21, 2015, 06:17:16 pm »
Hi

Some days ago I started my experiment called aWarp based on a VM and as a extensions on my other experiment "Experiment: Moving the OS/2 Directory Structure"

So the goal of this experiment was to create an OS/2 Warp 4.52 (with fixpacks) VM machine on VirtualBox and moving the locations of all files of the OS/2 components to a directory structure that I choose. It was basically to move the directories, updated CMD files and INI files.

You can found information about this experiment at:
- AWarp
- AWarp Directory/Files Structure
- AWarp Config.sys

People may like it or not, but this is just an experiment, there is no need to freak out or start running to the street like it is the end of the world.

ISSUES.

I found these issues or stoppers while doing this.

1) MPTS.EXE is broken. Even that I updated IBMLVL.INI (IBM_LANX -> PATH to C:\OS2\SYSTEM\IBMCOM) the GUI is not loading correctly. It loads the Multi-Protocol Tranport Services window in blank.

2) UNICODE.SYS has hardcoded the path of C:\LANGUAGE. I don't know a solution for this maybe:
 - An alternative for UNICODE.SYS can be produced
 - A binary patch for UNICODE.SYS can be produced to have a more flexible path option.

3) Has anybody tried to consolidate the INI's of OS/2 in a single directory? I haven't tried that yet.

There may be a lot of other things are broken that I'm not using right now.

Suggestions and help on this three issues that I'm having is welcome.

Hi

I want to see if it can be possible for me to travel to WarpStock 2015 this year. I don't have budget to make that trip, since OS2World run for free, this is why I want to ask you for your help.

I need to get $1704.00 for the trip. This year I have the issue that I had to stay on the Drury Hotel since there are no more cheaper hotels around like last year WarpStock. But if I can share the room with some one maybe I can reduce the cost from $1704 to $1484, but if I share a room I must warn the other person that I speak a devilish language on my R.E.M. (just kidding).

So I will like to ask you collaboration again to my paypal account "martin@os2world.com".

My idea of visiting WarpStock is:
- Document the conferences with photos.
- Stream the Video conference (Just like I did last year) if there a good internet connection.
- Record whatever video I can to be published on YouTube for all of us.

If by any chance I cannot make it to WarpStock I will:
1) Return the money to the people that donate it
or
2) Donate it to an open source OS/2 project.

If you want to collaborate with me please donate to my paypal account: martin@os2world.com

I also want to thanks to all the sponsors of last year.

Applications / Firefox 31.8.0 Beta 5 - First Impressions
« on: July 24, 2015, 07:40:41 pm »
Hi

Firefox 31.8.0 Beta 5 is working very good for the moment. It is running very stable.

My only issue is that the special characters stuff are not supported yet (like Github page), just like in the older firefox.

Will it make sense to try firefox marketplace? Are those OS independent apps ? will it run on OS/2?

Everybody is welcome to share the first impressions... if you find an ugly bug, report it.

Utilities / Change file "Type" property in batch
« on: July 23, 2015, 10:56:53 pm »
Hi.

I want to change the file "type" property on some OS/2 files but I want to do it in batch instead of doing it one by one. (Check image)

Is there any utility that will allow me for example, send a command to remove to blank the "Type" property of the *.dll files in a directory. After that to send other command to put the "Dynamic Link Library" type to all the *.dll files. ??

Any tools out there to do this?

Hi

There seems to be some necessity for the community to express what should be the software priorities on the OS2-eCS platform. But I know that many will jump to say "DRIVERS !!" and I don't want to discuss that this time, since I think that we need to see what Arca Noae will deliver on the future.

So, the question to brainstorm is "Which are the platform software priorities excluding drivers?".

There was some old 2014 discussion summary here, but you are all free to discuss what should be a priority.

Events / Buy at Amazon and Help WarpStock
« on: June 10, 2015, 07:47:51 pm »
Hi.

There was a formal announcement long time ago, but I think it is a good time to remember the community this topic.

You can help WarpStock (USA)  to raise funds for the event by buying things at Amazon. It will not cost you anything.

1) The only thing you need to do is visit the link:
http://www.amazon.com/ref=as_li_wdgt_ex?&linkCode=wsw&tag=warpstockcorp-20

2) Shop everything from there.

Please, if you have someone on your family or friends that shops a lot at Amazon, please share the link  :)

Applications / USBLib (USBCalls, USBResmg, USBJoy) license?
« on: June 10, 2015, 02:17:57 am »
Hi

I need to solve this mystery (little mystery). I need to know which is the license (terms of use) of USBLib (USBCalls, USBResmg, USBJoy).

For what I read on netlabs ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/snapshots/usb/usb_20070121.zip the original author is Markus Montkowski and he released it under the "Aladdin Free Public License"

FYI:
Quote
Aladdin Free Public License

The license was derived from the GNU General Public License, but differs on two key points:
- The source code must be included with any software distribution.
- The software may not be sold, including any fees involved with distribution.

From Wikipedia.

But checking the source code under /drivers/ directory there are code that is licensed by IBM. (It does not specify an IBM license, only AS IS).

So, I honestly do not know if the USBLib project should be under "Aladdin Free Public License" the whole package, or it is a project with different licenses.  I want to know if there had been license change with time approved by the author, or other authors by any chance.

