Has anyone tried downloading the 480Mb file swt2_20080624.zip on hobbes incoming to see what it is?
It's too large for me to download just to unzip it.

Thanks for any info

Well, whatever it is, was at 571MB when I tried downloading it... and unzipping it didnt work. So I checked again, realizing that you said it was 480MB. The file is now (as reported by Hobbes) 626MB - and it seems, still growing...

Hmmm...

Maybe someone trying to crash the server with a never ending file? Who knows?

SWT is the windowing kit for Java right? Wasnt someone here working on porting SWT to OS/2 so we can have modern apps like Azereus and Lotus SmartSuite and what not?

Can it be over 714MB (and still growing)?

The MacOSX Toolkit is 4.21MB
The Windows Toolkit is 4.97MB

Even if it was the source, it should compress to something a lot smaller than 714MB since it is a zip file...

Hmmm... unless there is something else really neat attached... but what? The whole latest JDK and... ???

Probably the whole build environment zipped up, or perhaps the drive image zipped up. I believe this was alluded to here before.

The file contains eCS v2.0 Beta4 VirtualPC container with Eclipse for OS/2 Transitional Project.

It should NOT have been uploaded to hobbes, archiver has been notified.
ie, dont bother D/L'ing it as the project has changed since that date, and it might vanish while your in the middle of D/L'ing it.

The file contains a Virtual PC image with all the tools needed to develop the port of SWT for OS/2. I upload it and if I offended anybody my apologies, still, I believe it should not be erased. I find that attitude a little dumb and hypocritical. Anybody can get ecs beta anywhere, you just need to know it exists, and who cares?, only OS/2 users anyway. VAC++ 4.0 mmm , great tool but if you ask at IBM, they will probably ignore that it ever existed (out of AIX people, and maybe they don't know it either), technically is abandonware.

I don't want to make profit of this, and I don't see how anyone could, I just want somebody to take on the development and finish it. Today this port could be used to create little but practical applications, it just needs a person with PM knowledge. I have little to no time to do anything on it anymore. I was able to make it work with OpenWatcom and java 131, but there were issues with the compiler that I couldn't solve.

I hope my reasons and intentions are understood and I hope this environment is not deleted.

Thanks

ivan

It appears to have been deleted as of now (good job I got it early this morning!).

Is it sour grapes that makes you want to stop people with OS/2 from having Eclipse for OS/2?  Note it says for OS/2, NOT for eCS only!  I suppose if it had been an OS/2 container you would have been quite happy for it to stay there.

As Leo says anyone that wants to can get a copy of eCS rc 'whatever' just by looking on the web so I can only assume that you are acting like Eugene who appears to think there is only eCS and nothing but eCS. IMHO a bad strategy as I think there are quite a lot of people like myself that have OS/2 and would be willing to pay for the extras that are being added to OS/2 to enable it to be sold as Ecs (note to Mensys - think about selling the addons separately to those of us that don't need OS/2 because we have it already).

While I did not download the file, it sounds like it did violate copyright and as such I agree that it should not have been uploaded to Hobbes.  The purpose of Hobbes is not meant to be a repository for the illegal distribution of copyrighted material, regardless of whether you believe the company that owns those copyrights ignores / abandons the software.

If IBM wanted to make VAC++ 4.0 for OS/2 (or OS/2 itself) available for anyone to download they could certainly chose to do that, and provide an appropriate license.  But that decision can only be made by people at IBM.

Just my $0.02

To add a little more background, the SWT port project is available on the Netlabs SVN server. http://svn.netlabs.org/swt I created the OpenWatcom branch as I don't have VAC++ 4.

Leonardo has some screen shots here http://os2advocacy.blogspot.com/.

The OpenWatcom branch compiles, but fails to launch any PM windows when running the tests. I've instrumented the software, and the PM calls are being run. I'm thinking there is some kind of link error, but I haven't been able to find it. Leonardo confirmed the same problems on his machine, so that eliminated some weird problem with my setup. Unfortunately, I haven't had a lot of time to spend on this, and it probably needs a fresh perspective.

There have been multiple calls for help on this to no avail.  :'(

Hi lpino,
I certainly appreciate your work with SWT but placing copyright material like VPC on a University server is usually a big no no and could get hobbes yanked off the network. I don't know of a good way to distribute your environment so that other people can help with the port. Comments anyone?

Hi lpino,

I can understand your intension's are good but the container does include software that should not be publically distributed. It is unfortunately a fact of life that until the owners of that software publically release it, that they do still have all rights to that software, and as much as it sucks we have to abide by the software owners wishes.

Ditto with eComStation beta's, it is eComStations call on their software, not mine, and not yours. eComstations financial model, and there agreement with IBM means they need to change for the software, no payment for the software, no more development :-( ok, just minus the development that is paid for, which does still make a big difference to eComStation, and OS/2.

As my scripts grab everything from hobbes incoming to check, I myself do have a copy, and I am duty bound to have notified hobbes as no one wants to put hobbes in a position of having to give up its archive due to abuse and/or legal reasons.

I also only use OS/2 here, though I do have the eCS CD's and full software access as I have paid for these, my primary interest is in updated drivers. The computer I am typing this from has OS/2 v4.52 on it, and though it has been copied from one HD to another as I upgrade computers, it is the same one I installed back in 1993 after Gavin Povey from IBM Australia gave me a copy of v2.11. I'm happy with OS/2 v4.52, with Xworkplace and all the updates. eCS add's a lot of extra's I'm not really interested in but I do still want to support eComStation as it provides OS/2 upgrades and development, as well as caters to those that like the eye candy, which is a lot of people. I have keep a copy of eCS in a virtual container myself but havent run it for ages. The final word from me is, if your happy with something and its not broke, dont fix it ;-)

Without eComStation and APC, I probably would have a problem running eCS on this here quad 3GHz AMD with 4G RAM, 4 x 500G SATA harddisks, ATI GPU, with USB v2, Olympus E3, E520 cameras, external USB backup disks, and obviously also with all the help of Netlabs and people like Paul Smedley.

If you can provide just the software/code you want to pass on, I'm more than happy to upload it to hobbes as well as os2site.com. If I get the time myself I'll take it from the container, repackage, and upload it myself.

Good night all, I've been up way to long for various reasons...

Cheers

This is going to be my last post on this subject. I admit that I did wrong uploading the file to hobbes, not because of the contain, but for the use of the site.
Still, one could argue that I didn't actually upload any program at all but a file that needs another program to be read, maybe a lawyer can make a point here.
Anyway, I am one of the oldest users of OS/2 on this list, I participated on the beta program of Merlin and Aurora and I own a LOT of software I bought and I plan to buy eCS when it becomes a product but the point was different.

Well a real pity.

Hi lpino,

Keep in mind that none of us were probably responsible for it being deleted. So, dont take anything personally. Sadly, since IBM is the 800lb Gorilla, in was simply in Hobbes' best interests to remove it. Otherwise (had they not) IBM could have been nice and sent a takedown request, or they could have had the whole site shut down (the legality of such aside - just as other big companies have done to other smaller ones). Saves them the hassles - or the potential for worse.

Your intent though, I am sure is applauded

Robert
