Firefox upgrade issues from 2.0.0.13

Need some advice.

I've stuck with Firefox 2.0.0.13 for a long time - it worked.

Now I seem to have mysterious failures and weird results (missing images, flashing screens, strobe light like effects, and abends) which encourage me to upgrade.

I've noticed that most, if not all failures take place after visiting sites which have popups (blocked by adblockplus) or Flash (which I can't view) .  These sites appear to cause the screen to blink and later on I start having more problems and sometimes and eventual abend of Firefox.

When I install a new version (after erasing the old firefox)  Firefox never downloads a screen.  No matter what I point to, I get an immediate "Done" but nothing has downloaded.  So I've not been able to proceed further.

This has happened last Dec., Jan, May and now June - so it is repeatable, but not desirable.

In each case I go back to 2.0.0.13 and it works with the problems already mentioned.

I've tried running in -safe-mode and so far it is more stable -

Sysinfo/2 reports:
Version: OS/2 4.00 US (IBM OS/2 Base Operating System)
Kernel: 14.103a (from WSeB CP#2/Warp 4 CP#2 PostFix)
FixPack: Warp 4 FixPack #15 US (XR0M015)

Where do I go from here?
Thanks
Dave

You could try the following from Rich Walsh.  Here it works better than any of the 3.6 branch - they consume memory like it's going out of fashion.  It also works on a system like yours that is using the SNAP video drivers.

You will also need the 'Nightly Tester Tools' plug in to get all your plugins to work.

QuoteI've posted a recent build of the next version of Firefox to my
website.  You can download it from:
    http://e-vertise.com/warpzilla/firefox-37a4pre.zip

This version contains several OS/2 enhancements and fixes:

Enhancements:
- scrolling should require 25-50% less CPU usage than previously;
there are other less noticable improvements in display speed

- previously, switching to a new tab before the page loaded
(i.e. getting a blank screen before anything was displayed)
  consumed an extra 1-3mb of memory for the life of that tab;
this memory usage has been eliminated

- there's a new OGG decoder as well as changes in the OS/2 audio
component that make it far less likely that normal system
activity will interrupt the audio stream

Fixes:
- users of Matrox video drivers should see a normal, non-slanted
display;  however, video performance will be considerably
slower/more CPU-intensive than would be the case with SNAP

- users of FlashBlock will no longer see a floating rectangle
that fails to move or update when scrolling

Please let me know if you see any bugs or have other problems.

Most likely you are using the older 16bit TCP/IP stack. Newer version of Firefox
(including the "high memory" builds of the 2.x line) do require the 32bit TCP/IP.

Dave Palmer

Thanks Rudi and Ivan -

The stack is likely my issue - and it appears I'll be held up with it - which would likely prevent the Rich Walsh solution from working too.

Guess I'll have to bite th bullet and upgrade to eCs - but the thought of conversion is chilling.  I still have old DOS and Windows apps which require the the comport for control of a programmable power line controller device - which itself is no longer manufactured or supported -

So even though I have the memory (2gb) and processor speed I am cautious about conversions -

But - with Firefox issues even more is at risk or of concern...

Thanks
Dave

As long as you do not use /APIC your DOS apps should work with eCS2x as the did before. And as you are happy with APM there's no need for you to install ACPI at all. So I don't know wheres your problem with DOS apps and eCS.

Of course I would suggest trying out on another 650MB-1GB partition at first.
