Supporting thread for the GNASH open source Flash 7 (http://www.os2world.com/content/view/338/71/) bounty. The original and old bounty thread can be found here (http://www.os2world.com/cgi-bin/ultraboard/UltraBoard.cgi?action=Read&BID=83&TID=107&SID=).
Paul has earlier made a claim for the bounty money for the GNASH porting; but I also noticed that people have requested that it would be nice to get it as a plugin to browser. So the question here is what is the current status of the released code and what are the issues still to be solved?
And hopefully during the time that Paul spends to fix some more issues that we see some more USD added to the existing value.
Hi folks,
well, ehhh... I didn't quite understand, I'm afraid... what are we talking about?
Whether or not Paul should be allowed the bounty?
In that case - heck - YES!
It was about "porting GNASH". And that's what he did, didn't he?
It was NOT about bugfixing GNASH or extending its features on the OS/2 platform.
So for gods sake: HE DESERVES IT.
And BTW: Paul will not stop working on something just because he got the prize. That's not Paul. :-)
As for the plugin stuff: People ae free to sponsor a new bounty for that, if that is really desired, but for now I see the bounty "fulfilled".
Regards,
Thomas
Paul will of cource receive his Bounty claim for GNASH, the main reason for not sending him the money yet is we wanted more contributions from the community, if possible. After all, this Bounty was very underpaid!
One of the problems with Bounties is that many users want things to happen, but they are not willing to contribute with fundings, in same cases even the suggesting person has not put a single dollar into his wish. We have no right to except that things shall fall down from the sky. ;)
Personally I am very impressed by Paul, how can hi manage to make so many things happen with so little feedback?

Personally, I gotta say, that one of the things that pisses me off the most about the OS/2/eComStation community is the general complete lack of feedback.
I get download reports from Mensys (who kindly host download.smedley.info), so I know how many times things have been loaded, but I get extremely little feedback. You'll notice some ports on my site that haven't been updated in a long time - generally this means that there's been so little feedback, that I can't be bothered updating the port.
Of course if it's something that I use myself, then it tends to get updates as soon as I notice a new version.
Anyway, rant off :)
Cheers/2
Paul.
Hi Paul,
I am not surpriced that you experience the same things that other people that is trying to do things also do. It's not good that this community is so bad concerning communication. I will not complain myself since I am not involved in development but I have experienced the same feeling when doing translations, and I have done a lot of them. If I had received feedback, it had probably resulted in better translations!?
I think something has to be done about this bad habits in this society, otherwise it's possible to lose the few hard working developers that is left, and that must not happen. :(
//Björn
Hi folks,
...so you are waiting for more money to give to Paul? This is fine with me - I'll care about that. Check back the bounty in a couple of minutes. ;-) It's not because you asked for it, it's rather something I was thinking about myself already during the last days. It's a shame. People are great when finding excuses for not paying 5 bucks "because I have no credit card", "...paypal", "...bank acoount".... bla, bla...
Why not come up with the idea of "feedbackware"?
People will get a "free" license onyl if they provide "valueable" feedback, e.g. system setup, config.sys, etc. they are running the program with. No feedback - no usage. :-)

Thomas
Hi all,
as I can't stay to see folks like Paul (who provide ongoing support and efforts to the "community") suffering from the shame of being not rewarded for it, I have raised the bounty a little (bucks should arrive in a couple of minutes).
I can't help but repeating it again:
I understand that many people don't have the (financial) means to express their thankfulness or at least to support developers. But a simple "hey, thanks!" should do however. If people could provide additional information like "It runs here and I'm using eCS 1.2 GA" that's already a valueable information, isn't it (to some extent; at least better than nothing).
Personally, I don't really use any of the things that Paul is porting to our OS (to my knowledge) but I'm pretty sure that a lot of stuff I'm using wouldn't exist without his work - because other peoples work is based upon his. "losing Paul" might not have any direct impact on most people's daily usage but it impacts 3rd party software that uses Pauls work.
And BTW:
I love that part where he says "what pisses me off the most...". That's it!!
I would love to see more people talking like that, maybe this provides a crispier and sharper image about the REAL LIFE situation of that so-called community.

Thomas
Can't agree more so I added some for dollars as well; since I think this port is quite important for OS2 as well.
Hi Kim,
just noticed the *new* amount of the bounty, and - ahhh - this looks FAR better now. ;-)

Thomas
Here is an suggestion (http://www.os2world.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,63/topic,145.0/) that Björn Söderström talked about earlier regarding some kind of starter fee for the bounties.
Hi Kim,
interesting... will reply to that in the given thread...

