HI friends,

i'm try to install os/2 in a new laptop, but this hasn't floppy, i have an usb floppy but in the 2º disk, the installations stops with an error message.

I think the solution is make the three intallation disks with usb drivers, but i haven't idea that how do this.

Everybody could help me??!!!!

Thank you, and sorry but my english, i write from spain and my english is very bad... :P

I installed eCS 1.2r onto my Thinkpad T23 using the cd drive. If it can boot from the cdrom drive, one can install it from that. New laptops have the feature where one can boot from the cd.

Que tal!?

You might want to provide more detailed information about the machine that you are attempting the OS/2 installation into.

Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?  Could you be more specific about the machine model and approximate year of manufacture?  How many USB ports do you have?  Do you know how many USB controllers are in there?
Do you have a CD/DVD device built into your machine?

What you describe about the USB floppy issues are known for older releases of OS/2 and, to be resolved, those require a more thorough knowledge of the hardware into which you are attempting the install procedure.

In short, you need to do some homework on your hardware first.

I don't think you'll be successful with USB floppy. AFAIK, the installation program enables USB after entering the "graphics". Until then (text screens), the installation is unable to operate USB. Therefore, farewell installing from USB floppy ...

Nevertheless, the W4 CD is bootable so that you don't need the floppies as long as you are able install the needed drivers after finishing installation of OS/2. If it is the case then install from the CD somehow, perhaps only "bare bones", and then tune the result from the existing system. You will be able to access your USB and use most of USB devices (flash drives, floppies, etc.)
The key question is: Is your CD USB as well? If it is then prepare for a big adventure  ;D  You won't be able to install at all, you will need a "temporary" machine, where you will install the system and then you will transfer a partition image. Don't lose hope, I have already undergone all this and I have succeeded  ;D

I haven't tried my W4 install in a long time, so I may be wrong, but I thought the WSeB CDs were bootable, and the W4 disk wasnt, and came with 3 floppies instead (and a tool to make them from within OS/2 or Windows).

As Robert says I also remember W4 is not bootable. But..you can install w4 from the harddrive. I've done it once and have some notes on it, but I'm not shure I could make it today. My notes says:

1. Use eg a w98 bootable CD and make a FAT-partition on your harddrive , big enough.

2. Copy the whole OS2IMAGE directory to that FAT-drive. One has to exchange the disk1 with disk one from the diskette version and that one has to be updated with new idedasd pack (please don't ask me about that,I do not remember.)

3. In config.sys on that disk1 you should add a row: SET SOURCEPATH=X:\OS2IMAGE where X is drive of OS2IMAGE.

4. And then what? I guess you type setup or something, standing in the OS2IMAGE-directory. Can't remeber that either.

5. You then have to add networkfunctions separatelyfrom the cd.

Sorry for my bad memory. I tell you what I have and I know it is possible to do, but I guess there will be some tweaking...

Hi friends,

I had tried all yours suggestions, but there is a new problem...

installation disk, ok ;)
first disk, no problem, ok ;)

but in the second disk, send a message "the system coudn't use the disk unit...." and don't remember....

it's happenend with a new dell's laptops.  Models Latitude D600 with cd-rw built-in and Latitude D620...

The only way to install Warp 4 is, unmounted the hd from dell laptop, and next mounted into a old hp omnibook laptop.  On this way, no problems, installation is perfect... ;D

Isn't the best way but is a way....

Best regards....

RobertM

McKein,
If memory serves, that error occurs for one of a view various reasons...
(1) The IDE driver does not recognize the HDD controller (may need DANI's drivers)
(2) There is a partition of an "unknown" type still on the machine (such as certain NTFS partitions) - I use DFSee to remove whatever doesnt belong there
(3) The IDE driver is getting weird/wrong information back about the HDD (such as weird/incorrect geometry due to drive size/BIOS limits - also resovable with Dani's drivers).

There are probably a few other possible scenarios as well... so if none of those seems to be the issue, let us know.
