Browser can't open sites when used with dial-up

On 2 HDs (one w/ eCS 2.0rc4, other w/OS/2 latest) that have wireless working, when I use my dial-up connection, Seamonkey 2.0.1 after looking for some time responds with "Browser can't find site ...." On both of these drives I initially was able to connect using dial-up, but after using wireless to connect I lost dial-up connectivity.

I have a 3rd HD with a clone of the OS2 setup, and dial-up still works on it. I have not tried to connect using wireless on it.

I have tried 1) restoring ibmcom, mptn, and tcpip from a backup. 2) compared files in those 3 folders with the dial-up working HD, found 1 difference, used the working file on the non working system. 3) Looked in MPTS Network Adapters and Protocol Services (No Network Adapter, both with and without tcpip protocol and genmac 2915 w/ tcpip 1) 4)Looked in the tcpip notebook, nothing entered 5) weeks of reboots changing config.sys to the point I've lost track 6) Reading what I could find in the various 'readme' files and trying to get a cursory understanding of how tcpip works. All I have is fragments of disjointed info.

My previous 15 years of OS/2 usage has been limited to dial-up and stand alone. I did have one period I tried to get broadband to work with dsl to ethernet with limited success. The then complicated process motivated me to stay with dial-up as long as I could. So I am really weak in networking

So .....
1) What does it take to get the Browser to work with dial-up?
2) Failing a simple obvious (to someone) solution, perhaps someone could point me in the right direction with a brief explanation of what the browser looks for when directed to a site. I'm guessing there is a tcpip layer or two that takes care of it. What is the difference between (to tcpip) dial-up and lan/wlan/wan?

Hi Steve,

First up, what does your resolve2 file say? (in mptn\etc)

From my use of dialup years ago that was the key file because it gave the addresses of the name servers of the dialup provider.

That being said what was your problem with dsl?  For myself I couldn't wait for adsl to get to the village - it beats dialup hands down.  My provider supplies the dsl modem with an ethernet port which links it to an 8 port switch and thence on to my boxes at home.  Since the initial setup years ago I've added a wireless router just to allow me to use the network with friends notebooks.

I do have vague memories of people having problems with dsl by their trying to connect it directly to a computer but could never understand their trying to do it the hard way.

One other question, if your browser stops opening sites does that mean you have lost all net access? (try to ping a site).

Ivan, i did check RESOLV and RESOLV2. On both connecting and non-connecting drives the addresses were the same. RESOLV2 was not the address of my DNS. I changed it to the DNS address (which was in the RESOLV file), no success

I meant to explain why I still use dial-up, thinking most would think, 'why bother?' I'm a minimalist, i find when I get a newer computer, dial-up is adequate for my needs, discourages me from looking at porn ;) and has been very reliable. Also cuts down on phone solicitors. It appears that wifi is nearly ubiquitous and it really works quite well now on OS/2. I suspect that when I get broadband I will use ethernet out of the router; I pick up about 10 signals from neighbors in my suburban home. So I'm a little concerned that me a problem, because I don't understand how the browser or ? configures for different sources.

Anyway, I did try pinging, email, NIST time server, nothing works.

Are resolv and resolv2 for different connections?

My isp assigns an ip address each time I phone in (ipcp_up remote?). The ipcp_up local addresses are different by 1 in the last field (.7 v .8)  but I don't know of a way to change it. I will watch to see if they are always the same. I doubt they are. Thanks for your time, Ivan. Steve

Well, I had a modicum of success through a fluke operation. Some little subconscious thing clicked as I watched the browser try to connect to a site for the nth time. I put it in offline mode and then switched it online again. It started working, albeit very slowly. It was connected at 52k, and mode confirmed that the port was set at that. I changed the mru from default? of 256 to 1500, the standard as I've read for ppp. Blanked out net mask from 255.255.255.0. Some improvement, but still only about 1/4 the speed that the same browser (Seamonkey 2.0.1) works with the OS/2 dial-up (which I find acceptable for text and jpg files).

Although my problem is managed for now, if anyone has some insight into what is happening with turning the browser offline and then back, I would like to hear it. Maybe it will help me understand tcpip a little better. Steve
