Realtek 8201CL built-in network card on nVidia based mainboard

I've got msi k9n6sgm-V mainboard based on NVIDIA MCP61 chipset, with the built-in network card Realtek 8201CL.

I've found that I should install the Nvidia nic driver, available in ecs 2.0. It installs fine, but I can ping only myself - no pings to any external IPs, even in my local network. Does anyone have this network chip working? Or maybe any clues to get it working?

lewhoo

OK, I magically found the topic on the yahoo ecs mailing list, with new version of the driver, which I will give a try. Sorry for bothering anyone with this email.

Realtek 8201CL is not a 'network chip' (MAC Media Access Controller) but a PHY (Physical Interface). You do not need any driver for a PHY but for the MAC. In your case that one built into the NVIDIA chip. No clue why this hardware vendors even notice the PHY chip since a while. Probably they even do not know that this is of no interest to anyone.

Yes, you are right. However the problem remains the same - a driver is needed :)

Hi lewhoo

Sounds like you only need the nveth driver for the MCP61 chipset. The most recent is here http://www.88watts.net/download/nveth-0.1.2.zip

Thanks, I already know that. I tried the new driver with the same result. However the problem could be different  - when I reverted to the old hardware and set the old driver by mptn I couldn't ping other hosts too. I needed to restore config.sys. Perhaps mptn did something wrong with the config.sys and that was the problem, not the driver.

Unfortunately, I cannot perform further test for suddenly something in the newer hardware stopped working properly :/

Static IP? And can you ping the machine from another machine?