Thomas,
You express my feelings too about Pauls, and others peoples work! It's a shame for this society that we don't appreciate developers time and effort better than we seems to do? A friendly mail can be a good start from a user.
You are correct that most users probably don't use Pauls ports directly, but it's a good habit to think a little longer than you can see! I have started to use Kdiff3 since I need a tool for filecomparing when I perform translations. It's not on the bounty system but I have told Paul that I am grateful that hi did that port available for us.
P.S. I have also made a contribution for GNASH.
I like your idea about "feedbackware", it should be part of good manners.
//Björn
I have to express a slightly differing opinion in this thread. I understand the frustration and the need of appreciation, but I think that the moralistic line in this thread is just leading to more bitterness and also a somewhat whining tone. We can't force appreciation, though we can try to think more of developers need to get feedback and appreciation.
I think the only cure for this bitterness and frustration is that developers charge their products or/and work. Lets say you charge 10$ for one download of a port(price of course depending on different things). Ten downloads means 100$. You could call it "cheapware" or something. I would certainly pay 10$ for a port or program I need or like when there is an immediate connection between paying and getting. I get satisfied and so is the developer, we don't have to rely on good manners or actions to not be ashamed. The voulontary payment will is a to weak force and misses that direct connection. If you want people to try software for you, Warpcafés "feedbackware" maybee is the right thing, but I wonder if that is possible with ports of eg GPL licensed programs?
AFAIK you can take any charge you want for a GPL- licensed program if you just attach the sourcecode?

I too contributed some small funding to Paul - though not through the Bounty System. I did it directly from his page because I use at least 3 or 4 of the ports he maintains (though I have downloaded quite a few more and not had time to play with the rest yet). Perhaps I should have done it through the Bounty System, but the funds I sent were a general "Thank You" for all his work, not just the work on GNASH - and as always Paul was gracious and quick to send a note of thanks (humourously, for what amounted to
my note of thanks to him!! ;D )!
As I have a bit more to contribute, I'll be sending it through the Bounty System to those involved. And... as I have more time, I'll send Paul and others feedback in the hopes it will help - and am always willing to test whatever I can when needed!
-Robert
Hi Robert,
of course you were right when donating to him directly, as it was not tied to the specific bounty!
And from that perspective... I fear that my attempt to sponsor "Paul" by sponsoring the "GNASH" bounty might have missed the intention. But that is neglectable, as at the end of the day Paul gets some money in an "official" way (so that other people are aware of it) and that's all I wanted. ;-)
In general, I think we must try to clearly separate bounties from feedback or, to put it that way - don't use bounties as a way of feedback. ...and by saying "we must try" I actually mean myself. ;-)
At some point, it is getting difficult: The bounty system is a very tentative way of giving feedback in a "public" way so that everyone can see that someone has done something for a developer. I think we also need "public" ways of providing *feedback* - e.g. when I say "thank you, Paul" it should be visible to everyone, maybe this encourages other users to do the same.
Perhaps many folks out there might think "A developer won't care if I say only <thanks>..." and that is something that can be changed by letting everyone else see your thankfulness... even (and especially) without money.
One of such ways of public feedback/thanks is an award - like the os/2 world awards. We should have such things (or better additional, different things) on a more frequent basis...?
Oops. Getting off-topic too much, I think I should make this an article...
Greetings
Thomas
And here is another OT of this thread. But, another way to provide feedback is to use the comment feature that is available in all news articles, if you haven't noticed, then check the lower right corner - if it says (0) Comments then there is no comments to the posted articles.
Hopefully if people finds it hard to post an e-mail to a developer then use the comment feature also I know sometimes that some developers keeps their e-mail addresses out of the documentation due to spam. For me a comment to an article could as well be a mini-review of the application itself with a fancy screenshoot.

Wow - I didn't mean to spark such a big OT discussion :)
Note that I really do appreciate people's contributions, whether it be through the links at my site or through the Bounty system - it's nice to know that people appreciate the stuff that I do.
I didn't mean to come across as whinging - although I am English so it does happen sometimes :P (ie whinging pom - probably only the Aussies will get this!!) - just expressing that if developers don't hear about people using the port, then they may assume that's because nobody is using them and stop updating them.
My focus on updating ports is:
a) something I use myself
b) stuff I receive feedback on or find out that people ARE actually using
Other developers I've spoken to feel the same way - they spend many hours working on a piece of software, then receive no feedback. I'm lucky in that most of my ports are hosted on download.smedley.info which is at Mensys and they provide me download statistics so that I can at least see that things are being downloaded and presumably they're being used...
Anyway... back to work :)
Cheers,
Paul.
Hi Kim,
RIGHT! That's true, good point.
( Funny enough, I wanted to do a comment on something yesterday but wasn't logged in. I was taken to the login, logged in, got back to the comment link, but when clicking it, I was redirected back to the "you're not logged in" screen. Hmm... then I found out that it might be a browser (cache, whatever) issue and shut down/restarted my browser, did my login FIRST, and THEN tried to use the comment-link. It works. )
Using the comments links however makes sense only, if the article/news was submitted by the author himself. If one of our news editors / admins is doing the announcement, we can still provide "thanks" visible to anyone (at os2world.com) but perhaps not the author himself.
Still, that's a good idea - will do that in the future. ;-)
Regards,
Thomas
I agree that if the author hasn't posted the information themself but still I know from the old forum that sooner or later the author of an application usually finds the way to the comments and reads them. Might not be that they actually answer any of the question, suggestions or negative comments or what ever posted. But, suddenly there is actually some kind of feedback. Also I think that posting comments on a site, in a forum, might be bit easier since it's kind of more anonymous, ie you're not facing or speaking directly to the reciever.
It's all about getting over that there are no stupid question and the only stupid questions are the ones that you didn't ask. As well, I think that the tone in this forum is kind of nice and open minded, at least it's what I think, and this hopefully helps out a bit to take the first step to post comment or something at all. I know quite a few people that got them self burnt when posting questions or suggestions in usenet groups - so far I think we done a good work to avoid that within this forum.