Comments are welcome, but please don't ask "why do you want to know this?" it is obviously that I want to know which license applies to this project. I had a discussion some months ago with a community member that told me that it should not be "Aladdin Free Public License" but he failed to explain why.

Applications / IBM DDK Drivers - screen01, kbdbase, clock01, print01
« on: June 09, 2015, 12:03:12 am »
Hi

Checking the IBM DDK license I can say that:
* The source code of DDK (IBM Code) can not be open sourced.
* DDK Customers can create freeware version (not open source) of the "screen01, kbdbase, clock01" since it is part of the "IBM Code" on those CDs.

So, I will like to know if someone is interested to create/build some "test-beta-AS IS- no support - under your own risk" drivers for "screen01, kbdbase, clock01, print01" and turn them freeware for all use. I want to test a "non-IBM" produced drivers on my experimental VM.

(Maybe it is already done, I know that a freeware print01 is on hobbes)

Hi.

I have this idea/suggestion for Arca Noae since they are doing the hard driver development on this platform.

Why don't create a "very short" and dynamic list of "approved hardware" that can change once a year, but something that is very short and limited, not big lists of hardware support, just one or two of each kind. I will call it "THE LIST" (joke) because people likes branding.(/joke).

For example, (this is just an example, I don't want to discuss Wifi cards or other specific hardware on this thread, I'm putting this device only as example-I don't have this card and I don't know if it is good or bad, I just noticed that is shipped on newer Thinkpads). Arca Noae gets a new device (that is no more than three years old) like the "Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 7265NGW (NGFF)Card 802.11ac", which is easy to get on ebay ($25) and other places, for his developer David (and maybe others). They make it work with their drivers and "approve" that this hardware works with the Arca Noae's driver package their are offering and put it on "THE LIST".

So it will not mean that the "Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 7265NGW (NGFF)Card 802.11ac" is the only device supported by the driver, since many other can run other supported hardware with the same driver, but it will mean this card is a device that is being use and held by Arca Noae's developer for the current year, and will make it a good suggestion for someone that wants to change its wifi card to select this one. (while it stays on THE LIST).

The idea about this list is:
- "THE LIST" will be short, so it does not became a big task to maintain it.
- New Hardware. The focus is not having a long list, it is to have new hardware on it .
- Arca Noae will update the list according to their will, since hardware is changing fast and sometimes it is very hard to maintain the legacy.
- It does not mean that only this hardware works with the drivers, it mean that Arca Noae uses this hardware for testing and on his developers.

Maybe they can add "THE LIST" to the "OS/2 & eCS drivers and software package" product information. Since it is a product made of drivers, it will be logical to know which hardware is supported.

Like I told this is only an idea.

Hi

I don't know how I get into this subject by searching on the Internet. On 1998 I was on the University minding my own dumb business and without much knowledge of the OS/2 community. I knew OS/2 at that time, I used Warp 3 but I was not an active member and I never knew about this, so I post it as "funny fact" or "blast from the past".

While on 1998 Lou Gerstner already decided to pull the plug on OS/2, we didn't know about it. IBM didn't go straight to everyone and told us Lou's strategy.  Ralph Nader from the other side requested IBM to give away OS/2 source code (or give OS/2 for free) since he noticed that Microsoft was an evil monopoly.

Ralph Nader told "IBM should consider following the Netscape example and release the source code for OS2, and permit computer users to modify and freely distribute copies of OS2."

At that moment some journalist (ex:  Paul Thurrott) disqualified Ralph almost saying that he does not nothing about computer software.  Some OS/2 developer company came out to defend IBM telling that IBM was doing a great job with ISVs on 1998.

Ralph is defined on wikipedia as:
"Ralph Nader (/ˈneɪdər/, Arabic: رالف نادر; born February 27, 1934)[4][5] is an American political activist of Lebanese origin, as well as an author, lecturer, and attorney. Areas of particular concern to Nader include consumer protection, humanitarianism, environmentalism, and democratic government.[6]"

He was a five-time candidate for President of the United States with the democrats... and I don't remember him winning :)

I do not live on the US, maybe people that remember him have their own political opinions on him. Maybe he was a crazy democrat that wanted all Americans to live naked and smoke pot (joke, I don't really know anything about him). Even the organization he created (Public Citizen) disassociate away from him.

But today (Ralph Nader is 81 years old) maybe I can say that he had some reason after all.

I just put some links about what I can find about this subject on the wiki: http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Ralph_Nader. I want to read more sources about this subject, just for the fun of it.

Article Discussions / How to improve the installer of OS/2?
« on: May 22, 2015, 12:14:07 am »
This looks like an interesting discussion topic that ecomstation.ru is asking.

For what I see on other OSes, it seems that is a tendency to simplify the install procedure. The user no longer choose what should be installed or not on the OS.

It seems that the standard options on OS installation to ask the user is:
a) Easy Install, grabs all the free unpartitioned space on the HDD and install the OS there.
or
b) Advanced install, gives you the option to install the OS on the partition you choose and options to resize partitions.

And that's all...

Of course that there are installers that allows the user to create their own personalized installer of the OS to create their own install image.

I'm not sure if it is right or wrong for the OS2-eCS platform to have an GUI installer without asking which software or drivers to install, but "that menu that I forgot the name" that loads before the GUI installer when you can select which drivers to boot the installation CD is a must have.

If there is some interest maybe it can be good to discuss the idea. What can it be improved on the installer?
