The Problems - The Solution.

I have had really big problems with the new ecS 2.0 GA. It would fill many pages to describe all problems, but a few one I should mention. I have installed GA at least 15 times.
I have two disks, one 1 Tb and the other 80 Gb. After buying the new PC 2 years ago I had to buy a new HD since I could not install eCS on a HD > 500 Gb. Later I have installed every new release, but kept the old ones. I often had strange hangs either in single programs or the whole machine. I often had to reboot.
After installing 2.0 things got worse. Even old versions got worse.I immediately thought it had to do with the hardware. But I also run Wind Vista on the same hardw. without problems. Strange.

At the end I managed to install GA on the Tb disk, but to no help. I used JFS and I used HPFS with the same result. What happened? P.ex. I copied a folder from Vista to the common volume (Fat32). It took about 1 min. I copied the same folder from the common volume to a JFS volume in ecS - it took 5 min. I used Drag and Drop, xcopy, 4OS2. The same result. I copied in both directions.
If I opened an explorer to see the files in a folder it seemed to work OK, but when I wanted to close the explorer the window became unresponsive and hung. I learned to wait - after 3 - 5 min it suddenly closed. If I opened the Drives folder in the Local System folder it was empty - for many minutes. I had to learn to wait.

The solution.
It is as simple as it is idiotic. When I installed GA I always used a memory pin to copy the registration code into the install program, but I did not remove it during the rest of the installation process. The last time when I waited for the drives folder to populate and some windows to close I removed the pin. In that very moment the drives folder became populated and all windows closed. Now everything seem to work OK. But I can still use the memory pin, I can copy to and from it. But I have not tested what happens if I have it in the slot when I reboot or do other tasks, probably later one day.

Hi eilygre

That sounds like the reasoning behind the advice "do not boot with usb drives attached"  :-)