I'd give you tons of feedback, but I don't think I actually use any of your ports. :-( I have a lot of ported UNIX stuff in my software collection, of course, but it's mostly stuff like Links, slrn, pine, mc, an older XFree86 plus various apps (GIMP, XV, etc.), etc.
I just tried gnash on the oddtodd collection, and I didn't achieve playback. Here one of many test files that don't play on my system -- http://www.oddtodd.com/laidoff2.swf

Ouch! This morning we recieved another 200 USD to this bounty (!) and the total value is currently now 370 USD and that is the highest amount that we so far have had on a single bounty!

Yeah - it's pretty incredible! I'm currently working on an updated build of Gnash based on the latest CVS code. I forwarded Neil's problem to the Gnash mailing list - that problem should be fixed in CVS - so we'll soon see :)
I have two weeks off work starting in a couple of weeks - hopefully I'll have some time then to look at a Firefox plugin for Gnash.
Cheers,

OK, I tried the 20070713 version of gnash, and it doesn't crash anymore, but neither does it go beyond the loading screen. However, I tried episode 2, and that appears to load and play just fine, at least on my laptop.

Not every flash cartoon on the site plays, but it's really cool that some do. Thanks for the interesting port.

Hi Neil - thanks for the feedback. People do need to understand that not only is the OS/2 port of gnash a work in progress, but Gnash itself is also a work in progress - there are things that don't currently work in the OS/2 port that also don't work with Gnash on other platforms.
It would be good if people could post compatability problems with Gnash/2 and specific swf files to the Gnash newsgroup so that we can confirm if the problem is os specific or cross platform.
Cheers,
Paul.
Just a few lines about the Gnash Mailing Lists/Newsgroups
Gnash has three mailing lists hosted at gnu.org. Archives of these lists are stored at http://mail.gnu.org/pipermail/:
- gnash-dev@gnu.org is for discussion of gnash development, porting to new platforms, and ideas for the future. This is the best list for technical questions. This list has moderate volume. To subscribe, go to http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/gnash-dev.
- gnash@gnu.org is for discussion of Gnash. This list addresses ideas for the future, general gnash usage or problems, and so on. New alpha and stable releases are announced here. This list typically has a low volume. To subscribe, go to http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/gnash.
- gnash-commit@gnu.org is where summaries of changes committed to the CVS repository are automatically posted. This list has a fairly high volume. If you wish to see these changes as they happen, subscribe at http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/gnash-commit.
- #gnash on irc.freenode.net The #gnash channel on irc.freenode.net is where many of the developers hang out.
Announcements about Gnash and most other GNU Software are made on <info-gnu@gnu.org>.
Well, since Paul has made a claim on this bounty I guess that it's time to see if we can close this bounty based on that everybody has the same opinion.
Hello,
is it planned to merge the os/2port code addtions to the source into the Gnash project CVS?
Do we have a second /backup person/environment to recompile the current CVS at any time to get the same results?
kind regards
Rainer

Yes it is planned to get the OS/2 changes into the Gnash CVS - I just need to tidy up the configure script changes - which I hope to do next week when I'm on holidays :)
I hope that everybody can agree to that Paul made an excellent work with this bounty and that we now would like to fullfill our part and pay out the bounty money to him.

hello all Gnash fans,
one off the test results is,
some flash video are obviously bundled with the URL of the calling side.
The SWF does all check at runtime.
This check does not run succesfully with Gnash as external player
see Gnash bug at http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?20740
We will need to run a peer test with Linux and Firefox and Gnash Plugin.
Depending on the result - probably it is a vote for the OS/2 Port of the Gnash Plugin

Last night I got the plugin compiling, and it does show in about:plugins. Currently, it crashes the browser on going to a page that has flash content - so I need to do some debugging :)
I also wanted to extend a THANK YOU to all those who contributed to the Gnash bounty - it really was a powerful motivation factor to work on it, as particularly when I first started looking at Gnash, there were some real challenges. Also thanks to the OS/2 World guys for putting the Bounty system in place in the first place!
Great work! How goes the plugin?

Hello Paul,
any progress on the plugin
Unfortunately not - basically due to a lack of time. I have a few days off in February that may provide the necessary time to a) learn more about c++ b) learn more about mozilla plugins c) implement something that works.

Hello Paul,
thanks for your timely answer.
Looking forward to your February output :-)
I have done the "offline" test with Gnash, reported bugs to the Gansh project and get the fixes with your last built.
The work around to play Your Tube videos with "Batch" Gansh does not work any more
--> the way of embedding the call to the video on the WEB Page has changed!
No you Tube video with Gansh and with the 7 R73 OS/2 plugin --> no sound.
To make any progress - the OS/2 version of the plugin is required.
kind regards
Rainer
