If anyone would like to try my modified FM/2 3.13, go to the following link.  Some icons, bmps, and toolbars have been changed or modified.

Ah, FM/2. Though I rarely use it, it's an essential tool, nicely done all around. Thanks DG and others. (I checked Help, About, now recall Kimes. -- And, CUTE animation there.)

Really need to familiarize myself with it; just in clicking around, "found" a hex viewer and a bookshelf viewer that will be handy. It's nice to have a file manager with nearly instant response even with hundreds of files in a directory, I've gotten too used to the sloth of Windows and Linux GUIs.

I have been using it for around 13 years.  There is so much to this File Manager that I am still finding things I did not know it could do.  It has a text editor, viewer, ini editor, ea editor, its own seek and scan, built in archiver, and the list keeps going on and on.  It is actively being developed and just keeps getting better with each release.

Just go to its bug track to see how much as changed just in the last couple of years.

File Management has always been one of OS/2's strong points with programs like FM/2 and FileStar.

One new feature people may like is that it can be set to now delete files and directories to the XWP trashcan.  This feature has to be enabled in its settings notebook.  Check out the settings notebook for the customization you want.

The States box is another powerful feature.  Let's say there are several setups you use for say development purposes.    Just set up the file containers the way you want and just right click on the states box and save the state giving it a name.  Next time when you start FM/2 and need this setup again, just select the states box and then select the state you want.  I use this when I am developing my schemes, themes, and graphics.

You can speed up the response by changing drive flags.  For FAT32,  I check the flags telling it not to use the system icons ( big speed boost), long names, slow drive, etc.

This makes a fat32 drive fly.

I downloaded it and it's now parked on the Warpcenter in my System folder.  I used FM/2 a /long/ time ago and it seems that you've fixed something that annoyed me that never worked right for me-all of the "tooltips" work on the buttons.  Thanks for a great job and I like the animation in the help screen also.  For some reason the copyright symbol in my "about" box looks like a high-ASCII character...probably something I messed up.

Here's is something you may not have known.  Right click on a blank space on the toolbar and a list of all the toolbars comes up for selection.  Just about every part of FM/2 does something.  Just start clicking on things and see.   A good place to start is all the info boxes at the top and bottom of the containers.

I actually discovered that by accident.  I'm tweaking all of the archiver settings for what I need.  I wound up having to spend most of my day doing things I didn't want, but I just installed eCS 1.2MR and your version of FM/2 is next on my list.  ;D

P.S. Maybe a little "optimization FAQ" is in order?

The best thing to speed up file and directory viewing is to

right click the drive in the drive tree, select edit, and then drive flags.

Check the following for FAT32 drives:
Don't load icons (has the most impact) When checked, FM/2 will use its own icons instead of the eCS/OS2 system icons.
Don't load subjects
Don't load longnames
Slow drive

For NTFS drives, do the same as for the FAT32 drives.

On any drive including HPFS and JFS, check "Don't load icons" to speed up the drive read.

In the settings notebook under the "DirCnrs" tab, check IMMEDIATE UPDATES.

In the settings notebook under the "Monolithic" tab, I also check
INI viewer outside
Arcboxes outside
Viewer outside
Collector outside

This allows these utilities to be used outside the FM/2 window.

I usually check
No space below Tree
to allow the drive drive to use it full space.  Once checked, you will have to resize the drive tree to use the full space.

Usually checking or unchecking setting depends on the individual.

One last thing.  To install FM/2 utilities, you will need to download the following package from Hobbes and put in the the same location as the FM/2 wpi.  Start FM/2 and you will be given the option of installing the utilities.  I highly recommend this.  Some of the commands in FM/2 rely on these utilities.

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/browser/fm2-3-5-9_fm2utils-1-1.zip.

Delete the older version of FM/2 once unzipped.  Put my version of FM/2 in the same directory as the utility wpi.  Start FM/2 and select the utility package along with FM/2.  If you already have the utility package installed, you do not need to install the utilities again.

I made a few more graphic changes to my build.  This one also contains some internal revisions that will be found in FM2-3-14-0.  My latest build can be found at

I have again revised my version of FM/2 3.13 even more with more changes to the bmps in the toolbars.  This version also includes some code that will be found in 3.14 when it is released.

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/incoming/fm2/fm2-3-13-0-2008-09-29-DG.wpi

This will probably be the last update on my version until the team releases version 3.14.  Then I will update my build with its code and post.

Thanks David, for your wonderful work in making everything beautiful!

You are very kind.

I kept having ideas and the latest upload to Netlabs is the result.

Remember, after installation, to see the latest changes to the toolbars, one has to open the File Manager 2 folder and then double click on the "Backup FM/2 customizations and reset to defaults".  Then start FM/2 and start clicking on the various toolbars to see the bitmap changes.  If you don't like the changes, just double click on the "Reverse last set of FM/2 customizations" to get the previous toolbars.

I have finally come up with the toolbar bitmaps that I can live with.  I have posted a new pic with zip file to the Canadian site listed below.

I replaced the distribution dated the 5th with a new one dated the 8th at the Canadian site.  I reworked the toolbars primarily rearranging and adding a few additional toolbar selections to the toolbar.  Everyone toolbar now has a printer selection, a rescan selection, and a make directory selection along the the quicklist toolbar selections and the FM2 close button.  Some icons have been rearranged on the toolbars hopefully for the better.
